I think the real problem is her good friends actually. He would be doing so much better is he had reason to feel that THEY gave a rats arse about his well being, cared about him as a person and trusted him at least a little! Hell Spike is having to learn to see that Buffy is different with him now (at least it is a positive change there).
A bit scary that his dream has real life parallel aspects....ooooo NOT good!
