Whole Story option for WIPs?

Aug 12 2013 04:50 pm   #1Katt
Hi I was just wondering if there is a way to look at a non chaptered version of non-completeed stories? I tend to read offline and having 10million chapter tabs to read one story is frustrating. FFnet does that too(altho they have NO whole/complete story option) which is why I probably miss a lot over there cause I tend to avoid it for that reason. BSV though is all Spike/Buffy and good to greatest writers, and the option is there once the story is complete, so I don't mind as much, but still hehe...

Thanks

That would be pretty handy especially for those very long wip stories.

That's another one of those questions for our resident programmer. I'll see if I can get Dia's attention .

I too would like this...  (I also read off line and it's one feature that I really miss from the other site I go to - tthfanfic).  Also, sometimes, even when I'm online, the connection is 'iffy' and I'm not always guaranteed the ability to load the next chapter.  Much nicer to know i have the whole thing.

I also would like a 'review' box at the end of the 'whole story' - this would increase the chance it would be reviewed, regardless of if it is finished.  I think it would increase the number of reviews of finished stories especially. I always hit the back button, then load the last chapter to leave a review, but I'm sure a lot of people don't.

Good point about the reviews for completed fics - at least I guess that's what you're saying? If it's a wip, then the review for the latest chapter would be the same thing as one for the whole fic, wouldn't it?  I've got a note in to Dia about several things that people have asked about, but have not had a response yet.  Maybe I'll try email and see what happens.  At least I can prod her to take a look at the forum entries so she can see what's being requested.

Yes, I mean reviews as an option regardless of what format you're reading in.  Most times I don't start following stories when they're first posted, so I only use chapter-by-chapter reading when stories are updated.  Otherwise, I load 'whole story'.

(on TtH, i load whole story for WIPs as well as finished stories, and you can review any chapter whether it's finished or not b/c the interface allows you to select which chapter to review whenever you go to reviews, which is available at the end of the last page loaded even when the story is unfinished)

Like one person above, I don't read much at the Pit (fanfiction.net) and the inability to load 'whole story' is one MAJOR reason (sometimes I use flagfic, but I keep losing the URL for it, so I only bother when I really want to read somethingt here).  Here, I tend to try to read finished stories, but i'm still following dozens of stories.

One other feature that would be handy is a way to tell what chapters you've read of a subscribed story when you're logged in...  when you read as fast as I do, and as much as I do, you end up tracking lots of stories in progress (despite trying not to) and then you end up losing the bubble on some of them b/c they're updated 3, 4 or more times before you have time to go back to them... by which time, if you don't have a way to know what the last chapter you read, you (me) end up -
a) rereading the whole thing
b) just saying 'forget it' {most frequent option when a story isn't updated really fast}.
c) deciding not to try to figure it out until the story's complete, then promising to go back to it and start near the beginning...  which often turns to (b)

Much more helpful would be to know if you're on chapter 9 or 19.

Btw, you should know (b/c it may seem like lots of whining and complaining).  I've been known to suggest features from BSV to the mods at TtH... Of all the fic sites on the web, you two do things the best and I spend more time with you both than with anything else, even (don't tell anyone) regular books!  I have actually discovered other sites with stories I like and having been spoiled by both of you, & not bothered b/c the interface is too much of a pain in the butt.

You guys rock.

The only reason I'm bothering to 'suggest' improvements is that I love it here and spend so much time here already.

Thank you so much.

Thanks for the kind words, Blue. Most of the credit goes to Dia, although we have taken suggestions from time to time.  Haven't heard from her in a while, though, so not sure anything new is going to get implemented.  Might - she tends to store stuff up and then make a lot of updates all at the same time. But I'd be more confident of that if I'd actually talked to her recently. :)
