the title kind of sums it up. for those that know me, i am out of the army now and under taking a task, which is turning out to be quite a bit more difficult. college. i'm sure many if not all of you can comisarate with the things i am about to lament to. first off, it's really expencive. i've already spent an arm and a leg on books and microsoft office and saw some peeps on the schools fb page that spent way more on books then i did. second off, holy cow that's alot of work. blackboard is the new thing, and you better beleive they are using it. i thought i'd go to class first day and then the ball would be rollin'. psht. with bb there is now stuff i have to already have completed by the first day. what's up with that. not that i went to college back in the day, but even high school didn't have bring this home work to class on the very first day. im just like geez. all but one of my five classes have posted their syllabuses and so far, i have seven papers, 80 hours of volenteer work, two group papers, and a brochure to make before the semester is over. i feel slightly over whelmed at the moment. *sigh* well. i kinda feel like buffy in season two, i just got done facing the master and now i have to deal with angelus....

Your heart will break, your tears will fall, but don't be suprised, if there is someone there, to catch you when you fall. Becuase you, yes you, are awesome.

I am a college professor, and I sympathize with the book prices. I know that a lot of textbooks are available in cheaper ebook versions, or you can rent them. But yeah, textbook prices just suck. Check out the library - you might be able to borrow some.

I also know that all the syllabi on the first day can seem overwhelming. But think of it this way: you know what's coming, and you know when its due. Put it all in a calendar and look at it, face it head on. So you will see that, yeah, midterm week is going to suck. But then you know not to plan an out of town trip for the weekend before. And maybe you'll see that, ok, Basketweaving 101 has homework due Thursdays and ThumbTwiddling 202 has homework due on Tuesdays. That means that Monday night is the night to spend on ThumbTwiddling, and Basketweaving has to wait until Wednesday.

Oh and another tip: don't let your professor hear you comparing them to an evil bloodsucking creature of darkness. We may BE evil creatures of darkness, but we have feelings too...

I work hard on the evil professor laugh....

BUAHAHAHA! Yes, you have a term paper due this week! And a final next week! BUAHAHAHA!!!

And because you knew about it all term, you get very little sympathy from the Dr. Evil.

(Although I did schedule the term paper due date on a different date than their big design class. I mean, I'm not COMPLETELY evil.)

Oh I know. I just sometimes need to break out the evil professor laugh, especially where my students can't hear me. (To any of my students who stumble across this and somehow connect it to me - go back to work. Nothing to see here. Move along.)

I meet a lot of students in your shoes. I remember college was a HUGE adjustment for me. I was a straight A student all my life. Then I got to college and I had to really work. I was used to getting stuff pretty easy, but there was a lot of stuff I didn't get, even after I worked hard at it, and I panicked at first. I had to get my brain around the fact that there were some classes that I was going to sweat blood to get a C and I was going to have to learn to be ok with that. I learned that sleep was far less necessary than I originally thought, that you sometimes had to choose between books and food (at least I did. I usually chose the books and lived on ramen), and that sometimes even your best efforts weren't enough. But I also learned that I could juggle a lot of things at once, that I could perservere and survive, and that gin and tonics fluoresce purple in blacklight. So if the perserverence doesn't work out, go for the gin and tonic, chill for a night, and get back into it full swing the next day.

Good luck to you!

Legen obviously you are attending the college from Hell.  Think how smart you'll be when you get out!  And, what is blackboard?

gin and tonics fluoresce purple in blacklight. - that gives my life new meaning and purpose.
If we want her to be exactly she'll never be exactly I know the only really real Buffy is really Buffy and she's gone' who?

Blackboard is an electronic course management system that was clearly spawned in the depths of hell. Its purported purpose is to allow us professor types to post lecture notes, administer electronic quizzes, manage discussion boards, email our students, and maintain a grade sheet that is visible to all students. It does do these things, but not without a long and difficult argument and much swearing.

You may also be interested to know that the filling of twinkies, due to the titanium dioxide particles added for whiteness, also tends to glow in blacklight. As does vaseline. The benefits of an engineering education are many and profound...

Blackboard - for once I'm feeling grateful to be old.    Hurrying out to get my blacklight and my Jimi Hendrix poster.
