Chapter 8: Serenity

"Serenity"

"As I sit here and slowly close my eyes
I take another deep breath
And feel the wind pass through my body
I'm the one in your soul
Reflecting inner light
Protect the ones who hold you
Cradling your inner child

I need serenity
In a place where I can hide
I need serenity
Nothing changes, days go by

Where do we go when we just don't know
And how do we relight the flame when it's cold
Why do we dream when our thoughts mean nothing
And when will we learn to control

Tragic visions slowly stole my life
Tore away everything
Cheating me out of my time
I'm the one who loves you
No matter wrong or right
And every day I hold you
I hold you with my inner child

I need serenity
In a place where I can hide
I need serenity
Nothing changes, days go by

Where do we go when we just don't know
And how do we relight the flame when it's cold
Why do we dream when our thoughts mean nothing
And when will we learn to control

Where do we go when we just don't know
And how do we relight the flame when it's cold
Why do we dream when our thoughts mean nothing
And when will we learn to control

I need serenity " Godsmack (Faceless 2003)

Leaf sorted through the Citadel’s laundry baskets. She despised this task with every fiber of her being. Unfortunately one of the soldiers had decided to be a dick and she was now stuck with piles of dirty laundry. Quietly she watched the new girl stiffly sort through the clothes. Leaf knew that she was a witch. She could feel the girl’s power the moment she was brought in four months ago. The aura of despair that clung to the poor girl broke the little sprite’s heart. Leaf wanted to reach out to her and let her know that she wasn’t alone but Melly had warned her not too.

“There is a time for everything and it is simply not time for the poor girl yet.”

Trey silently watch the scientist scuttle to and fro. He was in the medical wing under going a new round of testing. Once a month the doctors would poke, prod, and try to unlock his secrets. What the soldiers didn’t know was that Trey’s secrets would never be for the soldiers. They only looked at the world as something they could conquer and remake in their image.

Trey knew their plans. He could easily see the greed in their eyes. When the world finally revolted against it’s would be rulers, the soldiers house would sink into the ground. Nature would not allow them to continue. Trey could see the earth ridding itself of their castles, and nothing would remain once the storm had passed.

After the test were finished one of the soldiers escorted Trey back to his cell. When he left the room, Trey was whistling softly to himself.

“So, what do we have?” Angel asked, once the groups had been seated. Looking around the table at all the weary faces, Angel could see a look in their eyes that was undoubtedly present in his own. Too many friends were gone and even more innocent blood had been spilled. Some days Angel feared that he’d never be free of the scent.

“They are going after the Council.” Daniel calmly stated. He’d finally lifted his head from the table so that he could look the others in their eyes.

“What did you see?” One of the archivist asked.

“They have a weapon. It is silver in color and has a slight metalic scent to it. They are going after them within the month.”

"Did you see the attack on the Council?” Cordelia asked as she leafed through the packet of information that had been provided. Daniel simply nodded his head.

“We’ll have to phone Wesley.” Angel nodded, making a note to remind himself to place the call.

“Giles.” Cordelia chimed in. “Wesley’s busy setting up another safe house.”

“Fine. We’ll call Giles. Was their anything else? Daniel?” Angel asked. When all he received was a nod, Angel drew the meeting to a close.

“Well if that ain’t vague.” Ritchie, one of the other rebels present at the meeting, grumbled.

“Can it Ritchie.” Gavin Clark ordered. He was the one responsible for sector five and no one talked bad about Daniel. Gavin had been a first responder for the fire department before the soldiers came. Despite his human origin, Gavin wasn’t about to let someone suffer because of their genetic make up.

The soldiers were about to arrest him on charges of treason when Angel and his small group had cleared them out. In desperate need of someone with medical knowledge, Gavin had joined the fight. He had never looked back. That didn’t mean he liked following orders. Gavin ran his group similar to the way his old fire house had been run. His group could bicker amongst themselves but no outsider would ever be permitted to trash any of his people.

“When are we going to get these bastards?”

All head turned to the furious thirteen year old. Kelly had her small hands wrapped around the arms of her chair. Face tinged with red, Kelly couldn’t understand what all the talking was about. They knew what the bad guys were going to do, so why not go and stop them?

“Kelly, dear, it doesn’t work that way.” Placing a warm hand on her arm, Cordelia tried to sooth the distraught teen. She was surprised when Kelly jerked away from her. With a disgusted look in her normally warm brown eyes, Kelly turned her anger on the group seated before her.

“Why not?” Kelly asked. “Is it because you say so? Well screw that! We know what their going to do! We know when! We should go there and kill them! Take from them what they took from us.”

“No.” The word was barely whispered but everyone heard it. Everyone was now focused on Daniel. There was a fire present in his eyes that had been missing for four years.

“When we finally end this, it will be on our terms and done our way. Not theirs. Never theirs.”

Lt. General Weston was overseeing the exercise today. He had given thought to what that moron Johnson had spouted off and wanted to see this female for himself. As the girl and the vampire squared off against each other, it seemed like the whole room froze. All eyes were on the deadly duo as the wove an intoxicating dance around the room. It seemed as if they could read the other’s minds. The air felt charged and the hair on Lt. General Weston’s neck stood. He didn’t need to replicated the European Council’s method. He had it right there in his facility.

Neither Buffy or William noticed the feral gleams that entered their eyes when they locked gazes across the room. Their stances subtly shifted. The slightly petite pair seemed to grow larger. Their presence filled the room. The air around them seemingly pulsed with life. As their blood sang in their bodies, the primal forces that governed their natures called out to the other. No longer where they meeting as enemies, destined to destroy the other. For the fist time in history vampire and slayer met as allies in battle.
