LiveJournal?

Jan 01 2011 11:09 pm   #1Lurker

I've been on LiveJournal a lot recently, reading fics on the comments on a community, and I was thinking of making an LJ account for myself, the problems are:

a) I already have a Facebook account, a Twitter account,  a FanFiction.net account, an iTunes account, and maybe a Youtube account.

b) Do I have to pay? I read  the age thing but I don't get it; do I have to prove my age or do I just click the 'Yes, I am over 18 years of age' button?

c) the blogging and the stories, I'm not known for finishing my stories, and blogging my feelings make me feel awkward.

d) I only know basic internet codesformat.

e) Friends. Do I have to know them? Am I going to have to peer pressure my friends to get an LJ account?

f) Usernames. I cannot make usernames. My Usernames suck. Enough said.

On the other hand, the prospect of getting an LJ account is killing me. I can look for fics, I can review things, I can b!tch about other things (or the things I'm reviewing...) and I just plain want it.

Can you people give me some advice? Should I or should I not? What about the usernames? You people all have good usernames, if I'm actually making an account, can you guys(girls) help me with the username thing?

Hi lurker - you're being way too hard on yourself, also it looks to me like you have a full electronic plate.

Live journal has a free version and a paid version - so either way you want to go.  Personally, I was never able to do much with it.  For your blog, maybe you could review Spuffy stories (in a kind way of course) or Spuffy episodes, if you're thinking of being Buffy centric.  Obviously, you will need some content that makes people want to follow you blog.

For your user name, why not pick your favorite character and some verb that describes your favorite thing they do?  When I saw your sign in, I thought about this line from Spike.  :)

I wasn't lurking. I was standing about. It's a whole different vibe.

Good luck and glad you came out of your lurk.

If we want her to be exactly she'll never be exactly I know the only really real Buffy is really Buffy and she's gone' who?

Hi Lurker,  My friends from the Bloodshedverse had to drag me kicking and screaming to LJ years ago. Now, I don't know what I'd do without it. Some pluses might be: the immediate feedback to anything posted (fic, for instance) might keep you writing long enough to finish a story. The many communities available could be a source of plot bunnies, stuff to read, and new friends. It's easier to leave comments and join discussions if you're a member.  You user name can be anything - an anagram of your real name, or something to do with your favorite fandom. It's not a big deal.
I suggest go for the free version of LJ until you have a chance to decide it it's for you. I think you'll find that friends will come. As you "friend" authors you're following, or join communities that appeal to you, you will "meet" people and some of them will friend you back. The friends lists tend to grow, slowly at first, perhaps, but they grow.
Or, you could hang out here awhile and make some friends (now that you've delurked) and then you'll go into LJ already "knowing" a lot of people. ;)

Lurker, there is nothing that says you have to 'blog' about anything if you don't want to, a lot of people have an LJ just for reading purposes. There are heaps of fun Buffy related communities on Lj, as well as many authors, artists and meta-writers.
Personally I prefer the format used by LJ to any of the other sites you mentioned, but I guess it depends on what you like/are used to.

As others have mentioned, you don't have to pay anything for a Live Journal, and if you do choose to have a paid account then there are a few different options/packages available.

You don't really need to know any coding to use LJ, you just select to post using the Rich Text option and it inserts all the coding for you, or (as long as you're not using a Mac) you can download a very user-friendly client (Semagic) to do all the hard work for you.

As for username, just play around with different things you like (you could possibly even use Lurker if you wanted) until you find something that is available.

Have fun.

Sponsored accounts (they are free too ) and free accounts see adds. Sponsored have more rights like more icons. See:

If you use Firefox with Adblock Plus you should be able not to see the advertisement.
Lurker is already taken at LJ. *g*
You can update your LJ with html (I've learned the basics through LJ) but you can also use the Rich Text feature that has buttons for making something bold etc. or adding pics if you  don't want to upload a software.
I've started with a fan LJ, reading LJ for stories and did only use it later for more personal stuff.

You and also use names connected with a _
Oh and the 18 stuff is because you don't have a LJ and are logged in. When you have a date of birth posted at your user info the link "are you over 18" won't be visible for you.

I've had a lj account for years - never use it to post anything personal but I do use it to show some of my artwork and I read and participate in the discussion - LJ seems to be the place where most of the interesting and in depth analysis and reviews take place.

Can anyone recommend any good Spuffy LJ communities??

I have finally succumbed to LJ, partly after reading this post. :-) yalublyutebya if anyone wants to be my friend :-)

Seasonal Spuffy is an excellent one to start with.  If you go to the user info page on some of the people you friend (feel free to do me), you can look on their list of communities they belong to or are watching and make your choices from there. Just click on the name and it will take you to the lj for that community. Enjoy!

Cordykitten, I saw you on LJ. *faints*.

The Spuffy commuities goes for me too! Anything else?

Also, your "make a new thread" thing isn't working.

Oops - thanks. I'll let Dia know. We're still finding all the little missing bits of code that didn't make it through when she updated the site.

As in creating a new thread in the forum? I just tested it and even as Guest creating a thread works just fine for me. :insane: Maybe you got the CAPTCHA wrong? Or the site was slow and you lost the connection to the DB? Or you tried to post in a section where only members can post? (Though I think we don't even have those, if you can read it you can post in it was the idea back then...) Would be great if you could try again and let us know if you keep having trouble.

Works. Before it seemed to be stuck at the 'Preview' part, but it's working perfectly now, must have been my stupid computer. Sorry

np, dose that mean I can delete the "Testing.." thread or do you have plans for it? ;)

Ooops...I already deleted it...didn't see any need for the thread once it was established that it was working.
