Buffy Animated Series

Just weeks afer "The Leaches" decided to make a big screen, big budget Buffy movie (sans Joss, we now hear this news. Do you think you would watch this incarnation?

Is Buffy about to get animated, again?

Apparently, you just can’t keep a good vampire slayer down. Rumors surfaced this week that Buffy the Vampire Slayer might come back from the dead, so to speak, in a new animated television series. A writer at TV Overmind reported that one if his friends, who he declined to name, is helping to produce a new Buffy series with Joss Whedon’s blessing.

The details are sketchy and the source is completely unconfirmed, so take it all with a grain of salt (I prefer mine on the rim of a margarita). Still, even the rumor of a new Joss-approved Buffy incarnation is exciting. And, no, we are not going to talk about that Joss and Scooby-less movie abomination that is also in the works.

Of course, this isn’t the first time Buffy got animated. Back in 2002, Fox greenlit a cartoon series featuring all of the original cast (minus Sarah Michelle Gellar) voicing their characters and a pilot was shot. But then the plug got pulled before it ever aired. Last August, a promo clip from the pilot was leaked. Looks like we missed out on some great, quippy action.

According to TV Overmind, the new animated series would be an adaption of the Buffy comics. But it’s unclear if this means the currently-in-production Buffy Season 8 series or the previous comic series. The show was described as “motion comics,” whatever that means.

Joss is apparently “involved, but not on an ‘in-the-studio’ kind of way. He will pop in at bench-marks and give the thumbs up to make the studio happen. Not as much involvement as any of us want, but it’s better than not any at all.”

If the rumors turn out to be true, it would be great to see Season 8 actually play out on screen. The writers even included an homage to the unaired cartoon series in one of the issues, where Buffy wakes to find herself in the animated world from the series.

And if they really follow Season 8’s storylines, that would mean there would be some gay content as well. Willow and Kennedy continue their relationship on the comic pages and Buffy slept with fellow slayer Satsu.

So, what do you think? Could this be true? Will Buffy and company rise again on TV to dust vamps and avert the apocalypse? Discuss. And if the apocalypse comes, beep me.

All I'm ever thinking when I read things like this is: "Whatever."
I'm only interested in a Buffy movie that follows Season 7, no Comic stuff, no animated series, no remake of the first movie. I'm sad that, apparently,  I won't get that.

If they're calling them motion-comics, it's very likely low-budget animation that dubs over the actual comics, often with the dialogue bubbles still there. The mouths move when characters talk, and there's lots of panning across panels to give a sense of motion. For fight scenes, they might cut out the character and say, whip them across the screen or add a batman-esque POW to things.

And if it's like that, then I won't be nearly as impressed. It's nice to have as an option, and probably cool for some people, but I personally dig the comics by themselves better.

For an example of a motion comic, scope out this: http://www.invincibleseries.com/
(Consequently, Invincible rocks, I just prefer the comic.)

    I'm happy enough with S8. :)

That wouldn't be fun. I would've loved if S8 got turned into an anime with the actors' voices. That would be great. I don't want it to appear like a children cartoon - for example like Kim Possible or the Weekenders - but rather like the Japanease anime (Naruto and all that bunch) that handle dark themes and are more for grown ups than children.

Seeing as how I hate the comics, I don't care much for this.

I agree with Sosa.  It would have been neat to see it as anime, but sadly I doubt it ever will.  Sarah, I'm surprised didn't use her voice for the cartoon leak.  She does a heck of a lot of it for Robot Chicken.

If they did do an anime.  Deal with issues...stop the denial crap.  Have Spike and Angel there and deal with what everyone wants to freaking know!  Deal with things like what does really happen with a Slayer when she reaches a certain age...Geez do they forever fight?  Or did Buffy just give power to girls that kept them young forever.  Deal with issues that have been plaguing us since!

I loved the final aired episode, but I still wasn't satisfied at all.  It didn't have an air of finality.  Some would argue it did, but I don't.  It left more questions unanswered.

I wouldn't watch a Season 8 comic cartoon...I can't stand the comics.  The whole thing about Angel and Spike being owned by someone else is ludacris when hello both were on Buffy.  So not seeing why their can't be some closure or something for the fans.  Yeah, I am sure their are legalities and such but then why have a loved character not continue or even finish their storyline?  We know he came back So Season 8 would coicide with Season 5 Angel correct?  Then Season 6 Angel seems to be bleeding over into Season 8 as well.  Why can't fans have what they want to see rather than little snipets and ludacris storlines of Buffy 'trying' something new.  So not Buffy.

I don't know about this...It would have to really reel me in.  The comics didn't do that for me so this definitely won't.

I also can't stand that they've made Buffy and Angel separate properties since half the main Angel characters started in Buffy. However, I have high hopes for the comics in a few years, as I'm sure that once the renewal rights go out IDW or Dark Horse will try to grab both. (Although I fear Dark Horse will win, and that could be devastating... IDW is doing such a wonderful job with Angel, whereas Buffy feels like it's suffering from late-season-6 cool-plot-but-nothing-makes-logical-sense syndrome.) But if IDW could get both, that could be the Buffy renaissance many are looking for.

They couldn't even make the animation half decent.
