A Gift Unsought by Peaceheather

Yay they are on the right track, now for some research. So hope they realise Spike's still around. Great update, nearly missed it.
12/20/2012 02:02 am
I clicked on your story this morning on a whim and could not stop reading once I started. Can't wait to see where you take this!
You're very kind, thank you. I ordinarily don't respond to reviews until right before the next chapter goes up, but it's been awhile and I didn't want to leave you hanging. Cheers!
12/18/2012 08:05 pm
Great to see an update. Giles and Willow were due a chewing out or two. So looking forward to the big reveal though. They can all vent on Angel then
How they respond to Angel remains to be seen - largely because I haven't decided that yet, myself.
12/16/2012 10:27 pm
Please stay motivated! That was angsty awesomeness!
I'm having a rough Christmas - the more angst the merrier. Bring it on.
Whereas if I read angst right now I'll probably give up and run off to join the circus. I'm glad it's helping you, though. Cheers!
12/16/2012 11:20 am
Great story, it is very enjoyable. I have been keeping track of this story since it was posted and am happy to see a new update, I really want to know more about what is going on with Spike. Thank you for sharing this story.
Hopefully this latest chapter will give you a bit more Spike to keep you interested - it has been awhile since we've looked in on him, hasn't it? Very happy that you are enjoying.
11/01/2012 02:00 am
I fear that the consequences of what we've done will be felt for years to come…
Oh, is this going to be explored more? I didn't check the date this was posted, but if it was recently, I suggest you stop reading my stuff and get back to writing it. Now, please.
It's been only a couple weeks, and the answer is "yes, eventually". Real Life and another story idea are ganging up on me and demanding my time at the moment, so there will likely be a delay before anyone sees that next chapter. Alas.
10/28/2012 12:57 pm
Super update. I'm guessing the conniving duo are Lyndsey and Eve. Wonder what mischief they're gonna cause. Almost feel sorry for Gile's, appears to have the weight of the world on his shoulders. Hope he can help Buffy.
Glad you're enjoying - unfortunately real life and a second story idea are both hitting me over the head and demanding my time just now, but I do certainly intend to finish this fic. It's just going to be delayed. Hope you don't mine the wait too much!
09/21/2012 10:39 am
Stupendous intervention, if that doesn't make Angel think nothing will. The whole team was brilliant in their outrage loved it.
I'm glad you appreciated it - I tried to make them all believable rather than just set up Angel as the Designated Ass for the story.
09/18/2012 12:29 am
Excellent update! I really like how they all ganged up on Angel, but in a very believable way. Waiting patiently for the next installment!
Thanks! Writer's block for me has manifested itself as a series of plot bunnies for other stories that aren't this one. In an effort to shut them up I just posted a one-shot called Unsung. Hopefully that will get me otivated to do a little more with this story sooner, rather than later.
09/16/2012 11:05 am
Great to see this update. I love how everyone gave Angel a whole lot of home truths to digest, let's hope he acts on them... in a good way of course!
I'm still trying to decide how Angel is going to handle this information - not that I watched earlier seasons much, but Season 5 really seemed to be about Angel losing sight of the mission and losing confidence in the rightness of what he was trying to accomplish. Hopefully I've portrayed both that, and his friends calling him on it. Cheers!
09/16/2012 08:57 am
Great chapter, things are moving along quite nicely. Angel is such an ass.
Heh. Hopefully he's a believable ass, though. Glad you enjoyed!
08/10/2012 01:54 pm
Things are never easy for these two. Buffy still thinks Spike's dead and it's hard to know what Spike thinks. Will he remember their meetings, I hope so. Angel's not gonna be happy when he hears about Spike's transformation, I fear for him in the clutches of W&H. We need the Scoobies to ride to the rescue. Great update, looking forward to more.
07/31/2012 12:13 am
Ack! How did I miss this awesome update? The plot is definitely thickening. Keep stirring!
07/26/2012 04:48 am
Ooh, very interesting! Live? ish? Spike!
Btw, this is a minor point, but I suspect Dr. Sato (if he's Japanese) would say ne? (pronounced neh) at the end of sentences, rather than hai. Nee (pronounced neh but longer) if it were a question.
Of course, his particular quirk could be different, but ne is used very commonly at the end of sentences in Japanese conversation. It's short for so desu ne, which means roughly, "isn't that right".
Oh, thanks for that! I didn't know. I may edit or I may be too lazy to go back, but I'll definitely keep it in mind for future conversations.
11/01/2012 01:39 am
Remind me not to use that level of sarcasm on myself ever again, she thought. Only one of many very Buffy-like and clever lines. I'm zipping along from chapter to chapter, so not reviewing every one (bad, Patti, bad!), but had to make note of that line.
Thank you - I was kind of proud of it, myself.
07/25/2012 01:13 am
I've really enjoyed the story so far. I've got my own theory about why Buffy reacted as she did after Spike got brought to W&H, but I'm not going to say.
That's okay, I'm not going to either... at least, not yet.
07/23/2012 07:23 pm
I'm glad Fred's awake, I really don't like having Spike at the mercy of Wolfram and Hart, definately not to be trusted. Don't know what to think about Spike's brain activity, is it due to his connecton with Buffy, or is he becoming a real boy? Don't think Angel would like that and if he turned human would he really be Spike.
You raise so many questions and ideas that I can neither answer, confirm, nor deny, argh!
If it helps, the title "A Gift Unsought" was chosen after much thought and deliberation. I'm using it to help me resolve plot points, answer my own questions, and keep a thematic focus. And that's about all I can tell you!
07/22/2012 12:25 am
just got to read the last 3 chapters - this is so interesting, I find myself reading and re-reading to make sure I got it all, very intriguing magic explanation and the connection between Spike and Buffy is also intriguing. I do really like this story, so glad you are keeping us on edge and finishing this chapter with "hello pet" well, just ooohh! I could hear those luscious tones!
Yeah, my inner nerd has been percolating again. I swear half the time I only write these stories so I can tell people "no no, THIS is how the world works, listen!" Like this one: how is it that vampires are almost impossible to poison, yet respond to drugs all the time? (Answer: MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE WITHOUT FANWANK DAMMIT.) Glad you're enjoying!
07/21/2012 04:05 pm
Hmm. Brain stem activity. The science geek in me is very intrigued! And of course, the Buffy geek in me likes the way the chapter ended...
Well, I aim to please...
07/15/2012 11:14 am
Well that's not good, can Buffy kill herself in her sleep? Willow needs to get back and investigate what's going on with Buffy's soul. If it's with Spike maybe they can track it down to LA. It's typical that Angel's still causing Buffy misery. Great update.
Glad you're enjoying. Have another chapter.
07/15/2012 10:30 am
Yikes not a good dream, poor Buffy can't even get a break when she's asleep! Looks like Dawn's realising it's time to grow up at last, she's getting there.
The birds have all left the nest, and Dawn's more mature than many people realize, in my opinion. She's lived through quite a lot.
07/14/2012 03:15 pm
Just catching up on this. I'd forgotten about it. I'll keep an eye out for the updates now.
Cool! Is there a way for BSV to notify readers of updates? 'Cause I can't seem to find one, but maybe I'm just looking in the wrong spots.
07/14/2012 02:59 am
Oh that is soooo not fair! So well written, so heartbreaking, and you're going to make me wait for the next chapter. You're a cruel person, but I love the story.
Hopefully this chapter will ease your pain somewhat.
07/13/2012 04:14 am
You evil woman! I can't.... How could... Poor Dawn Ugh I am speechless! Evil cliffhanger!!!
I feel kinda bad that your review made me laugh out loud. Well, chuckle evilly, but still. Not just in my head. There was actual sound.
Yep. I just reread it and got a big ol' grin on my face again. Awesome.
07/15/2012 10:57 am
Oh poor Buffy, well we knew she was in a bad way. Wonder if she really has lost part of her soul, or if it's with Spike. Further investigation is certainly needed.
She's definitely suffering...
07/11/2012 06:08 pm
Wow, what a fantastic story! Looking forward to more soon, great job!
Many thanks! And if you need a fix in between updates, go check out my other story, Distress Signals. It's complete so you won't get stuck in a cliffhanger or anything.
07/11/2012 01:00 pm
So Buffy is missing a piece of her soul huh? At the same moment Spike pops out of the amulet. Guess that answers the question of Angel being her soul mate. Hopefully one of the fang gang will call Giles or even Willow. But then we have to hope that one of them will do the right thing and let Buffy know Spike is back. But knowing them they won't for her own good.
All I can say is, wait and see. Glad you're enjoying.
07/11/2012 04:59 am
I mean this in the best possible way, but
What an amazingly gripping cliffhanger!
If you need me I'll be here tapping my feet, waiting for the next installment (tap, tap, tap...)
*laugh* I love your review. It made me smile.
Oh, and hey, I just realized you're the brain behind Fallen Angel. I *love* the story so far. Do you ever post over at Elysian Fields?
Also - Chapter 7 is coming.
07/07/2012 03:22 pm
I really liked Buffy's explanation to Dawn about how she feels.
Excited to read more!
Many thanks. It was a hard chapter to write, having to get into Buffy's head and that tremendously depressed state.
06/29/2012 10:49 pm
excellent - wonderful writing, just the the right amount of emotion to make my eyes blink several times, Spike knows not to hurt this girl and Buffy sorting things out in her head, I loved this chapter, so glad you are back writing this. I do need another chapter though - when you can, please.
Thanks! A larage part of the delay this time around was that I simply didn't want to put myself in Buffy's shoes long enough to write her. I tend to feel what the characters feel, or else I can't write their emotions in a was that feels believable to me. And I didn't really want to sink into Buffy's pain, ya know? Hopefully I'll be able to get the next chapter out more quickly.
06/29/2012 05:08 pm
Great update, heart rending stuff. Wish one of the A team would get their act together and let Buffy know what's happening. The betrayal goes on. I did wonder if Dawn would pick up on Buffy's comment about feeling Spike. Given their experiences it's not that weird to wonder if he's still around. Really enjoying this fic, looking forward to more.
Bear in mind that Spike has been back for less than 24 hours in this time line. They simply haven't had time to notify her.
03/20/2012 08:19 pm
Ohhh... I wasn't expecting that. Wow Spike's gone all primeval, without the beer. I hope Fred's safe, I know Spike would feel terrible if anything happened to her. Great update, looking forward to more.
03/12/2012 09:37 pm
I only watched the odd episode of Angel s5, so I missed most of his interaction with Angel and the A1 team. I do hope Spike's not gonna let him undermine his confidence where Buffy's concerned. He seems to have his number, but you can never tell. Wes was acting like a mini Giles, you'd think as a former Watcher he'd be more interested in Spikes role in the last almost apocalypse. I really hope breaking the amulet fixes Spike's problem, I don't want him to spend too much time with Angel. He's a bed influence. Great update.
Much (though thankfully not all) of the dialogue was lifted from the episode itself. http://buffyworld.com/angel/transcripts/090_tran.html However, the show's goal was to keep Spike around to boost the series' ratings, so they kept him a ghost for several episodes and gave him a motive not to go after Buffy. And for some reason the amulet never appears on the show, at all, after this ep. We don't even see what happens to it. If you ask me, this is a plot hole just *begging* to be exploited.
I'm not aiming for a season rewrite or even an episode rewrite, really - despite all the parts I included. My goal was a: to get Spike out of there faster, and b: to showcase Spike's viewpoint and thoughts, so some dialogue where Wesley does ask Spike questions was removed. I could offer the idea that Angel and Co. discussed the apocalypse themselves before Spike returned, but it's anybody's guess whether or not they actually did. Trying to interpret canon when it crosses between two shows is... wonky.
As always, I'm glad you're enjoying, and thanks for the review!
03/11/2012 12:37 am
Terrific chapter. Loved the way you got inside Spike's head and showed us the real Angel/Angelus, this is exactly how I pictured Angel throughout season 5. Then you left us on a cliffhanger, I love the way you ended it there cos now I really need to read the next part soon!
Sorry this update took so long to write, but I hope it was worth the wait for you.
11/01/2012 12:25 am
This totally hit my angst kink button. So hard to feel Buffy be in such pain - even knowing that it's going to get better.
Thank you! Hopefully you'll be okay with the wait as I deal with Real Life demanding my time just now.
03/09/2012 12:23 am
wonderful writing - I had to read through tears, especially at Buffy's realisation that Spike was really gone, as I said before brilliant emtional depth.
Again, many thanks.
03/07/2012 06:14 pm
Well I think it was best Willow and Xander left when they did, at least Buffy will be spared the 'time to move on' speeches. I hope Buffy doesn't have to wait too long for the call from LA. Wonder who it will be. Super update.
I like to think this is the start of their growing-up time, for all of them. Glad you liked.
03/07/2012 01:33 pm
God Buffy's pain when she finally broke complety brought me to tears. There was so much heartbreak... I was seriously crying reading this.
Yayyy! Spike's back!
Can't wait for more.
I have never been sure if I was the type of author capable of bringing readers to tears, so this is quite a compliment for me. Thanks!
03/06/2012 01:21 am
Oh God, that was heartbreaking.
Heartbreaking is what I was aiming for, so yay! Um. You know what I mean.
03/05/2012 08:04 pm
Love it! The months of no Spike between Hellmouth and LA has always needed some filling in. I like this interpretation of his death experience. Can't wait to see where you take this.
Glad you liked, and I hope you enjoy the ride.
03/05/2012 03:43 pm
This entire chapter had me in tears. I hope Angel doesn't keep them apart. And Giles better not help Angel with that either.
As soon as she felt Spike leaving her I knew he was being pulled from the Amulet. They connected somehow when they held hands? So as long as he was in the amulet he was connected to her?
Giles has apologized. We'll see how their relationship develops, but he isn't the villain in this story.
As for the rest, you'll see.
03/06/2012 08:41 am
Super start, you write Buffy's pain really well.
Thank you. Angst is new ground for me, so I'm glad I'm pulling it off.
03/05/2012 03:04 am
I saw your name and jumped at the chance to read another of your stories.
Gotta tell ya, that's always nice to hear. Hope I don't disappoint with later chapters.
03/04/2012 12:15 am
Yay! Another Peaceheather story.
I really enjoy your writing, and I am looking forward to more.
You're very kind. I'm almost ready to post Chapter 2.
