BSV Forum - Writing - Beta

Looking for a beta ...

May 29 2010 02:08 pm   #1ghostyouknow27
I don't know if anyone still looks here, but I thought I'd try ...

I took a break from my post-apocalyptic Spuffy fic, so, of course, when I went back, I realized just how rough it is, and now I can't continue writing until I'm happy with what's already there. :-)

My biggest problems are skipping over my typos many, many times, and mistyping periods and commas, especially surrounding dialogue. I can also use the same word like six times on one page, which I never notice until I re-read. I also tend to write, delete half of what I've written, reorder the paragraphs, and then continue writing, so it's important to make sure that everything flows.

I'm fine with plotting, but since (in this fic in particular) I deal with dream sequences, amnesia and characters seeing the same thing different ways, I could use someone telling me if things get too confusing. It's a Buffyverse/Dollhouse crossover, but I just borrow the Dollhouse universe (no characters), and it might actually be helpful to have someone unfamiliar with Dollhouse, so I won't confuse readers who haven't seen the latter show.

It's rated PG-15. There's some violence, but I'm not planning any sex scenes.

That all sounds pretty scary, but I promise I'm not that bad. :-) I write and edit for a living, and will happily trade beta work. Please e-mail or PM if you're interested.

Thanks!

Did you try the beta list on this site?  Have a look there to see who is currently accepting new writers and send them a message.

I have, and I have not heard back. I'm not sure how current it is, or if betas prefer to work with people with whom they are already somewhat familiar. I've only recently rejoined the fandom.

ETA - but I have not attempted to contact everyone on the list yet. Might be my next step.

I think what we're learning about beta lists is that no matter what we do, or how often we try to get a new one up, they become obsolete almost immediately.  People put their names on, but they rarely go back to remove them if/when they don't want to take on anyone else.  All we can do is nag every once in while to remind people that it's there and that it would be nice if it stayed current. *feels forum entry to that effect coming on...*

Maybe it would be helpful to put a "last updated" date on the beta list entries? I've looked at quite a few beta lists/beta forums, and seeing dates is helpful, if only so I don't contact someone who last offered to beta in 2002! I know this list is newer than that. Just a thought. :-)

Sorry about that. I accidentally registered two names here, and logged in under the wrong one.

Hee!  Something to think about. I'll take a look at it and see if we can fit that in without having to ask Dia to redo the form for it. Thanks for the suggestion. :)

Ghost - instead of just looking for a beta, you might try to find a couple of other writers to have a group with.
If we want her to be exactly she'll never be exactly I know the only really real Buffy is really Buffy and she's gone' who?

Spikez_tart - Are there places to look for that kind of thing? I think I would really like that actually, since I love editing, writing, and discussing editing and writing. I just don't know too many people, since I've been out of fandom so long that I'm basically a noob.

Ghost - you could post a request for group members on your LJ, on Riters_R_Us, and on the forum here. Those are my three suggestion. You could also check Yahoo Groups to see if there are any on there seeking new members.

Ghost - Slayme responded and forum here might be just the thing if you want fellow Spuffy lovers. I'd limit the group to three members.  That seems to work out well.

Hee. I guess I'll start a new thread about putting together a small writer's group ...
