Chapter 2

Buffy woke to the sound of the alarm going off. The only movement she made in reaction was one swift movement of her arm to hit the snooze button. She wanted to hold on to the precious dream she was having, even if it would only be for ten minutes longer.

In her dreams, not the unpleasant Slayer dreams, she could live and love the way she wanted to. Buffy had the precious freedom to choose her own path and be with whom she wanted, without judgment from her friends. As the minutes ticked away, she smiled as she thought about dancing in the arms of her black clad lover who was whispering terms of endearment in her ears.

The sun shining through her window was one sign the fantasy would soon be over. Finally, the snooze time ended and the noise from the radio alarm indicated it was time for Buffy to leave the comfort zone of her bed.

Sunnydale! You’re listening to 99.7 WTRO FM, where we play the best hits of today. So get up kiddies and get your stretch pants and leg warmers on for another fabulous day of school at Sunny D High!

‘Stretch pants? Leggings?’ Buffy repeated in her head, ‘That can’t be right.’

Next song up is one of the hottest songs out right now; Love My Way from The Psychedelic Furs.

The notes of a song were unfamiliar to the Slayer. Saddened that her favorite radio station had turned into some kind of retro station, she reached over to change the radio to another preferred channel.

You should have seen by the look in my eyes baby
There was something missing

Buffy recognized REO Speedwagon when she heard it. The song was on the regular rotation list on one of the radio station her mother had always listed to. She pushed her fluffy down comforter off her and sat on the side of her bed. Perplexed and desperate to find something contemporary to listen to, she tried a handful of other stations without any success. Growing frustrated, she figured that perhaps the Sunnydale University radio station might have something new.

Get the fuck up you lazy fuckers! If the Ramones didn’t just wake you up, then the Violent Femmes will.

Buffy thought maybe she was making progress, after hall she had heard of the Ramones. She had walked into Spike’s crypt a few times while the crypt loudly echoing the punk band’s music. Buffy would never tell Spike she really did not mind his taste in music; nevertheless, she figured these Violent Femmes might be okay then. After all, she was the Slayer and she liked violence.

After one minute of listening to Add It Up, she gave up. It was not her thing. She gave up and shut the radio off. Looking around her room for the first time, she noticed things were off kilter besides the music on the radio. Buffy looked at her alarm clock. It was her alarm clock, yet it wasn’t. She had the alarm clock when she was eight. It was white and had these cute little ear buds in the side so she could listen to the radio without her parents hearing.

Horrified that she may have been sent back in time, Buffy was relieved to realize she was still in Sunnydale, unfortunately her room did not reflect such. It was just decorated as if she was a teenager in the eighties. Tiger Beat posters with all the teen idols were on her wall. No longer did she have a CD collection, but she had a tape collection! Even the artists were different. There was no Michelle Branch, Matchbox 20, or Destiny’s Child. In their place were Duran Duran, Culture Club, and Debbie Gibson.

In the corner her rollerblades were replaced with roller-skates. On her chair in the place of her Nine West leather coat was a Barracuda jacket. No longer was the small Coach clutch she had spent a small fortune hanging off the closet door. Instead, she saw a teal Jordache hobo style purse. Further, walls to her room were hot pink, with miniature heart wallpaper with hearts going up the wall.

The Slayer was not sure if she should be frightened or not, but it was clear that magic was to blame.

While she pondered about the possible cause, Buffy also listened to the sounds of rock music coming from Dawn’s room. She recognized the song as Round and Round by Ratt. Buffy would have never shared with her friends now or back in LA that glam metal bands were her secret indulgence.

For the first time Buffy looked down at her pajama’s. Her tank top and shorts from the night before had been replaced with a Care Bears nightshirt. Horrified, the Slayer realized if that had changed about her, then so did everything else. Before she could look in the mirror, Dawn had burst into her room. Time was frozen for the moment as the two sisters looked at each other.

The silence was broken with Dawn’s laughter. Buffy slowly peaked into the mirror and let out a loud “No!”

“Oh my God Buffy,” Dawn managed to get out between laughing fits. “You look just like Sarah Jessica Parker did when she played that geek in Square Pegs.”

Buffy was horrified. While Dawn had been given the metal chick makeover, complete with big pouffy hair, Buffy had been screwed with the unruly curly hair and glasses. She looked over to the doorway where Dawn was standing. She could hear the others from last night also downstairs moving about the living room and making conversation.

The Slayer in her knew the situation was dire, and there was one thing that had to be done to make things right.

“Dawn, go to your room and get your shears, flat iron, blow dryer, makeup and anything else you think is necessary to fix this.”

Dawn promptly ran to her room and not only gathered the required tools but also a few outfits for her sister as well. She could hear someone starting to come up the stairs. She ran to the stairs to do damage control. There was no way she was going to let anyone see her sister like this. Despite the tension that had been between the two girls lately, there was no way she could embarrass her sister like this.

Especially when it was Spike coming up the stairs.
