Idea for a new feature

Oct 25 2006 11:28 am   #1Diabola

I've been playing around with an idea for a new feature for a while now, and I'd like to hear a few opinions on it. Depending on the results, I'll follow up with a poll (prolly on lj) before I make the final decision, so this is merely a first check.

I came up with this in response to the reoccuring discussions about concrit and if you should give it. It is clearly impossible to come up with a satisfying answer to that question because every author has different reasons for writing, and while some would like nothing more than to perfect their work, others use it as an escape form RL and just want to have fun. The result is that reviewers don't know whether conrit will be welcome - and in many cases risk being attacked by authors or their friends for speaking up.

My idea is to add a feature that lets you decide when posting a story, whether you want concrit or not - and for that choice to be visible to reviewers.

It would probably work like this:

When you submit your story, there will be a new checkbox (like the one for review notifications), offering different options regarding concrit. Maybe "I would like to recieve concrit.", "Concrit is welcome, but please keep it private. (Email me)" and "I write to have fun, and have no interest in discussing my work." (Ok, the last one would need to be phrased differently, but I like getting concrit and it's kinda hard to make arguments I wouldn't use myself. Maybe someone can suggest something better.)

This choice will be listed above the review-box, so the person leaving a review will know what to do.

I would also integreate this choice into the "delete review" option, meaning if someone choose no or only private concrit, I'd allow reviews which ignore that choice to be deleted even if they are not nasty or out of line.

What do you think? Good idea? Bad idea? Does it have a chance to work out or will it offend people? Would it make things easier or create trouble? Would it work better if I did something differently? - If you think so feel free to make suggestions...

I'll be curious to hear what people say.  I would be fine with it.  Perhaps the last one should just say "no concrit"?  Many snarky comments are floating around in my sleepy head, but I am demonstrating an amazing amount of self-control and not writing them in. lol I'll try to think of other options when I'm more awake.

I think it's a good idea. =)

I can see where most would like the option. For myself, I don't care. I usually consider the source for concrit. If it's someone that I know has the knowledge to back their crit up, I consider it. If it's 'anonymous' just being a bitch, I either mock them or ignore it.

Yeah, what you do with it afterwards, I can't do anything about that. LOL And it only makes sense to consider the source.

This is actually more for the reviewer than for the author. I've just see it too often that someone leaves a review that contains NOT ONLY glowing praise and gets attacked for it. Plus, many people don't want to risk being bitched at, so they don't leave concrit at all. This way they would know if it will be welcome.

Sounds good to me!

(marvel at the brevity of this post for a moment.) :)

I don't really see who would object to being given more options.  Go for it.
