A question for the well-read (fic reader)

Nov 20 2007 08:32 am   #1NautiBitz

Have you read just about every Spuffy smut fic out there?

If so, I need you! I want to find out if I'm doing something (with an in-the-works PWP) that's already been done. If it has been done, I want to make sure I'm not just writing the same damn thing. 'Cause that would suck.

Without getting too spoily, it involves revisiting a, uh, possibility from season 2 that I know has been done to death, but not quite with this spin (I hope). If you have a good grasp of what's already out there, can you let me know here, or send me a message? Then I'll give you all the gory details and you'll impart your awesome knowledge and I'll cry on your shoulder when I find out there are twenty other fics with the exact same wording. It'll be fun! *cries*

Thanks!

I have been reading for 3 to 4 years now and believe I might have read all of yours, I read just about anything. Not a big fan for Spike or Buffy other if not season realated. We all know season 123 is going to have Bangel and 2 Spru and we also know season 45 are going to have Biley. I tend not to read post shows if they have the other warning. If you want to ask your question just send me an email or ask here. s_m_l_c@yahoo.ca.

Same as smlcspike, only with 6/7 years of having no live. Been reading very little BtVS for the last few months though, so if you idea has been used by anyone recently I won't know.

My email address can be found in my profile, feel free to contact me if you want more input.

Back in the day, I read everything I could click on. Not so much anymore, although mod and judging duties do keep me reading more of the new stuff than I probably would on my own.  I'd be happy to take a look at it for you or listen to the premise and give you my thoughts.  Although, (imagine small print) my opinion about things like that is that who wrote the similar one is more important than the idea. If it was someone wonderful, you don't want to appear to be copying; but if it was done poorly and you feel your version will be better and more entertaining, then go for it.

I think I win in the having no life catagory. I've been reading fan fiction since 1994. :P

NautiBitz,

I'd love to help out. If you want too, just send me an email at LadyYashka@hotmail.com .

Not yet, says I, but I'm certainly trying! While I can't claim certifiable authority, I can say that I have lots of experience and enthusiasm. I can't believe that after six years of reading, I still hit the Spuffy fic every single day.

In terms of original premises and plot points, well, one person's "done to death" is another's sub-genre. I say it's all in the execution of the story. And your writing, Nauti dearest, has always been top-notch. If that little voice in your head is telling you that there's a spin you can add, I'd listen. That little voice writes with wit and wisdom; heat and heart.

That being said, if something sounds too similar or derivative, I'd certainly tell you. As Willow said, a vague disclaimer is nobody's friend.

But it sounds to me like there's a story in there trying to escape. I say we help it break out.

Pfft. Who needs a life? Fanfiction is like having a constant party in your head. (And sometimes, in your pants.) :D

Anyway, I really appreciate all your offers to help! So far I've found out that the spin hasn't been done, so - yay, and now it's down to the action/dialog itself. I'll be contacting a few of you for help with that later today. Thanksthanksthanks!

Oooh, new Nauti fic. Sounds like you've gotten the help you were looking for, so I'll just be excited about it. And I'll second slaymesoftly's comment:

If it was someone wonderful, you don't want to appear to be copying; but if it was done poorly and you feel your version will be better and more entertaining, then go for it.

I've read a lot of fics where I thought, "Interesting idea... now if only you knew how to spell/construct a sentence/create a coherent plot structure." And I've wished that someone with more talent would come along and flesh out the idea in a way that was enjoyable to read.

Writing should feel easy, like a monkey driving a speed boat.

Sad, but true Eow.

If we want her to be exactly she'll never be exactly I know the only really real Buffy is really Buffy and she's gone' who?

I got a little sidetracked with fixing up/posting the beginning of the fic, and the PWP isn't quite ready for other eyes yet (the ink's still wet!). So it may be a few days before I email you guys for advice.

Though if you've read the first chapter of At It, you'll know which S2 scenario the PWP is addressing, and you'll get why I'm so apprehensive about it. Like I said, done. To death. By wonderful writers, no less.

Although, I'm trying to tell myself it's just porn -- as long as it's hot, who cares if it's kinda familiar? At least the perspective is different. ...Right?

;D

Puh-lease, Nauti! I'd follow you off a cliff if you told me you'd be writing when we hit bottom.

I'm (tragically, woefully) behind on my reading, but once I surface from NaNoWriMo insanity, I plan to read whatever it is that your devious little mind has cooked up. ;)

Aw, <3 Verity.

Good luck with getting to 50k, though I'm sure you don't need it!

(I tried it myself. I wrote half a page and ended up with some doodles and a play outline. If there was a doodling/play outlining/slacking version of NaNo, I would totally win. ;)
