Rereading favorites

Jul 25 2013 09:37 am   #1Traydora
I have what may be a very stupid question.  I have a few stories on my favorites list that I would like to reread at some point.  Would someone explain to me how I can do that?  I can't seem to find any way to reread them once I've favorited them.  Thanks!!

Hi Traydora,
I hadn't even noticed there was such a thing on our site. LOL But in checking my own account, I see that there is something called "manage favortites" which in my case, seems to take me to a huge number of stories - most of which I'm very sure I haven't even read. LOL

I'm not sure how it works, but there seem to be separate sections for stories (by title) and author, with the option to add or remove whichever ones you want.  If you've manually added stories you want to favortie, they should show up on that page.  I'll play with it some more today and see if I can figure out exactly how it works. It looks to me like, in my case, every story on the site is on there in alphabetical order, but I have no idea why. Whether it has something to do with my being a mod, or whether everything goes on there until you remove it (which seems silly) or if you have to look at the list and add the ones you want to favorite - I don't know. But I'll try to find out and come back and give you a better answer. :)

ETA: Okay, as far as the list on "manage favorites" goes, it looks like you just click on the story you want and click "add". The the story is moved over to the empty (in my case) text box right beside the box holding all the stories.  Ditto for favorite authors - highlight (click) the name and click "add" to transfer the name over to the text box listing your favorite authors.  If that's what you did to "favorite" them, then your stories should be all visible in that box.  If you just left a review, I suspect that's where the longer list of fics comes from. Just guessing, here, but I'll bet when you leave a review, the story goes onto that list in the lefthand text box and you have to manually add it to the box containing your actual favorites.

If you did something else, please let me know what procedure you used so I can look into it.

You can do a search for them. Favoriting a story means that you get an email notice when it's updated. You can also favorite an author and any time they add a new story you get an email. To reread a favorited story really has nothing to do with the favorite list. Just search for the story and click on it.

Yeah, I added stories to my "favorites."  I just wanted to know how I could go back and reread them WITHOUT having to search for them again.  I kinda figured that was the whole point of having favorites.  That's how it is on other sites, I just assumed it would be the same here.  lol

LOL Nope. Wasn't a mod when the site was set up, so don't know exactly what it was about. Until you asked, I didn't even know we had a "favorites" function. :) It confuses me when I see that something of mine has been "favorited" on FF.net. I finally decided it must be the same as the "like" button of FB or the "kudos" on AO3. :) I'm a little surprised that you can't click on the title of your favortied fics in that box and be linked to the story though. It does seem as if that would be the point, doesn't it?  I don't know how much attention Dia is paying to the site right now, but I think she checks periodically for problems. You might make an entry on the "things you'd like to see" thread in the forum and see if she picks up on it.

ETA just checked to be sure that wasn't the case. It isn't, but since you can see the titles of your favorties in that box, you don't really need to "search" for them, just go to that author's list or to the "stories by title list" and click on the title.  Say you want to find "Love's Lost", go to the "L" titles and scroll down to click on it. Or go to my page and scroll down to click on the title.  Off the top of my head, I don't know if you can put the title into the "search" function, but if you can, then that should take you right to it also.  Sorry there are so many extra clicks.  Maybe we can get that adjusted one of these days. :)

I've asked about making the favorites clickable link to the story but I haven't gotten a reply yet. You can search by title, author or a general search. But occasionally the general search doesn't work very well when you enter a title. It would be faster and more convenient if you could click on a story in favorites and go right to it.

It definitely would be. But that's the kind of major change in the site's script that only the person who programmed it originally can do. :) All we can do is hope Dia sees the requests and thinks it would be a cool/easy/fun thing to do.  It my experience, she is often working on changes, but waits until she has as many as she can finished and ready to go before implementing them. So, she may be sitting on several changes but is not ready to make them live yet. I don't know.

I'm going to start my own list - as for the easy access - simple enough to list the title and the description and a link on your personal favs listing.

so much for my best laid plans - looks like there is no way to make a private note to self which would be a way to make a personal favs list - would it be very difficult to add a "personal notes" to the account tools?
