James and TV/movies

Jul 31 2007 06:30 pm   #1slaymesoftly

I think there was a convo on the tag last night after I went to bed about James and his work prospects.  There has also been some LJ discussion today due to the tiny amount of screen time that he got last night on Saving Grace.

James is a theater actor - spent the first 20 yrs of his life (give or take) "getting his artistic rocks off" (in his own words).  Once he had a son to take care of (and now his neice, too) he decided that he'd been poor long enough and he headed for Hollywood.  I would imagine his stints on Northern Exposure and Millenium helped there - gave him some names to use and so forth.

He has said many times that he came to TV/movies for the money. He doesn't want to die poor.  He also has referred to himself as "a character actor, who, with enough powder and paint, can be made to look pretty", so I don't think he is as interested in being a leading man (very difficult at his age, I would think) as he is in permanent employment. He wants another series and the steady paycheck that goes with it.

I can see him in an ensemble type of show - maybe a cop show, or some other drama.  I can also see him in a dramady or a flat-out comedy as he does funny very well.  I sincerely hope that he gets something fairly soon - although, I suppose if he does enough guest roles on a steady basis that he can make a living that way, too.  I think he would prefer the long-term security of a permanent role, though. That's what he has said repeatedly.

On another, exciting note, did anyone else see mention that Johnny Depp has been signed to play Barnabas in a movie version of Dark Shadows? I think I saw that on someone's LJ.  Awesome!

I'd love to see him in about anything, as long as he was on screen for longer than five minutes.

I'd personally would love to see him on Law & Order SVU or Nip/Tuck.  I just want to see him do drama (or a dramedy).  Maybe like, Boston Legal or something.

Slayme, you mentioned JM's son, which I knew about, but why does he have his niece to take care of too?  Do you mean in a "wanting to make sure she has everything she wants/needs" way, or is he raising her?

Yeah, he mentioned his niece at the last con.  Talked about her cheerleading squad and how they won their championship and how he was so proud of her.

God, he's so freakin' cute! :-)

While I wish all the Whedonverse actors the very best with their careers, I feel very bad that James Marsters,  one of the very best actors in both series has found such  little screen time or good projects since the ending of the buffyverse & Angel.  So much success for SMG, MT, AH, DB, ED, JB, AHS and so little for JM - what a pity.  I wish so much that James Marsters could get a really good project to work on, something that would open up opportunities for good and steady work.    He is perfect for a great dramatic series - I hope that his Torchwood guest episode will bring him more screen time -  So many of the minor characters from The Buffyverse are having very hard time finding work - and they were all wonderful in their parts and excellent actors -

Aug 01 2007 03:16 am   #8pfeifferpack

Since TV has a habit of recycling older stuff I've always thought James would be wonderful in a new version of the old series It Takes A Thief (Robert Wagner was in the original with Fred Astaire playing his father...imagine James with Robert Wagner as HIS father).  I think he could pull it off wonderfully and it would likely do well.

I hope he gets lots of work and I agree that his priorities are the paycheck issues at this point in time.  I don't blame him.  I think he feeds the need fr immediate response (that theater perk) with his music sideline.

The sad part is that he is so very talented it's a shame that is wasted!  He seems to be getting all the villain, bad guy roles and that means the idiots missed his hotness potential for romantic leads (Yes, he could still do them...Hollywood is nicer to the men, just look at Sean Connery and Harrison Ford!  James is still much younger than they are younger than Pierce Brosnan too and they are getting romantic lead roles with young women as co-stars.  A woman of his age would be out of work until she was old enough to play the mom roles.

The man has gifted me with a character brought to life that has touched my life personally and who will always be a part of me for it.  I want him to be able to make a decent living in his field and support his family nicely.  The part of me that appreciates his unique talent wishes he could just do it with good roles that get noticed.

BTW....Johnny Depp as Barnabus = me squeeing everywhere!  I watched EVERY episode of Dark Shadows as a kid/adolescent and that is where I first became a lover of vampire lore (although much as I liked Maggie/Josette I dearly loved Angelique in spite of her evil tendencies).  Since I adore Johnny Depp (and he's an admitted fan of DS), I can't wait!  It can not be oher than excellent.

Well, he's in a movie thats coming out called PS - I love you. It has Hillary Swank and Gerard Butler! It also has Lisa Kudrow and James' char has the same last name as Gina Gershon's so either they're playing a couple or family or something.

Someone on the msg boards on IMDB that James doesn't have a HUGE part but there are great scenes of him, especially a couple with Gerard Butler. (Yummy combination, yeah?)

Wait- ED, JB?  Who's initials are those?

And, though I heard the book "PS I Love You" was dumb as hell, I think with the cast they have for the film, perhaps it can come together.  And James said though his role was small, it was meaty- and I hope that it's enough to garner him the attention he so rightfully deserves in Hollywood.  George Clooney and Brad Pitt are in his age range, and the only difference is he's just a bit shorter.  I see no reason why he can't lead.

Just as long as it's no stupid romantic comedy with Kate Hudson or J Lo, he should be fine :D

Yes, James began taking care of his niece several years ago.  His brother has drug problems or something and he couldn't care for her.  He always talks about his "kids", but I'm pretty sure that Sullivan lives with his mom in Modesto, so I'm not sure how much day-to-day care James gives him.  I'm sure there are those who do know, though. :)

I think PS, I Love You will be a big help if it's any good, and if his part isn't whittled down to nothing *cough, Saving Grace, cough*.  But, his fan base is a niche market.  Not always easy to transfer to the real world. He needs a good role that allows him to show his range, then maybe he can snare a bigger movie role.

But, like I said, he pretty much just wants that steady paycheck - and if he can get it doing something he loves, so much the better.

While I definitely agree it's a shame we don't see JM in more roles, he HAS mentioned several times (at cons, etc) that he's turned down roles so he could stay closer to his kids and not uproot them, etc.

So until he gets over that hurdle, it's likely we'll only see him in guest spots.   That being said, geez, can't they be BETTER spots?  How about an ep of CSI or something?  LOL

Aug 01 2007 07:36 am   #16LadyYashka

JM turned down the lead role on the series The Dresden Files because he didn't want to move to Toronto, and away from his family. This decision just made everyone (the author of the books included) love him even more. The guy in my avatar (Paul Blackthorne) is the one who got the role when JM turned it down.

Yes, his son lives with the mother, and James is up there every other weekend, barring work conflicts. He took over custody for his niece in early 2004. He has a live-in nanny to help with that.

I love, too, that family comes first for him. How many men can truly say that and put it to practice?

Yes, the SG episode aired last night, and was slightly over 2 minutes long. The series isn't getting great reviews, though, so it's probably good he wasn't on there longer.

Torchwood has a lot of people excited. James was there filming for 3 weeks, and might be back in Oct. It's a big guest role.

PS, I Love You comes out at Christmastime. The script is changed from the book, and the movie seemed to get decent enough feedback from early test screenings. Like any supporting actor, James is hoping his scenes aren't cut too much.

He did the voicework for "Superman:Doomsday", which comes out on DVD in Sept. It's getting good reviews. He plays a chilling Lex.

I would love, love, love to see him on a major network again. I think it's been long enough now post-Angel that he's not going to be held back by the Spike assumptions anymore, and he'll be able to play anything. He really wanted to take the human roles for a while, since all he was getting were rock stars, vampires, and druggies......all the bad boy stuff because they were still stuck on the bleached hair look. I think he's been out there long enough as "James" that 2008 will be a good casting year....but that's just me.  :D  We'll see what happens with the next pilot season.

Awww, but we love bad boy James *pets* LoL

The funny thing is, though, I think there are some A-list type actors that ARE type-cast but they obviously do fine at it... but still it makes it even more chilling when they step outside their comfort zone... well that or just odd and fun to watch, lol

Okay, now I feel even more in love with the incredible guy, since he's raising his niece like that. I too have a sibling with a drug problem, though it's my sister, and am because of that raising her daughter and son...though they're considerably younger :P

awwwww....that just makes my heart melt inside....

a whole new side of james...and love it!!!

See! I knew someone *cough, CM, cough* would know the whole skinny. I do remember James commenting somewhere about having turned down the Dresden files because of the distance from his kids and not wanting to uproot them. Good on him.   Makes those of us who pushed so hard to get him the part look kinda silly, though.... (is biting tongue that wants to say something very cynical)

Yeah, I think he's long enough past Spike that he can  expect to be given serious consideration for other roles.  Someone at the con did ask him about playing some other vampire (I forget who), and he allowed as how he thought it had been long enough since he did Spike that he could afford to do another vampire without being type-cast.

Cara Mio: WHERE do you GET your information?!?  :-)

When I was at the con, the girl in front of me asked him to tell the best moment of awe with his kids (see cheerleading competition up top), and he was like, "How do you pick just one?" and he got the look (see "The Gift, " "Afterlife," etc.) on his face, and I actually went "Aaaaaaawwwwwww".  I don't aww--ever (save for kittens).

It's so nice to hear a man make his kids a priority.  I'm not saying that there aren't men out there who do, but it touches me personally 'cause my father was...not wonderful.  He always put himself ahead of everybody else, and I cried many a time wishing that he would just think about me for a change.  James says he doesn't want to move too far away from his children; my father lived 10 mins. away from me, and I was lucky if I saw him every other month. :-P  But I digress...

My point: His dedication to his kids is almost as sexy as that bottom lip :-D

As for being type cast, it happens unfortunately.  He'll always be remembered as Spike.  It's easier to disassociate the other actors from their BtVS characters because we saw them do stuff pre-BtVS or we knew that they were acting.  With Mr. Marsters, he was Spike.  He was acting, but you could never tell; Spike was alive on our TV screens.  James gave him so much depth, so many layers.  He made us laugh, he made us cry, he made us think.   Actually, just watching him play Spike is almost like seeing many characters all wrapped up into one.  Anybody paying attention could tell: James's performance in the church in "Beneath You" has Hamlet written all over it :-)

As for movie and TV roles, I don't care what or where or how.  My JM motto is "I'd watch him watch paint dry."  But if I have to put in my vote, I support TV or movies.  It would be nice to see him in a series 'cause that would mean a weekly fix :-)  Personally, I love theatre, but if James stays in one spot, I'm going to have to uproot my family to see him on stage :-P

Give me Spuffy, or give me death.
Aug 02 2007 01:22 am   #22Scarlet Ibis

Ok, it's kinda like "duh" that he's Mr. Wonderful.  Were you guys under a rock? Lol.

If he did do theatre (in Chicago), I wouldn't mind that... Nope, not at all.  I'd be at every opening curtain... Ok, not really, but I'd make a helluva effort.

He's capable of doing any kind of role really, so I'm hoping to see him regularly or on big, movie like things in '08 as well.

Good point, IB. He did embody Spike completely - and the character had so much change in his life that James got to really show what he could do. I think he said somewhere, when asked about Spike, "Joss gave me this character and let me shine"  or words to that effect.

I've been a James-phile since last 2001, and started lurking on the James boards in 2002, joining morethanspike.com in '03. One of the mods there, Bookworm54 created a database of every comment James has made publicly and sorted them into topics, and I've read it all. What can i say? :)  I got curious, and started looking at everything I could find......and he's been endeared to me ever since. Been collecting con and gig reports for quite a while now....

Slayme - They asked him about playing Thomas in the Dresden Files, who's Harry's vampire half-brother.

James playing Thomas? That fits. The author of the books is a huge fan and I swear that he's based Thomas on Spike. Plus Thomas has a girlfriend he adores who happens to be nuts. (No, she's not based on Drusilla!) ;-)

Yashka got to talking to me last night about the Dresden series and now I'm thinking I might look it up... who's the author again? I just liked how some of his quotes were so Anita-ish, hehe, such as both have said something along the lines of "It's not paranoia if there's really something out to get you" lol

Jim Butcher. James Marsters does the audio book narration for books 1-4. (And more, hopefully) They took some artistic license with the TV show, in case you're wondering.

Thank you and never seen the show, I don't have scifi (not that I couldn't get it online I guess like I do my japanese shows) And apparently my roommate has read some of it at least since she put in her two sense when I mentioned Dresden. So that's another vote for maybe reading it since we have similar tastes in books.

I just have to see how much they cost since I don't make a lot of money or maybe the library will have them. *nods* Though first I have the last HP book and the recent Anita books to get caught up on.... been so bad lately.

The library should have the books at least, if not the audio versions. The older paperbacks are $7, I think. They're around 300 page books.

James has apparently (according to the spuffy realm) joined the cast of dr who spin off torchwood- series one has already aired in the uk, and is about to in usa. apparently hes in season 2, which starts here (UK) soon!! although im not an avid follower of torchwood (altho i do like dr who, as david tennant is THE SEX), im deffo gonna start watching it now.

Spikes_wish - sorta half off topic, but I've been looking at this show recently that I'm concidering getting... its a UK show that they started showing on BBC America, but I don't get cable here at my house. I only get to see satellite at my parents, hehe, where I used to watch the Tribe and stuff. Anywho, I saw a show called Hex which looked interesting - have you seen it? People on reviews keep comparing it to Buffy but others say no (though those ones usually bash Buffy so I'm not likely to want to take their word if they do that, obviously, lol) They also say the American DVDs are edited to be slightly less mature *gags at American censorship*

Hex im afraid was cancelled, and it was aired in a very VERY wierd way. I think season one was 6 eps and season two 13eps.

It was like they had a very very hard time to keep funding this. The interest dipped a lot and it Lost and gained plot too often. I recently watched Hex all over again and the confusion lies in how bad the writers were. They suddenly just changed the entire storyline in desperate bid to keep the series going, which ultimatly failed.

Hex is like a misguided attempt at making something like Buffy/Charmed into one series, if the writers wernt incompetent and keept the sotry together im sure the viewers wouldnt have faild the show and it would still be with us. The show fails in a big way in comparisment to what we are used to.

I LOVE brit shows, id highly recommend Sea of Souls or Jekyll. Hex might be a show to download just for he heck of i, since its not all that long and you wont loose a lot of time on it haha. Anyways brit shows as a standard usually offers something more then hollywood gloss which i appreciate highly. But Hex just cant seem to deliver, i think they were all just very stoned at that point for some reason they couldnt make it work. It would have been easier if it was a BBC project cose they fund their own.

On how people compare the show to Buffy, is simply because you can easily tell by s2 how desperate they are to fill that kind of slot for that kind of fanbase, with Hex. people who have the gull to actually in all honesty compare the two are people mostly "taking the piss" and ridiculing Buffy.

Thank you Jo, that was a big help and explains why the DVD seemed weird to me with the odd epi-ness, hehe. I looked at it and was like, "They didn't give the whole first season?" :P

I like foreign shows, too. Usually Japanese sentai and toku, haven't picked up a new anime in awhile - my faves are all a bit dated now *sigh*, and then British stuff like The Tribe and their sister show, Atlantis High... and I looooove Are You Being Served when I see it on PBS! (Yes, I have oddball tastes, but I'm okay with that. ^.^ ) There were a few other passing brit shows I saw once in awhile on cable such as this robin hood-ish one and another medieval one that had a tribe star or two. Even if I wouldn't let my kids watch "mature" material, I still don't care for how certain things such as "gay" people get edited out for the American version *cough sailor moon cough* hehe

But yes, now I think I'll try to see if there's any torrents of it anywhere or anything just for a laugh, like when me and my roomie rent really small budget (sometimes foreign) oddball movies :)  (Omg, has anyone seen the french film Bloody Mallory? *shudder*) I had found a torrent of Chance to download (yummy James goodness!) but there's constantly people waiting with half-downloaded files and no one hosting. I got Cool Money, but haven't watched it yet.

Did Shadow Puppets go straight to DVD? I didn't think I saw it the last time I went to Movie Gallery, but that was about a month ago.

hahaha i caught Cool Money on either scifi or challenge/comedycentral the other month!!!! its alright actually, i mean not huge production but the storyline aint that bad! and + for original Lois Lane in it too hahahah!!

Oh yeah HEX has loads of gayness!!

One of my all time fav Animes is Trinity Blood!! Vampaja sucka-di bluud of other Vampaja!!! it rocks!!

Therse this american show called Vampire High that is pretty uber low budget and pretty sucky but i enjoy it immensly!

A movie to NEVER WATCH BloodRayne http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0383222/ omg what utter crap they messed it up so brilliantly, i mean they had ALL the actors to make a superb movie! well maybe u shuld just to see the worst movie of all time!! therse this one movie i enjoyed its Australian and called Undead 2003 cool stuff http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0339840/

Aug 04 2007 02:11 am   #38Blood Faerie

Yeah, my roomie rented Blood Rayne but I didn't watch it after hearing her rant about it, hehe  And my fave animes are actually the magical girl ones *blush* Sailor Moon, Wedding Peach... also like Blue Seed, Inu Yasha, Fushigi Yuugi.... saw a bit of Tonde Buurin and Mermaid Melody... maybe the reason I haven't picked up a new one in awhile is I really haven't seen any new magical girl series in awhile.

For Hex, the reviews mostly said stuff like the nudity and other adult-ish parts were edited down. I can see them doing that for TV but they should've left the DVD alone.

Yes, Shadow Puppets was direct to DVD. It just came out last week.

Blood Rayne was funny if you approached it as a non-serious vampire movie. We didn't expect anything out of it, and had a good time.

Thank you, Guest. I'll have to swing by Movie Gallery again and check it out. Here's to hoping they have it, considering they'll have random Hong Kong movies that I'll rent but they don't have other stuff like Buffy, Angel, Mutant X... etc. They only carry shows I really don't watch (but they're the uuber popular stuff that no one shuts up about, I'm just weird like that.)
