You know those WIPs that haven't been updated in gosh-how-long? Well, the 2-year distraction was...

I just finished my first original novel!!! Second Chances, posted complete here: http://community.livejournal.com/ktaylorfiction/  Membership required.

Now comes the proofing and editing process, and sending out queries and crossing my fingers for publishing, but in the meantime, I'll be reading those WIPs and finishing up my fanfics. Look for updates this spring.

Just an ignorant question, CM - is a publisher going to be interested in something that's already been posted on line? Even if it is to a closed community?  I'm just curious. Feel free to tell me to MYOB. :)

Depends on the publisher....
If it was out there in full-access public, then yeah, you need to take it down before they'll put the book out. But I'm not going to say upfront that the unedited version is on a locked LJ. ;)  If it ends up for sale, I'll take the story off the comm.

A lot of it has to do with who's retaining the rights at the time. Some publishers lock you in to being exclusive with them until a certain time period is up. Those are the ones that get very adamant that the book is nowhere else, for free or otherwise. Some hold the rights to print versions, but not e- versions. Really just have to read the fine print.

For the most part these days, if you want to be read by a print publication, you have to get an agent first, because they only look at agent-submitted work. Agents vary in what they want sent to them with your query, to consider taking you on as a client.
