The Vampire Diaries

Sep 13 2009 11:27 pm   #1LisFayte
Did anyone watch The Vampire Diaries? I watched and it kinda reminded me of a supernatural Dawson's Creek or 90210. I will give it another chance, because you can't judge a new show on just the first episode, but if it doesn't improve, I won't be watching long.

I watched because I can't seem to pass on anything having to do with vampires, and I enjoyed the books, even though I don't remember much about them.  I guess I kind of liked it, but it'll take much more before I'm completely hooked.
When I say, "I love you," it's not because I want you or because I can't have you. It has nothing to do with me. I love what you are, what you do, how you try. I've seen your kindness and your strength. I've seen the best and the worst of you, and I understand with perfect clarity exactly what you are. You're a hell of a woman. You're the one, Buffy.

I hell, I missed it - Hope it had a good premiere audience and hope that it is successful - every success means other genre projects have a better chance for production.  Hope it is online for watching.

Does anyone watch "Being Human"  on BBC America?  I enjoyed it, was hoping for more dramatic and dark story - it actually was about very serious themes of how one fits and lives in human society.  I sure hope they get another season.

Being Human is very good and has secured an eight part second season from the BBC to be shown next year.

The Vampire Diaries had pretty good ratings for the premiere.  As for Being Human, I decided against watching that one.  I have to draw the line somewhere, and it really didn't appeal to me.

Ugh this show was a bit of a yawn to me.  Being Human is alright but actually more watchable than this teenie bopper show.  Sorry I can watch teen shows, but this one I am actually shocked with K.W. on the lack of originality.  God what the heck is happening to Hollywood?  I have one heck of a vivid imagination like everyone on fan fic sites, but that show?  Oh I shudder.  Not only did they change the face of the books (I'm kinda peeved about this) to now show Nina, Paul, and Ian on the cover - they twisted a lot of the book.  The ring is just like the damn Gem of Amarra.  There was no history behind it so far...just something in the 'family'.
The acting (and yeah I'm no critic or actress, but I have eyeballs and opinions lol) was bad.  I only liked surprisingly Jeremy the brother who didn't exist in the books.  Ian was over acting it was annoying.  I felt like I was watching Dawson's Creek without the 'mature' speak, Buffy without the Slayer, and Lis I do agree about 90210...I also felt I was watching a teen version of True Blood and with the hype of Twilight being out massive amounts of trying to one up each other.  And the kicker?

These books came first.  I know only one episode and I was seriously bored and trying to watch it, but I have a feeling Flashforward is gonna out beat Vampire Diaries for me.  Probably catch it here and there, but religiously follow it?  Uh no.  As far as the ratings go?  So many of CW's shows have high ratings for anticipated shows and then they die.  My guess CW is grasping here...Better be careful because if 'vampires' keep remaining the 'in' thing, which they will, CW is in for a rude awakening when a hit series comes out besides True Blood.

Am I mistaken or is the CW on it's last leg?  I could have sworn I heard it was in major jeapordy of getting the axe because it still produced low numbers.

IMO this show will last as long as The Mountain did or as long as Reaper did or even Priveledged (and this show I loved).  I expected better from Kevin Williamson and I love his work....Shakes head sadly.

Gonna try once more, but it isn't like Buffy or even my other fave shows, in how I couldn't wait til the next episode...

This will appeal more to the younger crowd...To some but definitely not all.

Being Human - what I've seen of it so far - is quite good.  Haven't had any urge to catch Vampire Diaries.

I watched Vampire Diaries and actually enjoyed it.  It wasn't the best show in the world, but I am very patient with a new show, because most of the shows I ended up loving were ones that I thought were a little blah in the beginning.  I've never read the books, so I don't care about what things they changed.  I can enjoy it for what it is.  I like teen shows.  Sometimes they are more intelligent and have more conflict and actual story than adult shows.  Only time will tell about this one.  I'm interested in the set up from the first episode, even if it's all been done before.  There is nothing new.  The trick is to do it better, brighter or bigger than before.  And Ian S. is very easy to look at, plus he plays evil.  I'm shallow.  It's enough for me.  LOL.

I thought Being Human was great.  Loved the actors and the premise.  I'm really looking forward to the new season.  I usually like vampires best and I usually really like the bad boys the best, but George, the werewolf, is my favorite on the show.  The actor does a great job with the whole bundle of nerves personality.

After a while, I started being very tired of Annie but I'm back in her camp - and especially with the new arc that should be coming for her and the new powers.  Mitchell, I also like very much and the theme of vampires being able to control the blood lust is also intriguing.  I like the comparision to Spike and the chip theme, but with Mitchell, it would be a true struggle and excellent metaphor for man controlling his animal primal instincts.  One of the reason that I love Spuffy and Spike fiction when he is able to control his blool lust without the chip and a soul.  George, how can you not like him, he is like young wonderful loving little brother, or the wonderful super intelligent geek that can steal the hearts of any intelligent woman - I also loved him in the new BBC "Little Dorrit" production.

Had a chance to watch the finale again on Comcast On Demand today -

Dawn - I totally get what you're saying here.  I really tried, but I swear I wanted to gag.  I love teen shows too.  Like 90210 and oddly since I missed the first episode Melrose.  I wasn't much of a fan of Melrose fan, but I did watch it just not as faithfully as other teen type shows.

I'm sure ultimately it has the 'appeal' to grow more, but there are a lot of fans of the books who are in quite an upset with whom they have cast.  Ian no doubt is easy on the eyes as is Paul, but the personalities and the 'aura' of these characters are so far from the books characters its really a big turn off to most.  I watched it on the premise that this 'lead' actress would at least be alluring.  She wasn't.  She was not Elena at all.  Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter back when she was younger) would play Elena better than Nina did.  Elena was not and will never be broody.  I wanted to cry because they twisted this girl into a 'Buffified broodier than normal girl'  Yeah on some level Buffy was a brooder.  Elena is the epitome of Cordelia and the Cordette's.  Stefan is very much like Angel...Sir broods-a-lot.  Except Stefan did have more personality.  I just found that he pops up and he's there in front of Elena.  The storyline was a bit lacking.  The drug problem Jeremy has was believable because how many go down that road when losing people or parents they love?  Ian...what can I say he is a younger Spike?  He definitely oozes Spikeness.  However, he wasn't that aggressive in the books.  I think I am having issues cuz these books way back when were awesome and the first vampire/supernatural writer I had ever read.  I had wished, and hoped, that they would turn one of LJ Smith's books into a show...They never did...until now

I know some are upset about True Blood and have somewhat got over it.  I never read those books and I love that show.  I think with knowing a series it tends to blind some.  However I read A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks and I loved both.  I read quite a few of Nicholas Sparks books and loved all the movies and the books.

I know this series is based loosely on the books...I get that.  I just really really...uh did I say really?  Well, I really dislike this actress as the lead.  She bores me to tears!  In fact anything my daughter has put on that has her in it - I'm in fact sleeping because I don't sense any acting...Notice how some really put the effort into it?  This one I don't see it.  Maybe it's just me, I just really don't like this girl as the lead.  Caroline outshone her...God even Bonnie did (And this actress was nothing like Bonnie in the books - who is red headed pixie type girl shy and more like Willow?).  This Bonnie is so different but it worked.  I'm not feeling Elena/Nina at all.

When does the new season start for Being Human?  I haven't finished watching the episodes from the previous season, lol.  Been burning too many discs lol.

And Dawn I'm trying really hard to like this show considering it's  a vampire show...I just don't see it in the cards unless this girl really kicks up her acting or I just try to squint real hard and overlook her?  *Bangs head repeatedly, lol*  I'm trying though!  Though I still think Flashforward will have my eye more...

I don't think she was that bad, but everyone seems to be more fixated on the fact they didn't make her a blonde.  I loved the books as a kid, but it was a long time ago and I hardly remember any of it, which probably helps when watching the show.  I only know that I didn't like Damon, and I don't see me liking him in the show, either, although I do like Ian.  I get more of an Edward vibe with Stefan than Angel.  I do like teen shows, but sometimes they annoy the hell out of me, like 90210.  I wasn't really a fan of the original, only watching like one or two seasons of it.  Melrose Place I've never seen before, but I gave the new show a chance and so far, it's not bad.  True Blood I do wish was more like the books, character wise, anyway.  I started watching the show first, came into the books kind of late, but that finale was so disappointing.  It's still my favorite show right now.  But back to Vampire Diaries, if you don't like the show, then you don't like it, you can't force yourself.  If one more episode doesn't hook you, then I just wouldn't bother with it.  I'm not even close to being hooked yet, if ever.  I have no intention to watch Flash Forward, I'm watching way too much as it is.  I have to draw the line somewhere.

I know when I saw this season, I actually groaned and said...uh movie channels.  Yeah movie channels.  Watch a movie stick to what you know.

Geez even my fave tv show right now One Tree Hill did a major make over too.  But I like it's make over.  I just sadly wish people had more means to get their own idea's out there with the money.  Some people have dreams but get shot down.  I know my co-worker and friend does AMAZING impersonations was shot down.  It's a cruel world.

Ok maybe I need to tone down the not liking the actress a bit lol...I've watched her in other things and I'm just not seeing what could be 'alluring' about her.  Elena is suppose to 'allure' both vampires.  Well, that is the idea.  The whole premise of the show.  It has nothing to do with her hair.  Actually if they could have gotten say oh Demi Lovato I think that would have been cool.  Oh I so need to stay away from my daughters movies and shows, lol!

I'm actually watching Flashforward cuz kinda like the idea it's kinda like Sliders I think.  Have to see it first to judge it.  But I'm more drooling cuz Shakespeare's in Love star Joseph Fiennes is in it...Yum.

Just like I'm gonna give NCIS: Los Angeles a chance cuz of LL Cool...Man I love that hunk of ohkay...I'm stopping now.  As far as VD goes...Ian is hot and I wasn't keen on the brother thing at first...Elena had a 4 year old sister.  I actually liked the idea of a brother.  It worked.  Loved his storyline actually.  Typical yes.  Believable yes.  I will watch it from time to time, but religiously like say Buffy or One Tree Hill and now Fringe...uh not really.

I wish some creative minds like hint hint some you would read would get noticed...Then start developing different and fresh ideas lol...Think that's why I turned to movies for awhile lol.  TV was getting too reality ridiculous and predictable.  Then again I was also preoccupied with fan fiction too lol.

I love One Tree Hill, although I'm saddened that two of my favorite characters left.  I think the show should have ended after last season, but I love it too much to see it end, even though I know it can't last forever.  I'm also hooked on Fringe, but I watch Bones, so Flash Forward is out.  I'm trying to avoid having three things on at the same time, if I can.
Sep 16 2009 09:51 pm   #14BandS
I know the feeling...It's like the best choice of chocolate or which Spike you prefer...or I could go on lol.

I never got into Bones.  I tried.  Same with Lost...I was literally lost, lol.  I was sad for awhile that Chad and Hilary left, but they had a good run.  There are sooo many rumors flying why they left.  Some say because they weren't asked when actually it was what they wanted.  They just didn't renew their contracts.  Mark left it like that because, yes, just in case, it had that air of finality.

I have a feeling this 'new' One Tree Hill is gonna be lots and lots of nekkidness!!!  I was laughing so hard when both Mouth and Skillz were nekkid!  Then saying I love you while Millie watched on...OMG hilarious.  Hope they were well paid for doing that.  I was really ticked when Craig was given the boot and then finally Moira.  It sucked but we moved on.  However, taking Chad and Hilary was like wtf???  Then you hear their reasonings and you're like ok, but why?  And then you're ok, but you need to be there...And then it's acceptance.  I'm at that point.  I really had at it with the group of us OTH fans and we complained until it was like 'It's not going to change'  They moved on so should we.  It's different now, but I'm loving the up close on Brooke, and Haley.  They have more screen time!  More Haley than Brooke.  I love her but wow has she changed.  She's not so vindictive anymore.  Guess that beating beat it out of her?  Who knows.  I'm definitely giving it a chance.  But I'm going out on a limb here and thinking maybe last season or quite possibly one more?  Hmmm I wonder.

My daughter is funny when I watch OTH she runs to her room now and says 'uh-oh, mommy in her own world now.'  LOL.

Overall this season I'm thinking I will watch what I can, my life doesn't revolve so much around tv..thank god for online episodes and repeats and dvr's!!!!  So glad someone else lurves OTH!!!!!  So I'm thinking I might give VD a try online or if my dvr cooperates (darn thing) or catch it on I think it's getting a repeat night...hmmm need to check that...but if not Being Human comes back soon then True Blood...lol

I went into watching The Vampire Diaries without having read the books, so I wasn't going in with any preconcieved expectations, unlike when I watched the first Buffy episode. I will admit that I was a little dissappointed in Buffy at first, but I quckly got over that. Buffy's quirky humor and likable characters more than made up for the lack of flying vampires :D
The problem I have with TVD is there is no humor, the characters aren't very likable, and the storyline so far has been very boring, everyone seems to be feeling very sorry for themselves. Like I said, I will give it a few more episodes, but if it keeps up this way, I don't know if i will watch very long.
Being Human, on the other hand caught my attention from the first episode, the humor was there, the characters were likable, and Mitchel was the hottest vampire since Spike, I can't wait til the next season (series).
As far as I'm concerned, the CW only has one show worth watching at the moment (Supernatural) they cancelled Reaper, a show I really liked, and have added too many reality shows. The only good thing to come about the cancellation of Reaper is that Ray Wise will now be playing on Dollhouse.
I have read all of the Sookie Stackhouse books, but I still like True Blood, it is fun watching it and NOT knowing what is going to happen, I think Alan Ball is doing a good job with it.

I just want me a piece of Eric, guh, Spike has some competition...lol!  I'm currently working on a Buffy/True Blood crossover right now.

I liked Reaper as well, they always cancel the good stuff.  It'll be interesting to see him on Dollhouse.

OTH, yeah, I agree with pretty much everything, Mouth and Skills cracked me up.  I'm glad to see that everyone else has come back, for the most part.  I don't believe for one second that Nathan cheated on Haley, what a load of crap.  I'm just glad someone else likes the show as much as I do...lol!

I watched the first fifteen minutes of the Vampire Diaries with a friend- just because of the vampires. And honestly, I wanted to gag the entire time. Like several people have said, it's nothing like Buffy. The acting was awful, and just like Twilight the whole "Vampires can walk in daylight and still go to high school even though they're really, really old" is a huge turnoff. Honestly, what vampire wants to go to high school? lol.
At the moment we don't have cable. :-( I only watched the Vampire Diaries because I was at a friend's house, and I haven't seen either True Blood or Being Human, though they both sound interesting.
Also, I feel like one of the few people to whom the flying vampires from the original Buffy had no appeal. :-) The entire movie was entirely cheesy, to be honest, though I understand it wasn't at all Joss Whedon's fault.

I think the vampire only come out at night is over  - the current vamps on film and tv can now be out in daylight.  Mitchell from "Being Human" also is able to live in the daylight.

Passing on this show and it's vampires to boot.  It has that air of Blood Ties to me and that show I just couldn't get into either.  I put aside the 'love' feeling for the book to watch this show...I couldn't watch it.  I uh fell asleep.  Then caught the last 10 minutes and I so wanted to scream at the tv.  Damon/Ian hot, but the love thing going between Elena and Stefan can we say wth is up with the rushing??????  I will pass on this show cuz I am so very excited about Flashforward.  At least last night wasn't a total blow...I woke up and in time for Fringe...LOVED it!
Sep 18 2009 07:22 pm   #22Tammy
I loved Blood Ties, still think it should have been given a bigger chance.  I won't give up on this show just yet.  I loved Elena and Stefan being together in the books, but that was also before everything else.  I think that was the first human/vampire relationship I've ever read.  I do agree that it seems a bit rushed, though.  Fringe is made of awesome, of course, but that ending made me want to cry.
Sep 18 2009 09:58 pm   #23BandS
I don't know, I loved the whole forever triangle thing...In the book she went well with both vamps imo.  She seemed to have to separate kinds of personalities to accomodate both it seemed.  Like Damon brought out her wickedly wild side yet she somehow calmed him down even though he still had that wild side to him.  Whereas Stefan was (in the books) mildly mellow and somewhat afraid to be near Elena?  Was it me or did he really try to avoid her at all costs in the book at first?  I get the whole Catherine/Elena similarities.

My reasons for comparing Elena/Buffy to Stefan/Angel...well they are in some ways.  Both were quintessential popular girls who needed to be knocked down a noch or two by becoming more humble.  Stefan/Angel yeah they both had the broodiness except Stefan has a bit more zeal to him whereas Angelus had that zeal and not so much Angel.  That was the one spot where I really think the writers of Buffy messed up by giving Angel/us two types of personalities and Spike didn't so much have this issue...But that is another topic altogether.

I noticed one thing with these new vamp shows...Not one seems to focus on the aspect of the soul.  Good thing or bad thing?  I actually like the fact vamps are seen as bloodsuckers and well just vampires.  Damon acts evil and yet Stefan does not or tries hard not to.  Hmmm rings Twilighty to me with the pushing down that urge to feed off humans.  Great concept just not well thought out when people really dive into the nitty gritty of details.

I never sat well with the aspect of a soul...Because then I would really feel bad about eating say mr. turkey come Thanksgiving day.  Though they are birds one would wonder if they 'feel' things too.  Oh god now I'm really nit picking lol...Hope I'm not talking myself into being a vegetarian lol.  Anywho...Fringe was awesome!!!!  The ending though not so much a shocker to me gave me pause for concern...Is he being shoved off the show or will we see more of him and his 'bad self' now...Don't want to say much if people watch it but do you know what I mean Tammy?  Interested to know about that...Cuz I have heard some rumors about that actor and I am none to pleased...He works really well with this series.

Funny how some topics just end up intertwining with Buffy lol!!!  Back to work...yeah almost done...
Sep 19 2009 02:14 am   #24Tammy
Yeah, I hear you, it's not really the actor for me, I just love Charlie.  I would hate to see him go.  I find that I compare everything to Buffy these days.
