Chapter 9: Black Sabbath

"Black Sabbath"

"What is this that stands before me?
Figure in black which points at me
Turn around quick, and start to run
Find out I'm the chosen one
Oh no

Big black shape with eyes of fire
Telling people their desire
Satan's sitting there, he's smiling
Watches those flames get higher and higher
Oh no, no, please God help me

Is it the end, my friend?
Satan's coming 'round the bend
people running 'cause they're scared
The people better go and beware
No, no, please, no"
Black Sabbath (Black Sabbath 1970)

Rupert Giles was exhausted. Being head of the Council and helping to run the European resistance was taxing. It had been five years since he’d returned to England. Someone was needed to stop the Initiative from forcing their policies on other countries.

Surprisingly, if it hadn’t been for Wesley Wyndam Pryce the whole plan would have dissolved. More than one member of the Council thought the way the soldiers did. The only good demon is a dead demon and the more you can learn from the things before they died the better. It was this old way of thinking that repulsed Giles. While some demons deserved to be killed, not all were evil. To wipe out an entire species simply because they were not the “right one” was genocide. Giles believed that only those demons who possed a threat were the ones who needed to be earased. He knew that it was a departure from his old Council teachings but he'd finally seen the truth through the lies. Rupert Giles would have rather kissed a fungus demon than return to that way of thinking.

When Wesley entered, Giles immediately rose. He wasn’t scheduled for a meeting so there must have been an emergency. They had all been working over time since Buffy had gone missing. Seeing the look of dread on Wesley’s face, Giles feared the worst.

“We have a location.” Wesley said without greeting.

“Where?”

“A place referred to as the Citadel.” Wesley paused for a moment.

“It’s the old Initiative location in what used to be Sunnydale.”

Fred quickly wiped the tears from her eyes. The scientist were currently pulling another specimen from one of their donors. The very act of forcing any species to bare these experiments was appalling. Fred could still hear the poor thing screaming as they had cut her open. It had made Fred sick that she couldn't do anything to help the violated demons.

A soft sigh startled Fred. Turning quickly, she could just make out a dark shape laying on one of the beds. Walking over she could see a green eyed man covered in bruises. She remembered treating this one earlier. He had been injured when a group of rowdy soldiers had decided to play kick the demon. The Lt. General hadn’t liked it. This demon was useful for now. She firmly remembered him bellowing how it cost too much to retrain the things. Fred feared the day when this demon was no longer useful.

“Please do not feel guilty.” Jumping, Fred stared with wide eyes.

“Don’t be frightened. It’s just that your emotions are rather hard to ignore.” The kind look on his face nearly undid her. Tears welled in Fred’s brown eyes as she valiantly tried to will them away. Her heart hurt and her soul wept. Here this demon was trying to make her feel better when she was one of the scientist in charge of studying them. Fred couldn’t help how she felt, she had always hated to see anyone suffer.

“Let me help.” Fred whispered as she gently squeezed his hand.

“Please.”

William tossed and turned on his hard bed. He couldn’t get the image of the blond slayer from his mind. She was amazing. Her grace when fighting took his metaphorical breath away. William had killed two slayers in battle and he couldn’t help but dream of what a battle between him and the blonde would have been like. William liked to think it would have been a dance the likes he had never experienced before.

“Sorry luv. Don’t speak Chinese.” Spike stated from across the burning temple. Cannons could be heard in the distance. The cries of people fighting and dieing rose above the angry growl of the flames. The heat made Spike’s skin itch and the presence of the slayer made his demon roar. Tonight it was do or die. Tonight, Spike would finally have his dance.

“Come on luv. Let’s dance.” Spike smirked. The dark slayer glared at him with hatred burning in her eyes. Her body was tense while Spike bounced on the balls of his feet. His demon was screaming for her blood. Spike well remembered the last and only time he’d had slayer blood. The thought made his mouth water and his eyes to flash a brilliant gold. Raising his hands, Spike quirked a finger, inviting the slayer to begin the battle. Letting out a triumphant roar, Spike charged towards the rushing slayer and the battle began.

William could feel the joy coming from his demon. This slayer was different. She was stronger, faster, and more resourceful than the others that he’d faced. A wide grin split William’s face. Her moves were fluid and matched his own. He could hear her heart pounding in her chest and smelt her excitement in the air.

Blows where traded. Kicks were blocked. The power they each held was in their bodies was finally let loose. William had no idea how long their dance had lasted. Everything around them had disappeared. When the buzz sounded, signaling the end of their battle, both jumped back startled. Locking eyes briefly with the slayer, William made a snap distinction.

“Soon slayer.” William promised the girl silently. “Soon we’ll have our one good day.”

Buffy’s only response was a slight hardening of her eyes. She’d gotten his message and one day the soldiers would pay.

Lt. General Weston sat with a rather smug grin on his face. The first fieled test of their weapon had been a success. With some slight modifications, the next few test proved even more beneficial than they had imagined. Now all they needed to do was crush the offence in Europe. Thanks to the media the people seemed to be starting to think the way the soldiers did. There were a few bleeding hearts that were holding up their progress with the foreign governments but once they exposed the demons for the vicious animals that they were, then the other countries would simply follow their lead.

The ringing of the phone pulled Lt. General Weston from his thoughts.

“Lt. General Weston speaking.” Pausing, he listened to the voice on the other end of the phone.

“When is this event taking place?”

“Good.” Lt. General Weston smiled.

“Don’t worry. You will be handsomely rewarded for your assistance.”
