Very good question - so, what, all vamps are suddenly good now? Yes, some of them may have a conscience and know right from wrong, but many are still as hateful and cruel as they were for centuries, just unable to physically harm  a human. Velvet was a specially good example.

I had this sinking feeling Spike would use his freedom to go along with her into the serpent's nest. I've got a baaaaad feeling about this Waldo!

Good for Mara (clever naming...means bitter) telling it like it is. She was a rape victim, not a whore! I had some sympathy for Velvet except her cruelty towards Spike.

So Buffy sees that Spike did go through the center....not a surprise here, his behavior screamed of it.
