BSV Forum - General - Conventions

FANGORIA

Jun 20 2007 01:24 am   #1Immortal Beloved

So, I'll be attending my very first con next week in New Jersey.  Never thought I'd ever be such a fan of anything that I'd haul my behind to a convention like some love-sick Trekky.  But, never say never 'cause that's exactly what I'm doing :D  Of course, it doesn't hurt that those cheekbones are going to be there.  All I have to do now is try not to pass out in front of them :-P

So, who else is going next week!  I'd love to put some faces to names.  Hop on the tag below or e-mail me!

I'm going IB - will be staying at the host hotel starting Friday evening, but spending most of Sat. on Long Island, I imagine as my roomie has tickets to both the afternoon and evening concerts.  Sunday will do photo op and Q & A and then head home.  Look for me!

Hee! And I know exactly how you feel - that's what I said when I went to Sacramento ("Okay, I'm going to try this once cause I want to see him in person - but that will be it!").  However, the really cool thing about these events is that you get to meet in person all those people you've become acquainted with on line and some of them will become even closer friends and that would be one of my primary motivations this time.  See people I know, get another close-up with the cheekbones, and have a good time.  I've never been to a big con that involved anything other than Buffyverse stuff, so this will be new for me too.

Coolness, Slayme :D

Oh, I forgot to add that I'll only be there on Sunday.  I'm doing photo, autograph, and Q&A.  Oh, and since I have no idea what people look like, if people e-mail me--and you aren't a psychopath--I'll send you a picture so that you can recognize me.

Give me Spuffy, or give me death.
Jun 20 2007 03:37 am   #4slaymesoftly

ROFL - well, I think the question of whether or not I'm a psychopath is probably up for grabs.  Depends on who you ask. LOL - Sunday is when we'll be there too. Not doing the autograph, though. I already have one of those and I don't want to be fighting Sunday night beach traffic getting home.

I'm hoping we'll have name tags at the con - but who knows. It might be too big for that.

Yay I'll be there and I'm so excited!

I seriously doubt you'll get name tags. You'll get some kind of badge so you get let in, but there is rarely anything personalized. Just take some sticky labels and make your own. That's what I did for the last con I went to.

I so wanted to go to this, but everything in RL has been fighting me. I'm going to have to go for DragonCon, instead.

I'm not the kind of person to go to cons, but seeing James in person is very temptig. Too bad he'll never come anywhere near where I live (Netherlands).

Yay!  I'll be there, too!  If anyone is interested in meeting up, let me know and I'll send you a facebook link or a pic for recognition.  I'll also be at the early concert on Saturday; possibly the later one as well, I'm going up with friends, no telling how crazy the grrls will get!

Now you tell me!!

Saturday on LI sounds like fun. First time visiting NY (longer than passing through at any rate), so I can play tourist for a day. Heck, we can do that Friday night too... I've still gotta do the mapquest thing on how to get there. Hoping I arrive early enough that we can do dinner or some such. ^_^

One week from today! Woot!!

Woot! indeed!  We should have plenty of time for dinner Friday. And then we'll have a bit of Saturday before we have to head out to LI. Probably not enough time to do much sightseeing in the city, though.  I'd be happy to show you around Staten Island, though....ROFL Okay, maybe not...I'll be there's stuff to see on LI or even in Jersey.

Or, we could spend the whole morning trying to decide what to wear when. LOL

ROFL! I've already started trying to decide what to wear. I'm fairly convinced I need to go shopping.

Ditto, E.  I've been thinking about what to wear since I bought my tickets :D

Hee!  I've posted my two con reports on my LJ (as has Spike's Kat - who took notes and has more stuff in hers), but for those without LJ's I thought I'd put a tiny bit up here.

We got there (separately, but pulled into the parking lot at exactly the same time. lol) early enough on Friday to get into our "meet James" clothes on and get in line for pics.  Of course, he was feeling chatty and fun, so just before he got to us the PtB began to nag him to go faster (long line outside - have no idea what possessed them to allow only 1/2 hour for pics). So, "Hi, good to see you again" grab hand, twirl me around, take cuddly picture and "bye and thank you". *sobs* Then we went through the interesting (ask me how) vendors and then in to Q and A, which was shortened considerably by James' being upstairs taking pics until 6:30. Dinner and beer in the bar and then up to our room to be on line until we fell asleep.

Next day we went out to LI early, located the Crazy Donkey and then just killed time until lunch with Sevvy, Claw of Cat, Lost Boy and two others with different fic interests.  Sat outside drinking and chatting throughout the first concert - hugs all around when Amyb, Uisge Beatha, Beanbeans, CopyKween got there.  Off to dinner with the lunch crowd plus the new arrivals and their significant others.  Back to CD for the second show, which we did watch -albeit from the back of the club.  James looks good (in case there was any doubt. lol) and he seemed to be having a good time. With Sunday's James stuff not happening until late in the day, and having already got our face time on Friday, we decided to eat a nice breakfast and then head home before the traffic could get bad.  Good plan, I was home by 1:00.  Don't have my picture yet, because I would have had to hang around until 11:30 when the Fangoria stuff opened again. So, I'll get that in a month or so.

As always with these things, the room was full of people who looked vaguely familiar, people I was sure I knew, people I probably would have liked to know except I didn't know who they were, and totally strangers with the same taste in men. ROFL.  If we were supposed to meet and I never found you, I apologize.  I know Eowyn was there (eventually, poor thing), but only saw her for a few secs. Ditto for Immortal Beloved. Never saw (to my knowledge) any of the other people who had talked about going.  *waves at everybody*

Thanks for the recap, slaymesoftly. Glad I got to meet you guys... and be very thankful you showed up *after* I'd had a drink 'cause, man, I needed it! My friends and I ended up pretty close to the front during the show (though, sadly, not close enough to be one of the girls he was talking to the whole time... what was up with that?), so we didn't see much of anyone, since y'all were hanging out in the back. I did catch up with ClawofCat and lostboy afterwards, and I introduced them to my friends. As predicted, they thought Cat "seemed nice and normal" and LB was "a little creepy," lol. Then, we ran off in search of food, since we hadn't eaten a real meal all day, but didn't want bar food.

I posted about the concert in the Spike on Top thread, so you can check out the rest of my thoughts there.

Um, hey... I'm standing right here.

Besides, I defy any straight, 30 year-old man to stand in a room full of TV vampire fangirls and NOT seem kinda creepy.

Jul 03 2007 04:22 am   #17slaymesoftly

ROFL at Eowyn and LostBoy - I was just going to say that if they met after the show, he really wasn't at his best... LOL

And, yes, I know you're standing right here - I think you were one of the few men there who had not been dragged to the concert by his wife or significant other. So, go you for being willing to be surrounded by a room full of besotted women drooling over another man.  :)

Nah, we met before the second show.  She was a little standoffish though.  I remember philly girls being friendlier...  I'll give her the benefit of the doubt and blame it on the omg-skyrocketing murder rate.

And yeah, I got wasted.  It's a little coping mechanism I have for being stuck out in L.I. with strangers who may or may not secretly hate my guts.  Go figure!

Jul 03 2007 04:47 am   #19slaymesoftly

Did we act like we hated you?  Paranoid much? LOL

Wait... *I* was standoffish? Slaymesoftly was there for that conversation (before the second show), so I think she can judge for herself... though I'd tend to blame any unfriendliness on my recent traumatic experience.

My friends didn't get introduced until after the second show, at which point, LB, you were quite drunk... which doesn't make the best first impression.

Sorry, E.  I didn't realize I was trying out for Gentleman of the Year.  I rather thought I was at a (sorta) rock concert on a Saturday night.  If it helps, I apologize for puking all over your friends' shoes and calling their mothers nasty names.  That was really out of line.

Jul 03 2007 09:02 am   #22Guest

They actually had to move the autograph session up to 2pm Sunday, and the Q&A got cut a little short because they were afraid James would miss his flight to England, with the new security measures from the high alert status going into place. He's filming in Wales this month, so I imagine he had to be on set right quick if he had to take a flight that soon.

There's never enough James time, though. Those couple of minutes go SO fast! Thanks.

Note: Thought this was a bit long for a post on the forum, but I never used my LJ account, and the only people who might read it are on the BSV, so forgive my verbosity, but here it is:

So, sadly, I did not meet any of you at the con on Sunday :-(  I still wish that I could have gone to the concert on Saturday, but alas and alack, RL got in the motherf***ing way :grr:  Sound's like you guys had fun, barring puking and traumatic traffic.  But I digress…

I did get to see James on Sunday!  I arrived a bit late in the day as my friend whom I was meeting got stuck in traffic for a few hours.  Said tardiness caused me to miss my autograph that was moved to earlier in the day without my knowledge, but I'm not bitter :-P  I stood in line for my picture, and I was a bit anxious, but okay, until the girl in front of me starting talking about how nervous that she was.  Then I started to get nervous.  I don't get nervous easily, but it ain't pretty when I do.  You see, I have a tendency to vomit when I get really nervous, so I tried to breathe and not think about it.

I entered the room where James was taking pictures, and they had one of those big white umbrella thingies that photographers use blocking your view until you were up for your picture.  But the bodyguard was kinda cute and made for a nice pre-show.  The nervous girl ahead of me went to take her picture.  James laughed in that maniacal chuckle of his, and I just about peed my pants.

Then, it was my turn.  I stepped past the umbrella thingy, looked up, and there he was in all of his small and compact, yet well-muscled glory.  He said, "Hi," and the first words out of my mouth were, "I think I'm gonna throw up!"  He let out a big laugh and motioned me over.  Then came the hug.  When he stepped back out of the hug, this is how it went—and I swear, on all that is holy, I am NOT making this up—James said, "You look gorgeous."  He made this sort of deep, baritony, rumbly noise deep in his chest, said, "Yeeeaaaah," while nodding his head, wrapped his arms around me, and leaned his head against mine for the picture.  I was so dumbfounded that he thought that I looked pretty that I was rendered speechless.  And that is no easy feat, just ask my husband :-P

After the picture, we went downstairs for the Q&A session.  We had to suffer through some other guy's interview and a trailer so long that they may as well have shown us the entire movie.  Then James came on stage.  I went and stood in line at one of the microphones.  Everybody was asking these really in-depth questions about politics and careers and the like.  One girl did ask him about his kids, and when he answered, he got the look on his face.  You know the one I'm talking about ladies—that awestruck love look that we saw at the bottom of the stairs in "The Gift" and in "Bargaining II," the one he had on his face when Spike told Buffy that she was one hell of a woman—and I almost died.  See, my father was pretty craptacular, and for a man to be in awe of his children…Well, THAT'S pretty damned sexy :-)

 Then came my turn:

James: What's up?

Me: I don't have an important question like everyone else.

(James and audience chuckle)

Me: I just wanted to come up here and talk to you.

(James and audience burst out laughing)

James: That's the bravest thing you could say.

Me: Just thought I'd give your brain a break.  So…Dog person or cat person?

James: That's a good question.  I'd have to say cat person.

He went on to talk about his cat, Zachary (who names their cat Zachary?) who died.  I told him that my cat died earlier this year.  Then I started to get teary, so I told him that I had to go sit down.

So, if I didn't see you, but you saw me, I was the girl in the black and white who asked James if he was a cat person or a dog person.  I'm a cat person, too :-)

That's pretty much it for my James experience.  I'm still on a pretty man high.  I'm not at all sure what I expected, but I found him a bit humble, surprising intelligent (not that I thought he'd be dim, but how often do you find a guy who looks like that AND is smart :-D ), sweet, kinda geeky (in a good way), a bit on the short side for a guy (but I'm kinda tall for a girl), cute in a cuddly sort of way, charming (but not in smarmy way) and really freaking, stomach-churningly, weak-in-the-knees, ga-ga-faced, drool-worthily beautiful :-) I will have to see him again the next chance that I get.

Give me Spuffy, or give me death.
Jul 04 2007 03:47 am   #25Guest

Aww that was you who asked that question?  That was so cute!  I asked the question right after you.  LOL

Jul 04 2007 04:21 am   #26Eowyn315

*sigh* IB, I'm jealous. That's such an awesome experience. As fun as the concert was, it doesn't compare to one-on-one time. I want a JM cuddle! The way you were telling the story, I was sure it was gonna end with "and then I threw up on James" - which, I'm glad it didn't, but at least he'd definitely remember you, lol.

Sweet of you to give him a break with the easy question... though I'm really hoping someone has a transcript of the Q&A, because I wanna hear him talk about politics. :) I'm such a political junkie, so James + politics = mini-O.

Hey all. I attended the JM concert on Saturday, as well. Most of the experience has been pretty thoroughly covered by others, but if anyone is interested in pictures, here's a few of mine featuring some of the lovely ladies (and guys) of the BSV.

It was great meeting all of you this weekend!

Thanks for the pics. You all are so cute and pretty!

What an account, IB!!! He really is the most sweet and genuine guy.....I about died when he complemented me on the QM.

The Fuzzyshark board is getting transcripts. Helcat put up one for Friday. It's not word for word, of course, but the subjects are there. If she was there on Sunday, she'll get one up for that, too.

Hello, ladies (and Lost Boy)!  Speaking of Fangoria and Crazy Donkey pics, I'm going to make a post once I get back home to the land of the cable internets  *pets broadband*.

Does anyone object to me posting picsI took of those of you who were at either event?  I don't want to be one of those obnoxious paparazzi-types  lol.

Let me know, folks!
