Buffy set him up and knocked him right back down. Poor Spike...
Buffy did no such thing, actually. To "set him up" she would have had to have been dishonest with him, which she wasn't. Riley was the villain here, the one who came in and forced Buffy into a corner. Should Spike be upset? Absolutely! But what choice did Buffy have here? Poor Spike and poor Buffy.

. . . and here comes the angst - oh I so hope that Buffy can grow a set and put Riley in his place. After all Spike has done for her it makes me sad that he feels pushed aside.
Just enough time between updates that I have a legitimate excuse to reread the entire thing before I read the new chapter. Wonderful story, just keeps getting better and better.

Don't for a minute think that this was something Buffy wanted -- the events of the night have spun out of control and she's just holding on at this point, trying to protect the one who needs it most -- her mother.
