Why take Xander?

So I'm rewatching Lover's Walk, and I have to wonder, why did Spike take Xander too?  Obviously, we needed to get Willow and Xander in a near death kissy situation, but what would Spike have to gain from bringing Xander?  Spike was very drunk, and had to have carried knocked out Xander out of the school and keep tabs on Willow at the same time.  I suppose he could threaten Willow with Xander's well being, but she thought that Spike would kill them both regardless of the spell.  Spike might have been afraid that a left behind Xander would wake up and tell Buffy, but he could have tied him up or dumped him anywhere.

Xander was more leverage.  If he didn't have Xander to threaten to kill, then he'd have to torture Willow, presumably, to coerce her to do it.  It's easier to threaten to kill a loved one as opposed to just torturing Willow, so that she wouldn't be delirious from pain or blood loss, and not muck up the spell.

I agree and Spike was never really into torture, that was more Angelus.  He just makes threats, but I doubt he would have actually gone through with the whole bottle in face thing.  I don't think he really wanted to hurt Willow.

When I say, "I love you," it's not because I want you or because I can't have you. It has nothing to do with me. I love what you are, what you do, how you try. I've seen your kindness and your strength. I've seen the best and the worst of you, and I understand with perfect clarity exactly what you are. You're a hell of a woman. You're the one, Buffy.

Oh, totally agree Tammy--Spike's not into doing torture.  However, he isn't above hiring someone else to do it ;)  At least that one time...

Very true, but it was only Angel...lol!

Well, Spike's own reasoning is that Willow will try the spell and "if at first you don't succeed, I'll kill him [Xander] and you'll try again." Even though Willow assumed he would kill them both regardless, Spike actually says that he'll let them both go if Willow does the spell, so in his mind, it's pretty good motivation.

Yeah, I guess threatening Xander would give Willow more motivation.  Though scary-drunken-lovesick vampire would be quite a bit of motivation.  Still, I would have love to seen Spike getting them back to the factory.  I wonder if he walked or took his car....

If he did bring the car, I bet he made Willow drive them all back.  Oh, for the chance to see those missing moments between scene a and scene b.
