Tara's Family

Aug 08 2007 02:13 pm   #1Blood Faerie

Okay, so hadn't saw the ep with Tara's family before today, so only now wondering this and it might've been explained before. I was just wondering why she doesn't have an accent like the rest of her family. She's only been away from them about a year according to what they say... so the accent wouldn't suddenly go *poof*

PS - Spike's so cute in this ep with the doing nice stuff all gruffly, lol, but eep at the creepy petting of the doll head :P

She probably was closer to her mother, who speaks Tara's accent and they don't spend much time with her father and his side of the family. Complete fanwank.

I don't know... but she clearly spent time with her family- the fear and uncertainy we see ever since they show up.  Especially Donny- he clearly abused her in some shape or form (probably beat her- don't know about sexualy abuse).  Her cousin, whatever her name was, didn't have an accent, if I recall correctly.

She seemed like she had a bit of one to me, the cousin. But yeah, after seeing that episode finally I was like - what?? hehe

One reason might be she's deliberately "lost" the accent, as a way to distance herself from both her family and the bad memories of them.  Probably like Angel "lost" his accent, as a way to distance himself from Angelus.  Spike, being proud of who he was, would have kept his accent, seeing it as part of his identity.

I'd go with that, as well - not only because she wanted to distance herself, but also as a way of blending in. Tara's a pretty shy girl who doesn't like to draw attention to herself, and an obvious southern accent would make her stand out at a university in California. I can see her trying to lose the accent so that she wouldn't seem different from her classmates.

Spike, being proud of who he was, would have kept his accent, seeing it as part of his identity.

His accent was fake, though... so, while it was part of his identity, it wasn't really being proud of who he was, lol. Just like Angelus and possibly Tara "lost" their accents, Spike "lost" his, too... but instead of adopting a generic American accent like them, Spike adopted a North London accent.

the creepy petting of the doll head  heh heh - our Spike likes to play with dolls.

Losing your accent - I moved north from Kentucky 50 years ago (yeah - scary) and have been living in Chicago since 1968.  I still have enough accent that total strangers pick up on it.  Not so easy to lose, even if you want to.

If we want her to be exactly she'll never be exactly I know the only really real Buffy is really Buffy and she's gone' who?

True, but Spike was NEVER proud of being William; he did everything he could to bury William, so he'd never be seen again.  He couldn't hide William's sensitivity, or his heart, or even his poetry - to Spike's everlasting shame -  but, he could adopt the name, the persona, and the accent of a much tougher person, hiding the aspects of William that he was most ashamed of.  So in that aspect, his reasoning would be that of Angel and, perhaps, Tara.  By hiding their heritage (i.e. accent), they hid the part or parts of themselves that most shamed, hurt or embarrassed them.  In Tara's case, her memories of abuse (whether sexual, physical, or emotional/mental - personally, I feel she was probably a victim of all three); in Angel's, his persistent insistence that Angel and Angelus are two separate people; by changing his way of talking, he would further distance himself from his "bad" persona; and in Spike's case, changing accents would distance him from William.

The only difference I see between the three characters is that, while Spike was ashamed of his past as William, he was never truly ashamed of his past as Spike.  Even after he got the soul, when he was dealing with his guilt, you never got the sense that he was ashamed of his actions.  He felt bad about them, and he took responsibility for them (unlike Angel/Angelus), but I never got the sense that he was truly ashamed of who he was.  He seemed to accept the fact that as a vampire, he was simply following his nature.  If Spike ever showed shame for anything, it was for falling in love with Buffy in the first place, something that went completely against his nature as a vampire.

And now that I've gone off on a totally different tangent, I'm shutting up!

Yeah, my mom is from North Dakota and Idaho, and had that whole fargo-ish accent. It's not bad now but it's still partly there considering as you can imagine even I saw the word "Minnesota" with a bit longer O sound and when she meets another person from that area of the country, it soooo comes back. So then I would've thought it'd at least sneak back on her a bit when she had to talk to her family *shrug* I can only go by what I know
