One of the far better 'claim stories'  ive read. Other such stories seem many times to be entirely 'author indulgent' and very far from plausible, or some de-railed plot twist, turn our fav people in to mary-sues.

I feel you managed to keep yourself on the edge of the cliff without toppling over.

I usually stay well clear of 'Claim' stories because a cupple of chapters in or half way through, i have to stop reading because i can no longer 'believe' a line of it. But no i finished yours in one day and it was far from a chore, you gave without giving too much and you stay on the right side of that track.

Sweet---very sweet.  Bittersweet in places, sure.  I know I'd read this once already, but somehow, got into reading it again last night and had to hang on through the end---again!  I've come to recognize your writing as a guarantee of quality and entertainment, something that definitely will be enjoyed.  So,  as this was a somewhat minimalized (thank god, less Riley!, but also less Joyce, loss of her home, no Dawn, hey--no Drac, actually less seen of the Scoobs, unfortunately no Tara ?,  no Warren & Trio, no or extremely limited Angel, no Glory/Ben, no Byzantines, no crazies, no Doc, no death on a tower, no primeval energy raised to kill Adam  that upset the balances of good v. evil...ergo no req'd death...no resurrected/body snatching Faith tho that woulda been interesting in fhis sitch, essentially a LOT of "no's" ) S 4 & 5,  I think I would LOVE to see an adapted/"twisted" version of S6 &7 somehow, with some events just destined to happen anyway, a la' you!  I think I'd love to see your twist on things, how some thing might get woven into a story anyway, how some might never make it in or end up different.  Whaddya say? A Sequel? Oh, C'mon! Be a sport!  Oh, I was sad to see Joyce's house have to be sold--seems it might've made more sense had Willow actually RENTED or Giles done same rather than pay a stranger, when 95% of your time is going to end up being spent together anyway for slaying purposes...and as to Joyce's gallery---always in fic it  seems a shame to see it sold off when either Giles OR Spike have the knowledge and ability to handle such a venture---and in this respect, somebody would be needing to support his slayer or she'd need an income now that Mom was gone...ergo, Gallery. Even Anya, hey in 1100 yrs, ya learn a lot of art appreciation! LOL!.  Anyway, loved it, loving your current one too, and got started on this for the 2d time after reading to the most recent update in your current fic, and was looking to see if there was anything I hadn't read yet by you---started to read a little to determine whether or not I'd read this already, read a little more..and a little more....by this time knowing I'd read it previously, but not caring, and was totally drawn and sucked back into it soundly and until the last word!  Thanks, again!

Oh my god!  The best story I've read in a VERY long time.  I just want to say that the interaction between Spike and Buffy in this fic was supurb.  I liked the friendship in the first few chapteres.  I love your romantic Spike...bless him.  This had it all dear.  I'm glad you left Dawn out, and I'm glad that there wasn't too much Scoobie interaction.  Joyce...I love and miss Joyce.  Her interactions with Spike were so adorable and tender.  Great work.  Loved this fic to pieces!

Noooo, not another ending!  I think this time lapse ending was the right way to go for this fic. 

Buffy and Spike have already faced all of their relationship obstacles with each other so there wasn't much left to explore.  The death of Joyce made Spike's devotion clear to the Scoobies as well as making it very inappropriate for them to voice their concerns immediately upon discovering the relationship.  This ending allowed you to wrap up the events from the previous chapter and tie up any possible loose ends.  Well done! 

You should know by now that I thoroughly enjoyed this fic and absolutely love your writing!  I hope that whatever you have in the works won't be too long coming!

Sad to see Joyce had to die in order for the two of them to be together, but glad that it all worked out for them.

heart breaking chapter - I was hoping it would not come, but you did such an excellent treatment with it -

excellent chapter - I really like your version of this horrendous event in Buffy's life - it reads very real and would have been, if spuffy had been part of the series, a heartache but a great Buffy-Spike relationship realization of one aspect of Joyce's death. 

God, poor Buffy!  That was absolutely heartbreaking to read.  You really captured her shock and complete despair.  I hope she's not going to blame herself for not being there.  At least she has Spike to help her though this as long as she doesn't try to push him away.  I would love to see Spike move into the house to take care of Buffy and keep her from being alone.  Maybe this will keep the Scoobies from overreacting to her involvement with Spike if nothing else.

I was just waiting for this to happen, but I'm surprised it was so brutal.  And how did Spike manage to hurt Riley?  So glad Buffy just left him there.  Love the mother/daughter connection!

So did Spike take a bit out of Riley?  ("He was bleeding from a deep wound in his neck....")  It would have fried Spike's brain, but ended the fight.

I wish Joyce on the show had given Buffy more guidance and 'permission.'  I think it really would have helped her out.

 Big old sigh, you really ratcheted up the tension ther, I swear I was kinda holding my breath.

  Well that felt good to breathe again there, but the next two chapters seem like I am not going to be let off that easily.

Buffy should know better than to try to hide this from Joyce, it'll never work!  Love the heated confrontation with Riley!  I was glad he forced her into outing him in front of the Scoobies so they could see it for themselves.  Also love how Willow reacted like a best friend should during the Buffy breakdown!  Hope she can still be as supportive when she finds out about Buffy and Spike.

I have a feeling that the plastic stake is going to make an appearance.

I've always liked the way that Joyce treated Spike.  Having her on their side will definitely help.  I love the gentleness between Spike and Buffy in this scene.  Thanks.

Well that was a long time coming!  Enjoyed this chapter since it was the first nice one in a while.  Glad the truth about Riley is finally out and love how it made Buffy decide to stop denying her feelings for Spike!  So, did she claim him again?  It seemed like it but wasn't clear.  Also, really liked how accepting Joyce was of Buffy needing to patrol, it was a nice reassuring moment between mother and daughter.

A little surprized our skeptical Buffy didn't want proof about Riley - actually seeing him or the bite marks- but then I guess she wants to believe it - have a legitimate excuse to get rid of Riley.  Not that she should need one!

The fact that Buffy took Spike's work about Riley shows how much things have changed between them.  Nice chapter.

Could Riley be any more of a jerk?!?  And he calls himself a boyfriend?  Those are not the actions of a supportive boyfriend who loves you.  Poor Buffy!  She needs Spike but all she'll let herself have are stolen moments and Riley.  Is it somewhere in the Slayer Handbook that the Chosen One must be miserable in order to be worthy of her calling and capable of saving the world?  Still waiting for the big Riley screw-up that will (hopefully) send Buffy into the arms of Spike (for good his time)!

Spike is too good to her!  I'm glad that Buffy acknowledges that Spike is the only one who can make her feel better, but being close to her for her to pull away again is going to kill him.  Suspect Riley's anger is going to cause trouble but nothing new there!

However, I have gone back and forth from screaming at buffy to wanting to smack her hard.  Now, she is showing some sense...i just pray she doesn't play kick the spike in the morning.

I have no idea how Buffy manages to deal with all of this because it's almost too much for me, and I'm only reading it.  I'm guessing Buffy is gonna get curious about what Spike told her.  I'm also gonna guess that he's going to be the one she seeks comfort from when she finds out her mom is sick.  I wish she would so the smart thing and listen to Joyce because if I've learned one thing it's that Moms' advice is pretty much a sure bet!

I'm really getting used to stupid Buffy.  She went over there more for herself than Spike and just made things worse.  Love Joyce's interrogation of Riley.  It showed exactly where her allegiances are, with Spike!  Looking forward to Buffy finally throwing Riley to the curb for good!

Very good chapter. Buffy is being shown in character but still softer and trying to be more considerate than she often was, even though she's totally blind again about her feelings for Riley. You can't make yourself love someone because you think you should anymore than you can stop loving someone because you shouldn't. Just ask Spike! I love seeing his new reaction to Buffy being with a guy but still gets across his feelings for her so poignantly.

Buffy is being really pathetic - surely she can see nobody's happy.

You know what, ? you made up for last chapter (22)  because this one was great. I know that many may think it was evil of Spike to send other vampires to bite her in retalation for her hurtful words, but I think she deserved it. (I only hope he was nearby to crontol that they didn´t kill her,) but the idea was great and something I could understand a Spike from 4 season would do. Great.   Thank you for updating so soon.

I´m sorry, but this was a very unlogical reaction. There is no reason for Buffy to react this way and to be so cruel with Spike. I mean, in season six, yes, because they ended having sex after fighting and telling eachother hurtful things, so I could understand she would go in denial, but here? Spike has been nice, saved her, she nows his thoughts, she knows about William the poet, and she uses that to be hurtful to him,? that was low, and even though you write that she is lying I really can´t understand why she does it.... I really can´t , so I hope you have an explanation for it, because I really liked you story and this chapter just ruined that a little....

Ouch!  Those two have always been able to hurt each other like no one else.

Well that just about killed me!  It was no surprise that she went to Riley.  It was the easiest way to keep up appearances and hide her real feelings from everyone, including Spike.  How she expects to be a girlfriend to him and not be physically ill, I have no idea!  What I wasn't expecting was for Buffy to be so cruel when confronted by Spike.  After that explosion, I know things are only going to get worse, and this self-denial is only going to hurt both of them but hopefully not beyond repair.

okay, i'm finding it too hard to like this buffy, i don't know why she would treat spike like that.  there's no reason for it, she's acting too much like season 6 buffy.  sorry, but i think i will be giving up on this story, i'll just keep reading your other one, i like it much better.

My gosh that was a difficult scene to read! Poor Spike, doesn't she realize what she's doing to him? Great writing on her thoughts and reactions to the whole thing, and how she thinks she's doing whatever she's doing for both of them. I wonder how far Spike's feelings go at this point?
Can't wait for the next update! I'm so excited to see what Spike might do in retaliation. I don't understand why Buffy can't just admit she felt something, especially when she was so sweet while knowing he was awake when she left. If she thinks she can hurt him enough that he'll stay away she really doesn't know him. It's going to be painful for both of them and you're showing it very well.

I think my heart just broke!  I had so hoped this night together would help Buffy change her mind and allow her to reassert her claim.  But of course she has to be typical Buffy and deny herself any happiness if others could deem it wrong in any way.  Poor Spike being allowed to have what he truly wants and then have it taken away!  I will continue to suffer through the angst, but I expect a happy ending!

Drusilla returned to claim him, but did he say that she left? And even if she did, that might have just driven home to Spike some truths he's trying to deny with those hurtful words to Buffy. Thought this was an excellent chapter and it's so nice to see the feelings growing with the sexual tension but without making it mushy or unrealistic to the characters. It's building and I can't wait to see the peak! Great job.

I can understand the Buffy freakout because someone is messing with her life again, and it is Willow's fault even if it wasn't done purposely.  What I don't get is why she had that big of a reaction.  I think it had more to do with wanting t kiss Spike than being magically forced to kiss Spike!  Anyway, love this fic and where it's going!

Wait - is the something blue a reference to an event that actually happened, or is that just part of Buffy's growing obession, or maybe something that Willow has yet to do, or a memory that she has suppressed?  Sometimes I get confused in these WIP.

  Lol, it's funny, most writers of fanfic love to pontificate on the romance and dialog, but your very brief and to the point.  You seem to take it as a given that your audience knows this world and can follow along easily.  I gues with such an esoteric subject you'd be right,  and what you are doing here does work. I know it's working for me anyway, you give just enough to be satisfying. Despite all this I do find myself wanting more.


  I guess that means you're doing a good job huh?

Interesting rewrite of season 4. Even without Angel showing up, Rilely shows his inability to get past certain prejudices.

Really nice update. I can't believe Riley's obsession with Spike even as he's apologizing, even as he's talking about how to spend time with Buffy! Now I'm worried he'll do something to Spike while the vampire can't defend himself.
I really like seeing this side of Spike, and I think showing Buffy having that dream was a wonderful idea. So we know Buffy's feelings are changing, but we don't know if Spike is just showing his true colors or if he's fallen for her too but is handling it more quietly. It shows Spike a lot more as an equal, despite the chip.
I love using the word 'rush' in that last line, too. It makes me think of how kissing or fighting could give Buffy a 'rush' and I'd like to know what Buffy's thinking about the sensation later on. Great work!

  I love the execution of this.  S/B are actually kind of friends after a certain point.  It's really kind of nice.
  I really liked the way Spike encouraged Buffy with Riley,  It's such an original concept.  Usually there is a tonne of Riley hate, even when authors aren't going for that, but here it was all kind of sweet.  I am by no means a Riley fan, I thought he was really wooden and boring, but I was smiling for Buffy when she gave him a try.

Wow, he's insecure!  Not that Riley doesn't have anything to worry about because the developing feelings are kinda noticeable but you'd think he'd trust Buffy a little more after their time together.  Not that I really care how he feels since now there can be more of Spike comforting Buffy!  And that Giles freakout, knew it was coming!  Also, love how Anya knew exactly what was going on and made it very clear for the Scoobies!

I'm so glad Buffy went to rescue Spike, but she really should have been the one to end the relationship with Riley rather than the other way around. She's so desperate for her 'normal boyfriend' she just can't see that Riley isn't normal, or that it's wrong to pursue a relationship with him while she's linked to Spike. Hopefully once she's had time to think about it she'll realise that.
Now I've gone and written an essay...sorry... loving the story even if I think that Buffy is being a bit wimpy.

this buffy is too weak for my tastes, and i hate that riley had to be the one to end things when she should have done it a long time ago.

Thanks for the two chapters in one day!  Glad to see Riley moving on.  Maybe now Buffy will see what she actually has in Spike.

Love Buffy running off to help Spike!  Have a feeling Riley's dislike for Spike is going to cause even more problems in the future.  Also suspect the Scoobies may be getting suspicious!

I suspect Spike is starting to have feelings for Buffy, but he hasn't quite figured them out yet. Buffy's "he’d rather have the pleasure of killing me himself" excuse isn't going to work for much longer, especially if Spike keeps doing things that seem out of character to the others. I find it interesting that Buffy was actually trying to use the claim to read him almost like she welcomes its presence now!

Riley getting suspicious and paranoid already... and Spike clearly has stronger feelings than he's admitting. Excellent. More please.

Buffy and Spike are going to have to try harder to keep this secret. Just by the way they are acting people are going to figure it out soon. But I am glad that he saved her and is trying to play nice. But I think that Buffy and the crew just accepted him with open arms. Just a great chapter.

Liked this chapter, and that little hint of Spike's changing feelings. Riley's jealousy was interesting. Usually he has reason to, like witnessing the sexual tension between Spike and Buffy, but this is just showing his insecure paranoia or his view on 'hostiles'. I've only got a one-track mind so I only think that this will mean Buffy won't feel guilty when she breaks up with him to be with our favorite vampire!
Nice writing and good work with Riley, without overdoing it like some fics.

I think you're treating Riley very fairly, which a lot of writers don't bother to do, and I'm really interested to see how you handle writing him finding out about Buffy being set up. After all, this isn't like the steady relationship on the show. In fact, this is the third person Buffy has ever slept with, and the third 'one night'for sleeping with a guy and immediately having something awful happen. Poor girl's going to get a complex. I wonder if Spike will be able to help her with that?

And so it begins! I can already see the changes in their tentative friendship and how they're slowly getting closer. Love Spike's reaction to Buffy's flashback! I do hope that the Scoobies find out eventually about the reciprocated claim b/c it's lots of drama and angst just waiting to explode.

I sensing here that neither of them has a clue, and that there will be more consequences than either of them foresaw. But it does seem in character for both - both headstrong and impetuous and impatient.

Great chapter! Love the need for a two-way claim to maintain Buffy's sanity. And Spike comforting Buffy because of his memories is sweet and twisted at the same time. Hoping for another quick update!

I'm glad Buffy can see the vulnerable side of Spike, not just the human he was. Very well done. I also wonder just what rules you've come up with for what claiming means and how this will affect the two of them. Also, looking forward to some steamy biting in the next chapter! Can't wait to see how you do it.

Spike took more convincing than I thought he would - and he put on his pants too! But then, it sounds like neither of them really know what they're getting themselves in for, unless Spike is a better liar here than he seems.

Why weren't Riley and company wearing masks? The easier to bring Buffy and Riley to this point? Not so sure about the openess thing especially if Walsh is in the picture.

Riley seems much more icky with the claim in place! Of course, if this is S4 then Captain Cardboard must be present, and I don't usually have much dislike for Riley until S5, but here I find myself wishing he made Buffy physically ill. Glad you answered my question so I now know Buffy was feeling Spike's actual physical pain. Love the quick updates!

I don't trust him. Get to know more meaning do experiments on to find out more? It's interesting to see Spike attracted to Buffy but not evil and not in love with her. His words were almost comforting about being with Soldier Boy and maybe knowing Buffy will see his thoughts and memories will affect Spike too. Good chapter.

One thing I loved about Spike was that he was the exact opposite of a lot of 'bad boys'. he was romantic and could be sweet and wonderful, but he hid it under a tough guy image. Too many times a guy pretends to be sweet and romantic and vulnerable but is hiding that he is really a callous jerk. I wonder just what makes Spike think certain, revealing things and if Buffy will be able to hide her reaction to them? I also wonder what memories he'll think of just because he knows she can hear them, like Don't Think This! pops into his mind.

Love that Buffy has no idea what's going on! And the dreams/memories were a great touch! Wish we could see more of Spike, get a glimpse into what he's going through, if anything. Ok, just wishful thinking here, but I would love to see Buffy start to feel some of what Spike feels strongly enough that she reacts to it, especially towards Riley. I love the idea that Buffy is seeing some of Spike's memories; that's a new twist. I wonder if seeing herself when Spike's the one looking at her will have an affect on her? Does Spike even realize she can hear him, or does he know she's seen some of his memories?
The date with Riley is being handled perfectly. It's realistic and in character, and Buffy isn't throwing herself at him or in denial or trying too hard. I wonder if it was her own boredom or Spike's at the beginning of the date? It could have been either!
