BSV Forum - General - The Bloodshedpub OPINIONS WANTED Oct 11 2007 06:34 am #1Guest Which fic can we safely say is a spuffy classic? Which fic is a must read that ur not a spuffy fan unless you've read it? Oct 11 2007 07:04 am #2Guest I'd say "Been Here Too Few Years" by Addie Logan if we are talking AUs. That's an epic. Oct 11 2007 07:29 am #3LadyYashka The Game Series by Sabershadowkat. Actually, I'd say anything by Sabershadowkat. Tomorrow may be hell, but today was a good writing day, and on the good writing days nothing else matters. — Neil Gaiman Oct 11 2007 07:36 am #4Scarlet Ibis Though it's not finished, "Cast Away" by RipeWickedPlum and "Bloody Soul" by Kallysten. But damn, are there so many kick ass fics out there... "Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly." https://www.facebook.com/FangirlNovel Oct 11 2007 07:38 am #5Guest i agree castaway was a classic sadly never finished...god i would kill for it to be finished Oct 11 2007 07:45 am #6Scarlet Ibis Ooh, and though it's fantasy "In the Dark with You" by Moxie. And "Heart Don't Lie" by Nauti. Brilliant, and is practically finished. "Superstar Revamped" by Kantayra. Okay, done now... "Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly." https://www.facebook.com/FangirlNovel Oct 11 2007 10:25 am #7Always_jbj One fic? Gah...I can't do ONE, but here are some that I think are absolute must reads for any Spuffy fan:- Journeys by Mary The Butterfly Effect & Future Imperfect by Cousinjean The Blood Series by Nan Dibble
Barb C's series: A Raising in the Sun, Necessary Evils and Parliament of Monsters Legions of True Hearts by Eurydice My Life Closed Twice by Anaross Aim from the heart Some will love and some will curse you, baby You can go to war But only if you have to Fanfic ~*~ Artwork ~*~ Live Journal I'd say anything by Eurydice. I totally fangirl her as an author. Once I found her site, I read through everything there all in a row....with little sleep, LOL. Moxie was a classic for the older days. Bitten's work was awesome, too. Oh! And Spikealicious' Spuffy stuff! What If I'm Not the Slayer? now updated with chapters 22 and 23. Journeys by Mary is my alltime classic. I always loved Ginmar too -- Tabula Obscura is brilliant, though unfinished Oct 11 2007 12:39 pm #10SpikesKatMac Journeys by Mary The Bittersweet Series by Herself Anything that Holly writes Anything that DreamsofSpike writes Eurydice is incredible A beautiful and ineffectual angel, beating in the void his luminous wings in vain - Matthew Arnold Oct 11 2007 05:05 pm #11FetchingMadScientist Lizerrbeathan's "Adieu, A Dew, I Do" is excellent! Here's the site where I found it: http://www.lizerrrbeathan.com/LizerrrbeathanFanfic.html "Never a fetching mad scientist about when you need one." -Spike Enigmaticblue, Holly, Cousinjean - oh, yes, I agree, they're brilliant! Personally, I'd add Helga von Nutwimple (you can find her on FF.net), my very favourite writer, who wrote some great stuff. Unfortunatelly, I don't think she finished any of her longer fics. Despite that, I'd count "As Romans Do" a classic. Oh, and Shadowlass's "Possession", too. "People," Geralt turned his head, "like to invent monsters and monstrosities. Then they seem less monstrous themselves. (...) They find it easier to live." ~ Andrzej Sapkowski, The Last Wish Oct 11 2007 09:00 pm #14Guest Two of the fics that got me hooked on Spuffy was Harbringers of Beatrice by Holly as well as Blood Bound and Trusting You by DreamsofSpike. So those three would be my all time classics. Holly - Harbingers of Beatrice and Sang et Ivoire Eurydice - Promise of Frost and By Rook or By Crook , Black Satin Voices , Charms of the Clarion Alsow read stuff by Kallysten and Kantayra and really everything by Eurydice and Moxie of course cant forget Moxie! and likely ill keep on remembering the greats and keep on editing this post A lot of the greats have been mentioned here already, but I have a few more to add to the list. One of my all time favorite Spuffy fics is by Kindred called Detour. She also did the fantastically written, insightful and erotic two-part series, No Vacany and Open All Night. A pretty classic Kantayra story is Double-Spiked, which features two Spike's - good and evil - and season 6 Buffy. Porny hijinks ensue! Europanya's Shards and A Dying Dream were also two incredible fics from a few years ago. Check out anything by Devil Piglet and Rabid, too. Some choice fics are The Sweet Spot and Still Life in Melon and Honey. Annapurna's unfinished, but brilliant WIP, Marking Time. *teary eyes* Oh, how I loved these. Oct 12 2007 01:36 am #17slaymesoftly There have been some wonderful fics suggested on here. There have also been some that make me scratch my head and go "huh?". Even allowing for differences in taste, I think when someone asks for classic fics to rec to non Spuffy addicts, there are certain things you need to look for. If you're looking for "classics", as in the fics that set the standard for Spuffy fan fic, then you've got to go with the oldies, but extremely goodies. To me, if someone says "classic", then I think of something that has been around long enough to stand the test of time, something that has been acknowledged for years as the gold standard for fan fic. I think most of these fics and/or authors have already been mentioned and all I can do is say "Amen!" If you're looking for stories that might cause someone to be interested enough to start reading more, then you want to go with stories that are very well-written, have consistent and good characterizations, and present the world of BtVS in a way that makes the reader want to learn more about it. Oddly enough, I would say that the fics that fit the "classics" mold, also fill that bill. I cannot imagine anyone reading Journeys, or the Blood Ties Series, or any of the many other amazing stories set in wonderfully realized Sunnydales and not wanting to know and read more about these characters. It is, however, probably safe to mention specific authors who are so consistently good that reading almost anything by them is likely to inspire a need to read more. Eurydice, Anaross, Mary, BarbC, (Nan Dibble, God rest her soul), CousinJean, Lizzerrbeathan - I could go on and on. These are the writers who set the standard for the rest of us. Granted, individual stories can vary in their power and appeal, but probably not enough to scare someone away. After all, one reader's favorite fic by a given author may well be someone else's least favorite, but they will still both think that author is awesome. :) I am not a minion of Evil... I am upper management. Oct 12 2007 02:07 am #18Immortal Beloved Okay, I'm just going to go by memory here: Journeys Series by Mary Spike's Will Be Done Series by TalesofSpike Bloody Soul Series by Kallysten There are ones listed here that I've heard a must-reads, and I have them on my to read list, but I haven't had the chance yet. There are more, but my dinner's ready! :-) Give me Spuffy, or give me death. Oct 12 2007 03:03 am #19Scarlet Ibis Where can I find Lizerbethan's work? I'm fairly certain I've never seen or read any of it... "Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly." https://www.facebook.com/FangirlNovel Oct 12 2007 03:52 am #22Scarlet Ibis thanks Enisy ;) "Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly." https://www.facebook.com/FangirlNovel Oct 12 2007 04:19 am #23Guest Classic Spuffy? I have to agree with most things listed already here. In fact, I could so see Eurydice's Black Satin Voices and Charms of the Clarion filmed on the show, if Mutant Enemy had the money to film in New Orleans or Scotland. More stories: Enemy Incognito by Wynn A Cricket in California by Elsa Frohman Dream Girls, Blue Horizons, Balancing the Scales, Haunted, and The Seventh Slayer by Kantayra (Anything else by her is pretty good too.) Darkest before Dawn by Nmissi Heart's Filthy Lesson and Serious Moonlight by Mustang Sally and Rivka T (I recommend you stop there. The next two get really wierd and gross) Green Card as well as Castaway by Ripe Wicked Plum Love is Blind by Avalon For the Dark by Sandra S. (So old I doubt you'll find it anywhere. It could be considered Proto-Spuffy since it was written after Season 2) In Heat by Nautibitz I keep thinking yes That is my favourite fic/Author then someone mentions another story or writer that has to go on my list. Herselfs "Bittersweets" series has to go on the list of classics. For the dark by Sanda S is available at Spike and Buffy Diaries for anyone interested. Oct 12 2007 09:25 am #25Scarlet Ibis Please link me to "For the Dark" if you can :P "Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly." https://www.facebook.com/FangirlNovel The ones I'd list as classics have all been mentioned! Journeys is responsible for setting me off on a frenzy of fanfic reading. But here are a few stories that haven't been mentioned that I find myself going back to. So they are classics to me! "Let Nothing You Dismay" by Constance, which I can't explain why I love without spoiling. "It's Got to be Perfect" by Speakers-to-Customers. Buffy wishes for a perfect Spike and gets what she deserves, literally. A bit of Buffy-bashing, but all nice and Spuffy. And funny. "Innocence Found" and "Reclamation" by Spike's Heart. Sweet. The first ten chapters of "Saving Grace" by Dreams of Spike were totally gripping, and the rest of the story unfolds nicely. My favorite of hers. Slaymesoftly's stuff is always fun, and I know that a lot of other great fics are escaping my brain at the moment. Sorry the link above should be for The Fall of Dark (not very good at the forum/linky things). :sigh: Oct 12 2007 09:00 pm #30Scarlet Ibis Thanks so much for the link ;) And, here's one more, cause ya know, I can't help myself... "When She Was Younger" by thewhispering- the first third is completely gripping as we see Buffy (in s4) with the mindset of 15 year old pre slaying Buffy. "Angels in the Rain" by Mrs. Muir totally tugged at my heart strings, which is hard to do. "Bring Me to Life" by Sweetie (I've only seen it at sinister-attraction) is an AH. Buffy is blind, and Spike is supposed to murder her...but of course, lots and lots of things happen (and not necessarily funny hijinks- very emotional fic) "Boomerang" by Shadowlass- one of the best shorts ever and "All Our Yesterdays" by Evenstar "Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly." https://www.facebook.com/FangirlNovel I have to agree that there are alot of great stories out there I got so many running through my head sometimes it is impossible to pick just one but the first stories I ever read were on www.the-sandlot.com and now I am here but my top five authors would have to be Ripewickedplum Nautibitz sabershadowkat jackofspikes and mary perk Oct 13 2007 05:01 pm #32Guest You guys have forgotten BloodshedBaby....She made me laugh and thats what hooked me on the series, and fanfic Oct 13 2007 08:34 pm #33Guest I've just gotta say thanks so much to all the people on here who mentioned my stories. You guys are incredible...I'm so...awed, to think that you think of my fics that highly. I have to say, to me a classic fic is a fic that's stood the test of time, making a lasting impression on the fandom as a whole, and I have to also say that for me, I tend to remember specific authors rather than their individual fics, when I think of the writers who've made such a tremendous impact on the fandom. For me, anything by Bloodshedbaby or Nautibitz, Herself, Eurydice...there are so many others, too, almost too many to name...and there are a lot of newer authors as well whose work i love...Constance, JackofSpikes, ClawofCat, Eowyn...again there are so many, this is just to name a few...I'd read pretty much anything by any of these writers :) *hugs* DoS Oct 13 2007 08:54 pm #34Guest Kim Adams Well, I have been reading for about 2 years and can't read as much as I want due to work and RL but I can't even begin to list all the authors that have inspired and kept the love for Spike, with anyone, alive...Jackofspikes, Dreamsofspike, Hollydb, Eurydice, Kantayra, to name a few my tired brain can conjure up since I just got off a long nursing shift.... I want so much to read stuff by Kallysten since I keep hearing about her so could someone provide a link? Pretty please? I also love Mary's Journeys and I adore the Origin's stories by Niamh, surprised she wasn't mentioned...that is awesome as well. What about Megan? She is amazing as well. I also love Bloodshedbaby's stories. I am so glad this thread came up so I can find new authors to go after and read...so kudos to the one who brought this up...I thank you! If I think of anymore...can I come back? lol You can read Kallysten's stuff here: http://fanfic.kallysten.net/menu.html. "People," Geralt turned his head, "like to invent monsters and monstrosities. Then they seem less monstrous themselves. (...) They find it easier to live." ~ Andrzej Sapkowski, The Last Wish Oct 14 2007 06:47 am #36Guest Kim Adams Thanks Cereza, I will bookmark that site and download stories in case they disappear...lol Do you know where to find Nan dibble stories as well? With the website or link? I have looked everywhere and maybe just missed it or something...again thanks so much... Oct 14 2007 10:16 am #37Always_jbj Nan's stories are on All About Spike http://www.allaboutspike.com/auth.html?au=247%20 Aim from the heart Some will love and some will curse you, baby You can go to war But only if you have to Fanfic ~*~ Artwork ~*~ Live Journal Oct 14 2007 12:51 pm #39Always_jbj Quite a few of Cousinjean's fics can still be found online, yes. I am still looking thru all my bookmarked sites and will come back here to see if anyone answered. More of my fave's are Slaymesoftly, Unbridled Brunette, The space between, and Mary Perk. I have an unbelievable amount of stuff on my hard drive from so many authors that I haven't been able to finish and this forum introduced me to even more marvelous ones. All of you so very nice, Thanks!
Oct 15 2007 05:34 am #42Scarlet Ibis You can find moxie fics at sinister-attraction.org ;) "Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly." https://www.facebook.com/FangirlNovel Oct 16 2007 02:27 am #43Guest As far as I know, Nmissi doesn't have her own fic page. You can find Darkest before Dawn here http://home.att.net/~lubakmetyk/crypt.htm#nmissi as well as on Fanfiction.net. Which surprised me, because I thought they forbade NC17 stuff. Be careful going into Sinister Attraction. The last time I entered the home page it loaded a trojan on my computer. I go in through the author index and avoid it, so far. Look for the Moxie stuff on http://www.sinister-attraction.org/authors/m2.htm You can get to any author by clicking on the letters on the index links. Classics! I know this one! Mr. Monkeybottoms' Spike Lips! Lips of Spike! and The Wacky Adventures of Spike and Buffybot. If you're into sexy comedy, Monkey is a must-read. Laure Alexander's Divine Madness (one of the first fanfics I ever read, and sort of a bar-raiser for its time). And bonus, it's been recently completed. (Nice to know I'm not the only one taking five years to finish things.) and finally, KJ Draft's Tooth and Nail. My favorite fill-in-the-blanks Smashed/Wrecked fic. Some seriously hot stuff. Oh, and hey, thanks for the mentions. It's nice to be remembered. :) ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ Start With A Slap by Sirena Wise Book One of the SLAP/BANG duet Adapted from the NautiBitz fanfic "Crave" Available now on Amazon & Kindle Unlimited sirenawise.com Sep 11 2011 06:30 pm #45no_promises A lot of the greats have been mentioned here already, but I have a few more to add to the list. Annapurna's fic Marking Time is finished - no longer a WIP *does happy dance* I found it on her Dreamwidth page. I'd have to say anything by Nautibitz... but the ones that stand out in my head are "In Heat" and "All Over It" A Slayer with family and friends. That sure as hell wasn’t in the brochure.
So many wonderful stories - they thing is with so many different personal likes - maybe some parameters need to be set for The Classics - elements that help define what your Classics List. ” Recent evolutionary models have demonstrated what politicians have long known: the best way to get people to collaborate and to think like a group is to identify an enemy and charge that “they” threaten “us.” Michael Tomasello is co-director of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology. So many wonderful stories - they thing is with so many different personal likes - maybe some parameters need to be set for The Classics - elements that help define what your Classics List. That's not a bad idea. Who has suggestions for criteria? Date of publication? Maybe fics written while the show was still airing? Or some other arbitrary length of time ago? A combination of age of fic and awards nommed or won? Unfortunately, there's no other way I can think of to know how many people have read and enjoyed a particular fic through the years. To me, a classic would be a story that has been read and enjoyed for years, that is one always mentioned when someone asks for recs in a particular season or genre, one that (no matter how old) still holds up upon rereading. Does anyone have any other ideas? There will always be something that is left out because it doesn't appeal to large readership (no matter how in love with it its fans may be), and there will always be one or two mentioned that some people are going to look at and go "that piece of crap?". LOL But based on the above titles, I'd say it should be possible to come up with a pretty good list that most readers can agree on. Even if you don't personally like a fic, it should be possible to agree that it deserves to be listed as a Classic if it meets all the criteria. I am not a minion of Evil... I am upper management. Why not start, just to get some organization, with works from writers who are no longer active - Isabel comes to mind right away. She is one of the early writers who was a read by many fans; popular but also very good writer. You could also have a category for Classic Novel Length works. Maybe you could also have a Classic List made up from recommends by other writers only - ” Recent evolutionary models have demonstrated what politicians have long known: the best way to get people to collaborate and to think like a group is to identify an enemy and charge that “they” threaten “us.” Michael Tomasello is co-director of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology. MsClawdia is no longer active, but her stories are consistently well-written, fun, and thought-provoking. Her stuff doesn't have a lot of explicit sex, which may have kept her from getting the reputation for excellence she deserves. She posted in a variety of places: LJ, here, TSR, and EF, but I think her LJ has the most complete collection of her work. Thanks for the recommend and info on MsClawdia - will read some of her work - ” Recent evolutionary models have demonstrated what politicians have long known: the best way to get people to collaborate and to think like a group is to identify an enemy and charge that “they” threaten “us.” Michael Tomasello is co-director of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology. Dreams & DeSotos by Bloodshedbaby is one of my all time favorites!! She's a creative genius. Another creative genius who has recently come back to us is Jack of Spikes. Love all her stories. When choosing between two evils, I always like to try the one I've never tried before. Sep 21 2011 03:52 am #53Always_jbj

Oct 05 2011 03:17 pm #55Nick Scarlett These are fics I've gone back to and re-read several times over the years, so I'd consider them to be classics. Many of you may have read most of these, but maybe there are one or two you've forgotten and might like to visit again. Pandora’s Boxer by speaker-to-customers After his trials, Spike goes back to Harsh Light of Day – A Spuffy Season 4. Don’t be surprised if you find Harmony to be the most sympathetic character in this one. http://www.speaker-to-customers.me.uk/buffyverse/pbindex.htm Walking After Midnight by Chelle Season 4. In an ironic twist, Buffy gets injured and ends up in a wheel chair. Spike gets bribed into taking care of her. http://www.bloodshedverse.com/stories.php?go=chapters&no=4066 Here is Now by Terri Botta This time he goes back to early Season 5 with a soul. Very realistic characterization of everyone, especially Buffy. http://www.fanfiction.net/s/936018/1/Here_Is_Gone Cast Me Not Away by Enigmaticblue Spike leaves in late Season 6 and Wesley never goes back to the Angel group. They become demon hunters together. Spike and Dawn become friends and later Buffy wants to see him again. http://www.freewebs.com/enigmaticblue/cmna.htm Don’t Stop the Dance by Xionin Pretty much follows Season 7, but has some key changes that improve upon it. http://www.nocturnal-light.net/fanfiction/story/256/Dont_Stop_the_Dance/all Enemy Incognito by Wynn Great plot. Would have made a great Season 7 of Buffy and Season 4 of Angel. http://www.fanfiction.net/s/882508/1/Enemy_Incognito Perfect World by Cousin Jean Spike accidentally wishes that the chip had been put in Buffy’s brain instead of his. Now he has to rescue a helpless Buffy from Adam and...himself. That chapter 8 is powerful and painful. http://www.allaboutspike.com/fic.html?id=96 Collateral Damage by Cindermom http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=cindergal&keyword=Collateral%20Damage&filter=all Come Undone by Lady Wenham http://www.nocturnal-light.net/fanfiction/story/134/Come_Undone These two are similar, but both great. Buffy pulls Spike out of the Hellmouth at the end of Chosen, but his soul is gone. Herself’s fics: My favorites are Spike’s Girl and A Terrible Thing. Spike’s depressed and bitter after NFA. Buffy tries to reach out to him in one of them. Surprisingly, it’s Giles and Xander who do in the other. Memory Box by Grave Tidings It’s like that Keanu Reeves movie, The Lake House, but Spuffy. http://www.bloodshedverse.com/stories.php?go=chapters&no=6162 Prayers to Broken Stone by Devil Piglet I’m one of those people who didn’t believe Buffy’s last second conversion in Chosen and think given their history, she’d need to do a lot to make me believe it. Here she does. http://www.allaboutspike.com/fic.html?id=824 Spike: Soul Survivor The best of the Buffy/Angel virtual season continuations (including Joss’s). I usually wouldn’t rec a permanent WIP, but I’ll make an exception here. Best B/S reconciliation? It’s here, in the episode “The Big Ten.” http://www.newsgarden.org/soulsurvivor/ss.shtml All My Heart This Night Rejoicing by Enigmaticblue Screw Jimmy Stewart & Rudolph, too. This is the best Christmas story. Might be my all-time favorite. http://www.freewebs.com/enigmaticblue/rejoice1.htm The Underground by Jypzrose Several years after Seeing Red, Buffy tracks down Spike to help her when she is forced to fight in a gladiator-style tournament to the death when Dawn is kidnapped. And he has no chip and no soul. There’s another really great story where Cordelia, while in a coma, passes the visions to Willow by kissing her in a dream, but she, being human can’t handle them. A ritual is done and somehow Spike gets the visions. It’s an Angel Season 5 with Willow as a cast member. Also, Dawn falls for Connor and Buffy shows up. Lots of twists involving Gunn & Lilah. It’s called Fortune Favors the Brave, and it’s by Shoshanna, but I can’t find it anymore. As a bonus, here are some non-Spuffy fics that I really love: Raison d’etre by Aeneas (Spaith) Post Season 6, Faith gets mutilated by Ethan Rayne. Spike saves her, but Ethan fools the Scoobies into thinking Spike did it. Great plot. Warning: Buffy’s a bitca for a while, but redeems herself. http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1252927/1/Raison_dEtre Ransomed, Healed, Restored, Forgiven by Anaross (Spaith) Great redemption story for Faith and Spike. Angel doesn’t come off too good, though. http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=anaross&keyword=Ransomed&filter=all As the Seeing Are Blind by Enigmaticblue (Spillow) After NFA, Spike goes to Buffy in Rome, but she shoots him down. Later, he meets Willow and they become close friends. Eventually, circumstances bring them together with the Scoobies again. What will happen when Buffy starts to have a change of heart? http://www.freewebs.com/enigmaticblue/blind.htm Ten Years After by Curious Wombat (Spawn) Ten years after Chosen, a grown-up Dawn tracks down Spike. http://www.speaker-to-customers.me.uk/wombatzone/cwfiction.htm Hope a few of these will be new to someone out there. I think that we really have to add Ariane to the list - last I know she was trying to update her old website - especially as she is now fighting against cancer, I hope to god that she is doing better. Just my opinion, but I'd like to see the list restricted to stories that are classics for one reason or another, rather than authors. There could be a separate list for authors who have consistently produced such good work that they deserve to be on a list of authors everyone should try. Perhaps authors who've placed more than one story on the Classic story list would be a good place to start that? No matter how you do it, without clear criteria, there will be quibbles. I've already seen some suggested that I wouldn't consider either "Classic" (standing the test of time) or sufficiently well-written to make such a list. Unless the criteria might include the reasons for the reccommendations - for instance, the writing may be flawed, but the idea behind it is unique and well-realized, and different enough to rate mention, or the plot is exciting and originial. Or alternatively, the story may be fairly ordinary, but the characterizations are so spot-on that it is enjoyable just to watch them in action; or the writing is so beautiful that it's worth reading the otherwise not so awesome story just for the lyrical writing. Stuff like that. It seems to me that we haven't actually come up with any lists yet - just a gradually growing longer thread in which people chime in with their own favorites authors or stories - which is nice, but not the same thing as identifying those that should be considered Classics. (Sorry for the mini-rant - feeling cranky today, apparently. :)) I am not a minion of Evil... I am upper management. | |||
