Love it.  Love the idea of Spike being protective, gallant and seriously tough all at the same time. I'm a plot-junkie at bottom, but I do like strong characterisation too.  That's why I think it works that Buffy says she has a Spike-shaped spot in her heart but that she can deal with it. The 'it doesn't hurt anymore' bit isn't true, but it doesn't threaten to kill you anymore.  Telling yourself that it no longer hurts is the palliative and reward.  After 5 years, this is really how it feels.  Doesn't take the grand romance away from the story, just prepares the ground for the feelings to send those shoots curling into life again.  

A great start.  I'm really hooked.  Please let it be full and satisfying but not a million chapters long?
