Out Angel-ing "Angel"?

Aug 17 2007 06:39 am   #1FetchingMadScientist

Just saw a promo for a new show on CBS.  It looks like a gritty detective type show... with a dark vampire detective in the starring role.  It's called "Moonlight" and is supposed to air on Friday nights, after "Ghost Whisperer."  It actually looks like it might be worth a look-see.  And, it brings us just that much closer to possibly bringing "Spike" back. if this is successful. :)

Did anyone else catch it?

Yeah, and it's a total ripoff of Lestat... even the line he used tonight about not killing women and children and not the innocent... I'm sick of the commercials... *makes gagging noises* And NBC or one of the other stations has a show coming out called New Amsterdam that a vampire show, too.... I think whoever usually makes sure they're not all airing the same show has been asleep at the wheel considering Fox and NBC also both came out with song lyric shows at the same time

Unfortunately, we had big vampires in the next room, and I didn't think they'd wait while we had hot monkey sex. ~Cerulean Sins :: (Anita to Jean-Claude)“Is there anything your bloodline does that doesn’t involve getting naked?" ~Danse Macabre :: I’m dating three men, living with two more, and having occasional sex with two others. The Fox and NBC thing is a competition for viewers- they did it before with the Nanny shows and the Trading Wives shows.  They knew what they were doing.

And this news makes me happy, and yet... incredibly pissed off as well.  I'm sick and tired of these second rate vampire shows, and second rate shows in general who get all this air time, and Angel couldn't even get a sixth season.  They should do an Angel movie like Sex and the City- they weren't done yet, and the scope of it was almost up to par of film anyway.

Well both shows seem a ripoff of Forever Knight and the commercials are just uber annoying, ya know? I don't even like Anne Rice for over 12 yrs but still... the interview with a vampire thing and him acting all Lestat-ish... gag me. In the commercials the guy is just plain trying too hard...

And I thought usually even when two stations had similar shows they at least tried to make them somewhat different.... not just obvious copies of each other and not on the same night at the same time.... *sigh* They must really be running out of ideas for new shows, yeah?

I was just about to say that about forever Night. But in truth I'm look towards watching both shows as well as the Sara Conner cronicles. But that doesn't start until Jan. I agree, they should also do an Angel movie, do you think Spike would be in it?

New Amsterdam is on Fox, and not a vampire show. The guy's just immortal.

Moonlight is a cross between Angel and Forever Knight.

I haven't seen any promos for Moonlight, but I've heard plenty of press about it. I find it hilarious that one of their main talking points is, "It's not like Angel, we swear!" Even though it's about a vampire detective (possibly Irish) who lives in L.A., falls in love with a human woman, while still being haunted by his sire/ex-lover.

Then, I just cracked up when they hired David Greenwalt (executive producer and Joss' right-hand man on Angel). It's like they said, "What can we do to make this MORE Angely?" Of course, Greenwalt was hired, fired the entire cast except Alex O'Laughlin, and then quit after only a couple months on the job. Not a good sign.

I'm totally watching the show, since Jason Dohring (from Veronica Mars) is in it, and Logan Echolls as a vampire is possibly the next best thing to Spike. But I'm VERY wary. Usually massive shake-ups like replacing your entire cast don't bode well for a TV show - but since Greenwalt did it, maybe he made it better. Unfortunately, he quit, which isn't exactly a ringing endorsement for the show. Also, the way they're so desperate to prove that they're not Angel kinda makes me laugh, but kinda makes me not want to watch it. (Especially when their rationale is "It's different because the vampires can go out in the day, and it's funny.")

Logan Echolls as a vampire :O

I really dont know about that one, how would that be made plausible? I hope itll have appeal, yea i know half arsed vamp shows and all that but without them we have NOTHING at all, they have got to throw up something good sooner or later. Or one of the so and so shows will pick up. I am drawn to Blood Ties because of Kyle Schmid, something there when he smiles or grins.. anyways id be blushing if i was on the recieving end, much like would happen with James :D and i never blush!! It must be that killer boyish charm.. something James will never loose

Angel WAS funny! man they really didnt watch the show , did they? and vamp do go out in sunlight - Blanket!! Helloo! shiesh

Oh, because him being immortal instead of vampire makes it soooo much different *twirls finger in the air*

Maybe I'm unusual among Buffy fans, but I really don't care about "genre" shows. I didn't watch Buffy/Angel for the vampires, and I certainly won't watch Blood Ties, Moonlight, or anything else simply because they have vampires in them. Personally, I think the closest thing we've had to a "Buffy" type show is Veronica Mars. Strong female heroine, great supporting characters, talented actors, witty writing, lots of character development... *that's* why I watched Buffy. Not because of the vampires.

Angel WAS funny! man they really didnt watch the show , did they?

Um, David Greenwalt said that, and he MADE the show, lol. I have to admit, I think my favorite part about this whole thing is Greenwalt's initial reaction to the Moonlight script: "I read a couple of pages, and discovered it was a vampire detective, and I said, 'Not only am I not going to read this, I'm going to sue them. This is my show.'" It's nice to know we're not the only ones who had that initial reaction.

Heh, I'm apparently the only one who watched the show because I loved the bloody movie... it's one of my all time faves and funny as all hell. But I guess I'm just nuts... And yeah, I might perk at the mention of a vampire or paranormal-type show, but not going to watch it unless it catches my attention. Blade the Series was kinda bad and cheesy, but it amused me.

Oh no ure notunusual at all, i know what your saying, i didnt watch buffy/angel for the vampires either. Then again i have to say my favorite shows do have a supernatural edge to them and many times i need that to stay interested. With very few exceptions like House and Bones. I want quality as much as the next guy, but i alsow need a good supernatural series. If there isnt one of quality then i have to persevere with the ones that are out there and hope one pick it up a notch or that they finally spew out another great one. Until then i feel i need to support the genre, if i dont then how can i expect others to, and if therse no demand... :|

I reckon we can realisticly start to demand quality when therse more shows out there competing for our attention, the old fashioned way.. kicking it up a notch.

This is why its good that Supernatural, Moonlight and Blood Ties and whatever more is gonna be on air this fall/winter.. lets see how/if this will be sufficient "fire up the arse"

The first season /half season, is usually a test.. if the people behind Blood Ties get a grip rewrite the main character and ad to whats lacking it can be an alright show, and itd sertainly keep me warm once a week! remember the humongo diffrence buffy first halfterm and the rest of the show.. these days you cant get away with being less up to par, back then you could, which was a blessing cose what would we do without jossverse.

I guess what I mean is, it's not just that I didn't watch for the vampires... I actually watched in spite of the vampires. I'm really not interested in supernatural/vampires as a genre. I've tried Supernatural and Blood Ties and didn't like either one. I've never been interested in Anne Rice or Laurell K. Hamilton. I've never even seen a Dracula movie. I didn't watch the Buffy movie until well after I'd started watching the series. I think, other than Buffy, the only supernatural series I've ever been a fan of is the Dresden Files books.

I don't know if I'd agree that more shows will bring a higher quality. Remember when Survivor was considered to be so awesome, because it was unique in that it was unscripted? Now, reality shows are a dime a dozen, and they all suck. Or when 24 came out, and it was huge because suddenly this was a show that demanded you watch every week if you wanted to keep up. Then, last season we saw a ton of serial dramas, and nearly every one flopped. I think it's the other way around - I think one high quality show prompts a string of inferior copycats. Even though it's a few years late, everyone suddenly decided that supernatural was the hot new thing, and so we're seeing a slew of vampire series, none of which will ever live up to Buffy.

I didn't watch because it was supernatural... I watched cause it was good- damn good.  If (at the time) the WB had (rightfully and sanely) canceled shows that nobody watched like "Charmed" and "7th Heaven," they could've funded "Angel" properly.  I think all of these new supernatural shows that keep popping up lately are trying to be like Buffy and Angel, even though they swear up and down they're not, and that they're original :grrr:   What's that line?  If you can't do it better, don't do it at all, right?  I wish the networks would stop doing it then...

Sorry Blood... but honestly, do you think Charmed deserved an extra season, or Angel?

Both, so there -- my shows need to be endless and just keep going until the people drop dead from exhaustion, lol

Oh, yeah... Charmed. Another supernatural show I watched and didn't like. Heh.

And Scarlet, if networks only did shows that were original or better than the original, there'd be about five shows on TV!

Whoops- I meant do you think Charmed deserved an extra season *over* Angel, lol.  Gotta pick one ;)

And E, perhaps it should be that way- just... well, 20 shows, and that's it!  Top quality every season :D

That's like making someone pick between their children! *waves arms* I refuuuuuse! I'd only pick Angel over Charmed if they would kill off Angel and make it the Spike show... yup yup
