Just wanted to let you know I am enjoying this very much! I always thought I was the only one who rather fancied seeing Spike riding a mechieta. I haven't followed the recent books in the 'Foreigner' series but enjoyed the first three so much. Great to see a favourite writer playing in TWO of my favourite worlds.
Have you read Sheri Tepper's 'Grass' as well? You might like it! I crossed the mecheita with her Hippae.

Great description of balancing on a steed. Many rural people in the South have only one vehicle which means the rest of the family is dependent on using horses to get around. At least my family did.

I only learned to ride a couple of years ago when we moved into a rural area and I vividly remember how scary it was! And that back and forth that Buffy was put through when the h'laren got up came from my one experience with riding a camel. I too found myself staring at the sky!

Your Buffy and Spike are so true to form - I am loving how Buffy is so smart and capable, but still, she had her "duh" moment about the blood. You've gotten Spike's voice just right as well.
