Xena

I just got finished watching "The Quest" you know where Xena died in the previouse eppie. Well Gabby is taking her body back to Anphipolos (sp?) to be placed next to her brother in the family crypt. She gets stopped by the Amazons since she is the Amazon Princess and is made queen.

Well Xena takes over Atalicus' body so that he can help her steal her body back so that she can get some ambrosa (fruit of the gods) and eat it to come back to life.

Now I know she's out for redemption and saving the wrold from baddies like she used to be. But what I get from this eppie watching it now, not lake when I first saw it years ago, is that she only wanted to come back because she left Gabrielle. She speaks through Atalicus to Gabby and them kisses her. To me it was a selfish act, to come back to the person that you loved, not beacuse you wanted to continue working for good and saving the world.

If anyone remembers this eppie or has recently watched it, what are your thoughts on it?

Redemption is a rocky road, most of the time our heroes  do it for loved ones then the greater good, because sometimes the greater good is to vast to grasp. In fact love and redemption starts at home and champions tend to not make it without "connections" in the world. Atleast she fought herself back, the reasons shuldnt matter too much, either way it was for love which is pretty good as reasons go. Champions are never perfect thats what endears them to us. With Xena, well its been pretty much all about Gabrielle for years by then.

I think that the fact that she worked for good in the first place says something.  That always seems to be a rocky road to some people- only doing good things for "selfish" (like for someone you love) reasons.  But really, do the reasons in particular matter as long as the good gets done?  So what if she was selfish to see the one she loved?  She sacrificed a lot of time of her adult life doing good deeds and saving people she didn't have to save.  No one had put a gun to her head or anything... Doing good things is good period, regardless of what one's reasoning is.

For instance- Buffy wasn't going to save the world this time until Dawn was ready to jump in that portal herself.  She only did it to save her sister.  Spike only got a soul to prove a point to Buffy, and to be better for her.  It's still all good.

Or, if some rich person just wanted to see their name in headlines or talked about in the news, and decides to like donate a million bucks to a charity or something publicly, then what's the harm?  He or she could've done something bad instead, and probably gotten a whole lot more exposure, as is so typical in tabloids and Hollywood these days...

And I used to love that show growing up- kick ass, GB ;)

Well there must be some incentive to do any good deed.  It's not always about altruism.  We are only human and most of us want some sort of egoboo.

I agree with all your points, but I'm still torn, lol. I mean I get that, that she loved Gabby, hell I love my best friend too. But I don't know if that was enough if I was a fic character to come back from the dead for. I don't know, I just feel that she should have had a greater reason than coming back for Gabby. Gabrielle could have been like reason number two, but like helping to better humanity by ridding the wrold of evil gods would have been number one, lol.

Like with Spike, yes he got the soul for Buffy, but I also think his desire for it was to better himself. (though I think he was good without it). He needed that moral compuse to help aid him in his fight for redemption.

And with Buffy, yes she didn't jump until Dawn was about to open the portal, but not only did she do it to save her sister she also did it to prevent all the portals from being open and destroying her world. So in both their cases, it was a bouble bonus in getting a soul and saving a sister. Whereas Xena only wanted to come back for Gabby. I'm still on the fence. But now I'm watching the Hunting of Anphipolos. I love Xena, I wish they had given us a season seven. But after Kevin Smith (Ares) died who could they ever get to replace him? He was hot and good for her. Since I know they would have ended up together someday, lol. Ok, I'm done babbling... for now.

Aries is dead?  Didn't know that...

Okay, Spike only got the soul for love- he only did it to be a better man cause he thought it was what Buffy wanted.  He really wasn't worried about his own moral compass, until his precious Buffy had a problem with it.  And Buffy wasn't gonna jump until....

And Gabby was Xena's girlfriend.  She found her way back for love :D

They were definalty more the just friends... and then again they wernt strictly lesbian either so , Bi? anyways..  yea i dont see her comming back for gabrielle as a friend so much as because she truly loved her. She was a reason why Xena even stayed on the path.

Ares dead? waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat
