Can fic sites be created for free?

Nov 16 2006 07:37 pm   #1Guest

Broke writer, here, and I've been wondering about this for a while. I have a mix of Spuffy and Spike/OC fics, and it'd be nice to put them all in one place, instead of just scattered on sites that will accept those formats.

Any suggestions? Also - tech clueless, as far as coding, etc. goes...

You don't need to know anything about coding to build a website. There are plenty of programs that let you edit things on the graphic-side (You select colors and stuff, copy some text into the window, move the text around until you like how it looks, ...) and creates the code on it's own. MS FrontPage and DreamWeaver are the two that seem to be most popular. I can't give you more than the names myself, I prefere to play with the code. LOL

Maybe someone with expirience using FrontPage or DreamWeaver can tell you more?

As for free webspace, yahoo should at least be somewhat stable, but if you try googeling it, you should get tons of results. Your site will have to live with some adds somewhere, but while you're just getting started that's ok, I think. In most cases, even the add-free webspace with domain name and everything is availible to a decent price ($2.99 at 1and1.com for example). So if you play with the free one for a while, and want something more, ...

My site is hosted on yahoo, www.geocities.com it's free and like Dia said you don't need to know coding or anything. I'm just now learning HTML and all that goodd stuff, and I'm using OpenOffice. It's free too. Also there's www.freewebs.com which I used for my sims story site, but you only get  pages free, after that you have to pay. Again, this is why I'm using yahoo for my Spuffy stuff, it's free, lol. If your not into fancy stuff, you can just post over at Live Journal.

ROFL at Dia whose idea of "easy" is Dreamweaver"   I would suggest an LJ account which is free, or the yahoo Geocities, which doesn't give you a lot of flexibility (not if you have a Mac or dial-up) but is extremely easy to use and does it all for you.

Although, now that I think about it, I do pay for my domain name and my site - but I added some extras that probably aren't necessary.  I think there are probably a lot of free options if all you want is to archive your fics somewhere.  You can work your way into making fancier web pages and adding images and stuff when you get more comfortable with it.

I made my first site on a free Geocities account... it has a range of 'site building' programs you can use... or you can make the site in Front Page or Dream Weaver and upload it... you DO get ads... but I found if you list no interests when joining you don't get as many LOL
