So many S6 stories have Buffy, Dawn, Spike and Tara living together happily, where Tara and Spike are bestest buds. That never felt like a natural progression to me. Tara has natural allies in Dawn, and, sort of, Giles. Not so much the others. I really wanted to "properly" deal with where Tara and Anya go when they are no longer Scooby-WAGs. So, this.
Dawn trusts Spike, so is willing to take a lot on faith. I (as author) don't disagree with any of Giles' concerns. They are all things that can only *really* be addressed by faith. Just like whether or not Spike's actions in S5 are all about ego and his romantic ideals or genuine change for the better. Giles quite likes Spike, really, he just doesn't trust him. Remember, too, as readers we know what's been going on Spike's head since he discovered the chip didn't work. Giles hasn't: he only found out an hour ago. It would be wildly out of character for him to say, "Oh well, if Spike says it's only Buffy, that's all fine then."
