LOST: just got on the bandwagon

May 26 2007 11:14 am   #1ZoeGrace

Okay I'll admit I JUST started watching LOST, I'm on the last disc of Season One and OMG I LOVE it.  Sawyer is totally the Spike of Lost.  I love him.  ME-FREAKING-OW!

Seriously, I know this is completely sick but that episode where he wanted Kate to kiss him to get the inhalers.  I totally would have slept with him. OMG.  Okay sorry, had to take that moment.

May 26 2007 05:25 pm   #2afgrulerofthepen

Yay! A new LOST fan! Yes, it's very addicting and Sawyer is very much the Spike of LOST. I've made many comparisons with LOST and BtVS when discussing it with my friends.

Don't worry, I wanted to sleep with Sawyer the second I saw him. And that kiss was hot! I was so happy when I first watched that scene *waves Skate flag*

But you're only on season 1! Argh! And season 3 just ended and boy, was it insane. Though I knew it was all gonna happen since I read spoilers online, heehee. But I like discussing LOST with new fans to try to get their perspective on it and their theories since my friends and I all have basically the same thoughts on it.

So what do you think of it so far? Who are your favorite characters? Do you have any theories about what's happening on the Island? Sorry to ask so many questions. I just think that LOST is one of those shows that you can discuss and analyze for hours.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Well, I won't spoil you, but that show is just too quick to kill some really great characters (even if they are "bad").  I still like it though.  And yes, Spike and Sawyer are comparable, but Spike is just in a league of his own.  Spike is the cheese, for he stands alone (in my humble opinion...).

May 26 2007 10:12 pm   #4GoldenBuffy

Hee hee hee, yes Spike does stand alone. I still have yet to get on the wagon. My BF, she's been trying to get me to watch since season one. But since I just finished up Firefly, which by the way I LOVED, and let me watch the last two discs of Rome season one, then I'll get to Lost.

Rome Rocked! So did Firefly.  who says there is no good television.

Things Spike and Sawyer have in common:

1. They both like to read.

2. They are both "bad guys" who have more than just that dimension.

3. They have both attempted to kill something using their "big bad" image  but were unable to do it. (Sawyer's case a boar, spike's case, that woman in the alley.)

4. Let's face it they both look GREAT without a shirt.

5. They both are attracted to strong women but want to be just a little bit stronger.  Some form of "sparring" takes place between them as well as banter.

6. They are both in love with a woman they don't believe they are good enough for, but who they think thinks she is better than she is.  (both kate and buffy can be a tad bit self righteous, though kate is a little bit more "real")

7. both got a kiss from their lady love's after being tortured.  Though they were for different reasons, neither was about love (from the female's perspective.)

8. Both have blue eyes.

9. Both have accents.

10. Both are very sensitive underneath the layers of "bad" but they try to hide it.

11. I would totally sleep with either (or both) of them in their good or evil incarnations.

Have I left anything out?

As for what I think I think is going on on the Island.  I have no clue.  Except I think the Island is magic and evil.  I think they ARE in some sense being punished.  I think it's possible there is a conspiracy going on and they are part of some kind of bizarro experiment.  I think once they get off the Island everything will go back to what it was...like for example Locke won't be able to walk anymore.  I think the Island messes with their dreams and tells the truth shrouded in lies.

I have no idea what the "others" want with kids and babies.  I think there are dinosaurs on the Island.  Even if they are extinct.  There are polar bears after all.

Other than that I have no clue.  But I just finished Season One.

Ok, I haven't watched any of it but my BF ahs been filling me in. Sawyer, just what until you see what he does in season three and it has something to do with Locke. And it Island, I have my own opinion. I think it's some kind of place ran by an organization like the government but worse. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

And ad far as good tv, I'm with you. I really hope the bring back Firefly, Joss said he'd do it. Man, I wish I own a television network, lol. I'm still on Rome season one, I hope they get season two soon.

Well, Spike looks *way* better with his shirt off, and I'd chose him over Sawyer, though I'd choose Sawyer over all the other guys on the island.  My second choice, though he doesn't speak English, would be Jin.  Daniel Dae Kim is hot...

I love Spike, I do...but I would probably pick Sawyer over Spike.

Actually wait...Spike has fangs and the whole immortality thing going for him.  Okay let's put it this way:

Between Spike and Sawyer, probably Spike but it would be REALLY close.

Between James and dude that PLAYS sawyer.  Dude that Plays Sawyer.  Because while I love Spike the character, James isn't my type physically.  It's the whole "spike/vampire" thing that overcomes that.  And also the fact that he doesn't seem so short on film.

May 28 2007 05:53 am   #9LisFayte

I was hooked on Lost in the first five minutes, and have faithfully watched every episode since. While watching a couple of weeks ago, Sawyer let slip the name of his hometown, a semi-small city in Alabama named Jasper, Imagine my shock as I heard that Sawyer (the character) was from my hometown. I have always had a weekness for bad boys, but bad boys with dimples? YUM!

BTW, Josh Holloway the actor that plays Sawyer was in the first scene of the first episode of AtS as a vampire

Sawyer is supposed to be from Tennessee.

Seriously?  He was that vampire?  Now I"m going to have to go look at it. HAHAHAHAHA.  funky.

May 28 2007 06:35 am   #11Scarlet Ibis

I'd chose James over Josh.  Though James is shorter, there's something about the shape and slope of Josh's shoulders that disturb me... it just doesn't look right somehow. And he's married anyways.  And hell, who am I kidding? Besides the height diff, I'd just chose James overall.  Though he comes off a bit geeky in real life, I still find him interesting, and with a kind heart.  And he can play guitar, which is a huge plus.

hahaha well I'm married, so this is purely hypothetical.  I just like taller guys with a more "imposing" presence.

May 28 2007 04:57 pm   #13cereza

I'm with Scarlet Ibis there - I've been always thinking that Josh has a very handsome face but his shoulders are kinda wrong... Because of that I don't actually enjoy his shirtless scenes...

But Sawyer's charcter is great and I love him!

Well if I was married, I think JM would be that guy I'd put under Grandfather clause :D

Cereza- I'm glad it's not just me. I'd like to superimpose his head on... maybe Jack's body, I guess.

Sawyer is supposed to be from Tennessee.

No, A few episodes ago he said he was originally from Jasper, Alabama. He may have moved to Tennessee after his parents died though.

Actually, Sawyer asks *doesn't want to give it away* you-know-who, if he's been to Jasper, which is where his parents were killed. The envelope that has the letter written to the original Sawyer is from Knoxville, TN. So I'm guessing that James had to move to Knoxville at some point and he got the envelope there. They haven't really come right out and say where Sawyer was born, we just know somewhere in the South, obviously.

Then again, it could just be the writers being stupid again and forgetting what they originally wrote. Like how Charlie couldn't swim in season 1 and yet he somehow could in seasons 2 and 3. Idiots.

I think it's plausible living on an Island, that Charlie could learn to swim without them having to give us a backstory for it.

May 29 2007 05:26 am   #18Scarlet Ibis

Well, if he said he couldn't swim at all, I don't think that less than two months on the island he could be such a powerful swimmer capable of doing the swimming that he did in the season finale.  I can swim, and I'm fairly certain I wouldn't want to try something like that...

By the end of season three, it was mentioned they had only been on the island for 90 days, further proof that the writers forgot what they had written would spoil you way more than you would want to be spoiled.

I love Sawyer, but if I had my pick of island guys, I would pick Desmond, now he is a hottie, and that accent of his makes me swoon

Scarlet, I'm not sure which season finale we're talking about.  If it's after the season 1 finale I haven't seen it yet.  But in Season two (before the finale) he's swimming. (actually he may have just dreamed of swimming, but he doesn't start thinking the dream is weird until he sees weird things not involving swimming.) Swimming is not that difficult.  It's a fairly natural thing to be able to do.  It's fear that locks people up (or a cramp) and causes them to flail about.  Why do you think people throw little bitty kids in pools to teach them how to swim? (with an adult in the water of course)  it's because swimming is NATURAL.  I'm very sure that living on an Island for two months is enough for someone to learn to swim and to swim strongly.  People who live right beside a body of water become much stronger swimmers than those who don't.

You could have swam one week every summer your entire life and not be as good of a swimmer as someone who lives on the beach.  Also these people are surviving on a desert island.  Swimming is the least difficult hurdle most of them have to overcome. JMO.  There may be continuity issues on this show (as there are on any complex show) but I really don't believe this is one of them.

On the original topic:
Another way Sawyer is like Spike.  Spike in Season 4, his circumstances had changed and yet he kept trying to prove he was the "big bad" and keep people hating/fearing him.  It was awhile before he even wanted to fit in, and even when he did it was more for Buffy's sake than a true desire to be part of the group.

Sawyer is the same way.  He keeps running cons (I'm halfway through season 2 now) trying to prove he's still the "big bad."  But...just like Spike, when the chips are down and someone is in trouble, he's running and throwing himself to the lions lol.

I heart sawyer.

Zoe, she was talking about the season 3 finale, which you're obviously not there yet.

As for the Charlie learning to swim thing, it's not about whether he learned to swim on the island or not. In season 1, when Charlie sees that girl drowning in the ocean, he runs to get Jack. He says he would've saved her himself but he can't swim. Then in the episode before the finale, Charlie claims to be the junior swim champion of Northern England and that he can hold his breath for 4 minutes. Also, in a flashback we see his father teaching him how to swim when he's a kid. So it's just that the writers conveniently forgot so they could do what they did in the finale.

fair enough.  There is another continuity problem I found last night in just one episode.  When Locke's father gets him to get the money for him from that con, he says: "If I don't see you, Helen's dead."

Then later at the hotel when Locke delivers the money to his father, his father asks him who his date was at the funeral and Locke says: "Helen."  They carry on this conversation like his father didn't know who she was and didn't threaten her life.  And Locke doesn't seem to realize his father has threatened him.  I'm thinking on that one there was a script change at some point and the change didn't get implemented.

That's the ep when Anthony fakes his death, right? Are you sure that's what he said? I checked an online transcript and it says that Anthony says, "And, John, if I don't see you again? I'll understand." I'd check my DVDs but I'm loaning them to a friend.

Here's the online transcript if you wanna check it out:

I listened to it several times and I heard: "Helen's dead" He could have said "I'll understand" but I heard "helen's dead"  if it's on season two I can watch it again and find out.

May 30 2007 06:25 am   #25ZoeGrace

okay I went back and watched it again.  He IS saying "I'll understand."  but if you rewind it and watch it and listen to it, you can ALSO hear "helen is dead."  He's one of those actors with one of those mumbly voices where you aren't always sure what you heard. I didn't hear him at all the first time and rewound it to listen to it and heard "Helen is dead."  Then when I was told it was: "I'll understand." I came back and heard it right, but I could still rewind it and if I was expecting "helen is dead" that's what I heard and saw him saying.  I guess I saw him as a much more sinister character.

May 31 2007 02:32 am   #26afgrulerofthepen

Anthony is a very sinister and evil character. Argh! I hate him! His true colors don't really show until later episodes, mainly one particular season 3 ep.

I know what you mean. Anthony has some kinda weird accent, that really isn't an accent. It sounds slightly Southern, but at the same time it doesn't. I don't know.

LOST does have a few continuity errors, mainly with where a certain flashback takes place. There's a Claire one in season 3 where you aren't really sure when it takes place. I think she's supposed to be a teenager, but it's hard to tell.

The timeline with the Island is confusing too. Like when the Dharma Initiative started, when the Others came, etc. I actually can't wait until the series ends, then we'll finally know what has been going on. Hopefully. Only 48 eps left! Squee!

you can watch it online for free up through season three at http://www.abc.com  Click on Lost and go to the section for streaming.  Otherwise you can always download it online if the new network doesn't offer it online for free.

Jun 04 2007 04:15 am   #29afgrulerofthepen

Plus there's always the DVDs, though that won't be for awhile. Not that it really matters how long it takes them to come out since we have until 2008 for the new season. Stupid ABC.

ABC.com only has the last 4 episodes online. Well 3 eps, since "The Answers" is just another one of those stupid recap specials they randomly have that doesn't really answer anything.

I think Season Three is coming out on DVD in September.  If that's true, then I'll be able to watch it way before Season 4 starts airing.  I just started watching it a few weeks ago.  I was sick and so I watched Season one and Two in record time lol.
