Big Spuffy reading treat - like how you ended this part -  I like your Spike very much.

Good read though! :-)

Superb story and excellent writing.  The characterizations are spot-on and really great dialogue.  Such a tear-jerker of an ending!  Hope to see part 3 sometime soon.
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it! The third and fourth stories in this series are both completed and posted here. The third is called "Other Things the Road to Hell is Paved With" and the fourth is "Slay Bells."

How tragic and sad. I really would like to hope that things will continue to evolve as this story continues... I will read on and continue to hope things will turn a bit brighter...
I think the thing about this series i that it gets brighter and then darker, and then brighter again... and so on. It's a pretty long story - even if I don't rewrite the whole season - so there's lots of ups and downs.

Since there's a part three to this, I'm not in the least bit upset. Looking forward to reading it too. It was never easy for them, so be it for now. Thanks again for sharing your wonderful stories with us.
Thanks for the review, Verda! I'm glad you enjoyed this one. It's not easy, but when they finally get together, it'll be worth it.

Ah, sad ending. Guess I better get up to speed on the sequel!
Yup yup! Thanks for the review!

If I didn't know there was more I'd probably be upset right now. But then again maybe not it was so well written especially Spike's thoughts at the end. The "not with me" line sorta captures the whole idea doesn't it?
Heh, I think a lot of people would've been upset if I ended it there... I'm just not ready to make 'em happy yet. :)

Guh! I can't wait for the next one! I noticed this was completed here, so I was so excited to read! Amazing story! Heartbreaking and perfect. Looking forward to the next! :D
Oh, you naughty girl! I'll get caught up on the other sites eventually. :) Thanks for the review.

You said sequel. Yes, please!
Yep, it's already in the works - it's called "Other Things the Road to Hell is Paved With." Chapter 2 should be up sometime this week.

Very sad ending, completely tragic. I couldn't stop reading the story. Its 4a.m. and my eyes are still glued to the computer screen. Well done.
Hehe, I've done that, stayed up all night because I couldn't tear myself away from a good story. It's a great compliment to hear that you were that into it. :)

Such lovely angst that you weave in the story. Looking forward to the Sequel. I think that they are going to be sooo good together once they overcome their obstacles that you set in the way. Such fun!
Thank you for the review! I'm glad you enjoyed it!

The end? Already? NOOOOO!!!!! :'(
All good things, my friend...

awww, poor spike...could have predicted she would do that, buffy's still not reached a point where she can just allow herself to be happy...though i have to say that the dreams, combined with her past experience, are a reasonable cause for her to be uneasy about taking things any further...if it'd been just her, or just him, it'd be different, but for them to have almost the same dream...i'm guessing the first is going to show up in the next fic???
anyway, this fic has been lovely and i'm very much looking forward to seeing where you go with the next in the series :)
Yeah, I think she's got a reason to be skittish. I don't plan on bringing in the First (as a villain, I really didn't like it) - that was mostly Buffy's explanation/rationalization for the dream. But there will be plenty of other evil things to keep them busy. :) Thanks for the review! I'm glad you've enjoyed it.

What a perfect ending! Fluff would be so out of character for this Buffy and Spike; the angst just feels honest. It's painful, but in that good way. This Buffy and Spike have a long way to go and a lot learn. I'm hopeful that they will get there eventually though, and avoid some of the destructiveness of canon season 6.

I'm very relieved to hear that you're continuing this series though. I've become very attached to your Buffy and Spike, not to mention your Dawn! I'd like to think that the angst isn't the end for them...

Gorgeous writing here (as I've come to expect from you!) and such vivid details. The dreams were so painfully visceral. Gah!

Looking forward to the story!

Aww, thanks! I've gotten pretty attached to them, too. :) There's definitely more angst in store for them, but we'll see if we can't give them a little happiness, too.

Gorgeous, me dear, simply gorgeous. You have done a spectacular job with this fic, you should be very proud.
This story does feel very unresolved, and although I love the angst, I cannot deal with an ending like this... so I'm thrilled you have already starting the next update. I have no doubt in my mind that I will be checking for the sequel every day.
This particular chapter was very well written. The emotions are very clear, and I loved the small amounts of Dawn interaction you added. They were very well characterized (both the emotions and the Dawn interactions). I especially enjoyed Spike's thoughts at the end of the chapter. These particular phrases did me in: "...Spike was no Angel. No big epic story of redemption. He just loved a girl.." So nicely put, just gorgeous:D

-:love Cant wait for more:D
Thanks for the review! I don't think that, because it doesn't have a happy ending, that makes it unresolved. In fact, I toyed with ending it differently, but I really felt like Spike's reflections at the end were a conclusion to the theme - that he is Love's Bitch... and that doesn't mean he gets the girl.

I'm glad you enjoy the story so much! I really appreciate the kind comments.

How DARE Buffy just treat him this way in the morning. I can't believe it. But in the end he knows the type of woman she is and he is man enough to do anything to be near her. Even if that is all he gets. MAN, I really just hope that Dawn is not so disappointed... Just an awesome story. And I am glad that you had the insight to already tell me that the next story is in the works... I would have been so disappointed as well if this was it. Loved this and the last one and I can't wait to get the next.
I don't think Buffy's out of line - there are legitimate concerns, and she shouldn't be jumping headfirst into something she's not ready for. Thanks for the review!

05/14/2007 07:11 pm
Buffy is just so...broken and confused. She's being awful to him, but we're all capable of awful for self preservation. That dream certainly didn't help either. Interesting that you're bringing in the First.
Next?
Well, *I* didn't bring in the First - Buffy did. :) Not saying that was the cause of the dream, just that it's the first connection Buffy made.

More please, they just have to get together.
Well, there's definitely more coming... no promises on the togetherness of them. ;)

Bitter note to end this part but realistic. Buffy is, of course, a complete idiot. Spike is not Angel and never has been. Geez she might as well decide to become gay because all her "guy" experiences have been bad thus far! You don't judge one relationship by a previous one...even with a vampire.

Looking forward to the next part. Of course, Spike could just say to hell with her crap and move on to someone who would adore being loved by him. Not gonna happen though.

Glad he held her off though because she doesn't deserve his love at this point. If she can't see it worth working together to build, she's not ready.

Kathleen
Buffy's definitely not ready. She still has some hurdles ahead - but Spike's not the kind of guy to move on.

I do think she's normal, though, in judging relationships based on past ones. I think everybody does it, to some degree - there are plenty of people who are afraid to trust or to commit to someone because they've been hurt before, and they expect the same problems to repeat in other relationships. Not that that makes it *right* - but it is understandable.

05/13/2007 06:51 pm
Completely believable ending for this Buffy, and really well done. Spike seems wise enough to realise he's on a no-winner at the moment. He should go away for a while and give her time to enjoy normal.
Thanks for the review. I think, right now, Buffy's actually at a point where "normal" isn't her priority anymore - but she's realizing that there are some things about being a Slayer that not even having a superhuman boyfriend can solve.

05/13/2007 06:28 pm
Ah - thanks for not going with the fluffy ending. It is so much more real this way. ;)
I don't think I know how to write a fluffy ending... lol. So, I'll just have to keep tormenting them until I learn. :)

05/13/2007 06:06 pm
Beautiful chapter, but yours always are. I have to admit when Spike choked back his tears, I was choking back mine, as well. Spike's stream of consciousness near the end (particularly the part about not being "a big epic story of redemption") was wonderfully written and very true to character. As always, I'm looking forward to more in the series ... and if anyone dares come after you with pitchforks, you know you can hide behind me. :)
Aww, thanks, dearie! Nice to hear it moved you. And you know I always appreciate a good human shield, but I think I'll be okay with this one. :)

05/13/2007 04:23 pm
"No big epic story of redemption. He just loved a girl, and if that made him a fool, so be it."
Gorgeous line. This was a perfect ending to this installment in your series, and I can't wait for the next!
Thanks! I was hoping people would see it as the best fit for ending the story, even if it's not the happy ending they wanted. Glad you enjoyed it!

*grabs pitchfork and flaming torch*

Oh wait... did you say there's more?

*gently puts down pictchfork and flaming torch* :P

That was beautifully written and just perfectly in character! The ending fit well- Buffy running away like always, Spike's reflections on his love and life and how he just puts up with not being loved back, because that's what he always has done.

Your whole fic, this and the last one are so well written and so in character. Enough angst to make it true to the show and the characters, but different enough from the show that it's still interesting and there's still hope there. I cannot wait for the next part.
Ha! Clearly, I dogded a bullet there. :) I felt bad about ending it there, with Spuffy seemingly dashed on the rocks, and I considered combining it with the next story (for one loooong fic). But when I got to Spike's reflection at the end, I *had* to end it there - after all, it is called Love's Bitch.

05/13/2007 12:52 pm
That's just sad... Poor Spike!!
Poor both of them, I think...

05/13/2007 09:45 am
No pitchforks from this direction. Buffy is being quite honest here. And, unlike earlier in the fic, she's not being monumentally insensitive. The problem with reading in installments is that one can't keep in mind all the details -- so off hand I can't recall how you developed her character to get her to this place. But it's easier to respect her in this chapter than it was in the beginning. Looking forward to the next installment.
Well, you can take this opportunity to go back and read it again. :) Short answer - I think the love spell and Spike's subsequent kicking her out gave her a lot to think about, and in sorting through her issues, she understood him a little better. Not totally, because she still pushed too far, too fast, and then ended up backing away (which he was trying to avoid), but she's definitely getting better.

Well, he could leave now....at least for a while.

Where can they go from here, now that her mind is made up? All it'll be is painful if they're around each other, and Buffy will keep coming up with infinite reasons why she *shouldn't*. They stay around each other now, annd all it will be is awkward, and then bitter. Nothing he can do to make her look past her fears but become human...and then all she'll do is worry that he'll be killed.
The thing is - her mind is made up... for right now. But any number of things could happen to change the situation. Like in Intervention, how Buffy went from "Please let this story have a dusty ending" to "What you did was real, and I won't forget that" in the space of about 5 minutes - all because of what Spike did. So, don't look for either one of them to stay in the same mindset they're in for very long. :)

I absolutely loved this ending!!!!!!!!! It's so real, and true to the characters, yet they didn't really ruin anything between them, just need to figure some things out. I loved this story, and I thank you for sharing it with us, even when we may have wanted to kill you just a teensy bit, lol. I can't wait for the next installment. Thank You :D ! And thank you for writing it the way you intended.
Thanks so much! I'm glad to hear how much you enjoyed it - and I'm glad you didn't kill me when you wanted to. :)

I know see what you meant about the pitchforks . I'm glad that you're writing more. But I really want to smack Buffy.
Heh, I appreciate your restraint. :)
