Pretty much AU all the way, for obvious reasons. Starts in S4 at the beginning of "Goodbye, Iowa" then takes a quick turn to S1. Spike learns not only to be careful what you wish for, but also that when you swim in the Nile too long, you could drown. Written for the seven_seasons LJ community innagural season.

Summary: The battle's done and they've kinda won, so what now? After Chosen, Buffy hears a tale from Xander that alters her direction and they both are left with ghosts of all those "I'll never" moments now that never has occurred.

This story is written for the Writercon08 banner challenge. The artwork is made by the incredibly talented kazzy-cee. The year is 1943 and Spike and Dru have been captured by the British army and are about to be executed. But - there might be a way he can save them. He must fly to France and rescue the Slayer - a girl called Joy - from the Germans. And in 2001, Buffy is being given a challenge by Quentin Travers. Travel back in time to Germany to rescue a Slayer and kill a vampire.

This is a story in my What If...? series. What if Buffy had run faster at the end of Into the Woods and stopped Riley leaving? What would Spike have done to break them up?
