Thank you for a lovely hero Riley. I always liked him as a character, just not for Buffy. I love how he supported Buffy and and gave her the courage to come out. then he ran much needed interference with the scoobs! I hope that Sam will treat him right and that Giles' presence in the timeline will help things not go so badly sideways... maybe in this universe, Tara lives.
I loved the character analysis in this story... you didn't make anyone extremely anything... very subtle, and believable.

Very nice story, and a much better send off than he ever got in the show. I think this Riley is much more real, in a way, certainly a far cry from the one dimensional blunder bore the show made of him.

Wow I really enjoyed this story :)
I think this is the first story I have ever read where I didn't hate Riley... I love how u made him nice and understanding and actually had him help fix some of the problems that took place in the BTVS plot line!!!
I will definitely be reading all of ur other stories cuz i know they will be just as good as this one if not better :)

Awww. What a great story! I always kind of liked Riley as person but I didn't like him with Buffy and I thought the turn his character took was a little off. I think you have redeemed him and actually made him a nice, smart guy from Iowa. I love how you made his presence just what was needed to make things alright with everybody. Great story! Thanks for writing.

wow, I enjoyed this story - even tho I usually just read NC-17 Spuffies. It was well-written, funny, and wove various plot lines together seamlessly. I almost think I'd like to read Riley-fic. But of course I have no time for anyone but Spike : )

I didn't think I would like such a Riley-centric story, but it was really good! I enjoyed it a lot. I loved the shifting POV and you did a great job weaving in canon.
Of course this Riley was totally off canon which is why I like him here. Great ending!

Very nice. Good for Buffy, figuring out that her discomfort over Sam was comparable to Riley's over Spike. Riley rising above is a good example for her to follow.

So Sam still fancies Riley and now he's not back with TheGirlOfHisDreams perhaps she has a second chance. I wonder what the real reason is for her arrival... Glad Buffy feels she can be open about her relationship with Spike around Riley, even if he doesn't feel altogether comfortable with it.

Oh, love how Sam came into the story even with Riley not being with her. Nice way to both stick to the events of season 6 and incorporate a bit of Riley's life outside of Sunnydale and the Scoobies. I loved that bit at the beginning about him being happy for Spike and Buffy. Again, I'm actually liking your Riley! Anyhow, wonderful chapter. I wonder if Riley will leave or Sam will stay and if something happens between them or if they'll seperate again. Looking forward to finding out!

Aw! Okay, I officially remove your Riley from the stock of my thrown out Rileys. I could seriously kiss him right now. The conversation they had was so good for Buffy. Riley's actually a really good friend, to Buffy and to Spike (which is still slightly weird). I wonder if they'll still get stuck in the house and if everything is as choatic. Okay, you did the unthinkable, you made me like Riley...lol! Honestly, I never really had much of a problem with him on the show, but rarely do I read a fiction that has me like him, so kudos to you. If Riley can accept them, then the others should be able to. I just hope Buffy won't keep it a secret for much longer, I already like how things are different from the show.

YAY guys! Love how you dealt with Giles in this way. On a side note....there were so many ways they could have worked around ASH leaving the show without making Giles an utter git like having him leave this way! So glad you had the boys talk sense into him.

O.K. This is so not Sunnydale-ish. Two males talking to each other sensibly? And not just any two , but guys in love with the same woman? well, good for you, taking a risk like this, It has been a good read.
I'm sorry for not reading and reviewing this before! Hectic life = little fanfic. Anyhow, this chapter was great! (I actually had to back to ch 24 to get reaquanted (I so spelled that wrong) with the storyline. I love how closely it runs to season 6 just with all the twists, but I couldn't remember what did and didn't happen! Hehe. Still, very much with the love!

Oh dear...that would have been good advice actually! I almost feel sorry for Riley being conflicted with still wanting Buffy yet realizing he will never have her that way again (and noting that Spike does actually love her and there is something there).
Good look at Riley's thought process and a glimpse of that scene between Spike and Buffy. Oh my....going to get interesting now!

Oh. My. Gosh. I love it! I so wanted to know what Spike and Buffy were whispering about, but now I just want to know what happened between them after the spell was lifted!!! But oh me gosh, that was fantastic. What a way to end the chapter. And again you make me feel sorry for Riley. That is such a foreign feeling for me! But I absolutely adored the chapter!!!

I very much like this version of Tabula Rasa. Great job. I'm actually feeling sorry for Riley at the end. I hope he's become the type of man who won't try and break them up. Unlike AYW which stunk to high heaven of him framing Spike.

Thanks for the two updates! I can't believe I'm saying this, poor Riley. Looking forward to seeing Buffy's POV on the matter.
Riley is a realist at least. His instincts have been telling him the lay of the land and now events have proven them. Buffy might not be ready to admit her feelings but Riley has seen them (and KNOWS Spike loves Buffy in truth).
Won't take them long to put two and two together and confront Willow. Buffy could have been killed! That is true in canon as well as this story.

OK. I thought that spell would only affect those in direct physical proximity to Willow but ,hey, this alternate reality is really breaking all sorts of bounds. Very creative of you.

You've written one perfect in character respectful to character story. I'll certainly rec it in the next Buffyversetop5 round by the end of 2009. I think you need to post it on LJ, make more fans aware of it.
Seriously, after reading too much Riley-bashing Spuffy, I applaud to your amazing story that treats characters with respect and doesn't go down the line of cheap character bashing.

Oh great way to compare the pros and cons and get a look at her emotional instability at the moment. I think if she had said these things to Spike, even in canon, he would have accepted and not pushed. Riley, even in canon had he been there, would have wanted to "take care of her" and would have smothered her.
No first kiss yet LOL. Makes perfect sense with the changes you've made. Very nice alterations with the core of canon in place.

Nope, not playing kissyface yet ;-) Putting Riley in the mix though confuses things (at least for poor ole Buffy, who thinks too much) - plus there's the emotional instability you mention. I immediately fell in love with this chapter when I read the title. Then I read the actual content. First of all, Buffy POV, and wow, what it does! It's amazing to have the Buffy view on all this emotional turmoil after so much of Riley's feelings being the only thing we are open to. You did a fantastic job portraying her pain and the inner conflict she is fighting. Truly beautiful chapter that could almost stand alone. Well, except for the fact that it's needed to advance the plot and all. =D
I'm glad to hear even the title won you over ;-) It was definitely time to see what was going on from Buffy's POV, and this seemed the perfect place to put it. She was so all over the place in OMWF and that couldn't have been captured as well from Riley's POV. Anyway, thanks for reading and I'm glad you liked it so much!

Oh oh jealous Riley may not be a good thing even WITH his alteration in attitude toward Spike. All that good will might not extend to Spike and Buffy pairing up.
That was always a problem...humans fighting demons are eventually going to be killed. Buffy needs an equal as a slaying (and other) partner and no one seems to get that.

Man, I almost felt sorry for Riley in this chapter. Almost. But it was a good chapter that really showed how much Buffy and Riley's relationship has changed and that she's actually okay with it but he's rather... unsure? not? Leaning towards not. I wonder if the fragile friendship (is friendship too strong of a word?) he has with Spike will be completely shattered over his jealous of the time Buffy is spending with him. And again, Riley doesn't like being recused... That hasn't changed. Love the chapter.

I always loved that drinking scene. One of the few times Buffy treated Spike with any kind of affection or respect 'cos she was too tiddly to remember she was supposed to hate him. I'm so glad she chose to take Spike in tow and totally blew Riley off.

Another great chapter! Love the Spike/Buffy interaction from Riley's POV and how he interprets it. I loved the part when Riley was remarking that he had never seen Spike smile like that... awwwwwww. And it was funny to see Buffy's reaction to Riley and Spike being drinking buddies... she's right. So is Riley though. Lot has changed! Anyhow, loved it!
I'm hoping Riley doesn't make a move on Buffy, but I suppose he has hopes. It'll be interesting to see how well that goes down!

okay, so, i'm starting to worry here. all we really see is riley's interaction with buffy, but no spike, it looks to me like this isn't going to turn out being spuffy, but since it's on this site, i hope i wouldn't have to worry about that. i may like this riley a bit better than usual, but i still don't want them together. i'm still worried about the buffy/other and even though we didn't see it, i like that she still confided to spike about being in heaven, that gives me some hope.
No need to worry, I promise! I wouldn't do that to you :-) It's just a matter of finding convenient Spike/Buffy interaction to insert Riley into. The next chapter should make you feel a bit better, I hope. Thanks for reading!
Such a nice interlude from Riley's viewpoint. Giles's is so much more insightful.
I love Giles in this chapter - excellent advance into the next phase of her resurrection - very sensitive treatment of her stress and how Giles is trying to understand her emotional state and helping her with all the economic worries.
Happy to see Giles back - glad he's there to help. Thanks for another update so quickly.
Oh, yay, Giles! I don't know, maybe it's because I'm overly emotional due to all the stress of finals, but this was actually very sad. I liked seeing things through Giles' eyes -- one we kind of had during the season, but not truly like this. Poor Buffy. Great chapter.

I'm glad 'your' Giles seems to a bit more sympathetic to Buffy's situation. I couldn't understand the way Giles completely ignored Buffy's desperation and apart from giving her a cheque he did absolutely nothing to help, then he criticised the way she was coping and left her to sink. I know it was because ASH had other committments and it was all part of the 'tough growing up' theme of the season, but it was totally OOC for him, as everything that came after continued to be.
I seem to have gone off on a rant. Sorry. Loved the chapter.

Like the handling of Riley's struggle for understanding and some bedrock reality. An omniscient narrator wouldn't feel right. I love his growing empathy for Spike.
Oh, I love this story! The Riley perspective really does wonders. This was a great chapter! I love how Spike gets emotional after Buffy tells him she was in heaven. I like how we get to see additional scenes through Riley.
And someone needs to give both Spike and Buffy a hug! They can give each other hugs. It can be a hug fest! Man, during all the pain of season six, why did they never hug??? I never got that... It would have made such cool stuff for pics...

Yep, stole the end of Afterlife. :-) I think the writers used Riley for a certain role (the normal boyfriend who turns bad and leaves) and we never got to see much of him. I mean, with all that Psych he must have had some sort of better understanding. Glad you're liking him though - I like my Riley too :-)

I like this Riley. Sometimes I enjoy a bit of bashing but there's always a prim little voice inside saying, 'Now is this quite fair?' This Riley has matured, has compassion and even, it appears, a little bit of wisdom. There is more than enough room for more good guys in the world.
I like this Riley too! :-) He's not so bad really - bad for Buffy, but not bad for the world. Glad you're enjoying this.

This is a really neat treatment for all the prespell action between these four characters. it's nice to have that missing time explored in a fiction work and see what might have taken place between them. Adding Riley in the mix is an added point of interest -

I find myself feeling unaccountably sorry for Riley, and that's something I never thought would happen. Does he tell or does he not? Of course the weak excuses for not telling the others ring true. Can't tell Giles, Dawn or Spike because they'd get too invested in case something goes wrong, but of course nothing is going to go wrong... Yeah... right. They just know nobody would approve. Tara sounds doubtful. Good for her. I was always astonished that she'd agree to bring Buffy back after the way she acted when Joyce died and Dawn wanted to bring her back.

Got a feeling Willow might just go looking for some Leathes Bramble about now. I think Xander was the one to push for including Riley. Glad he is appalled by what he heard (and HE even brought up Spike as one who deserves the heads up). I like this Riley and I really have trouble with that character.

Comradery is about the best word for it. Not quite friendship, but something more than before. I agree with you - Riley seemed to have more of an idea than anyone else when it came to Spike's feelings. I am actually liking the tentative bits of comradery between Spike and Riley (and I CANNOT believe I just said that!). They do have much in common at this point in history and it sort of picks up the flavor of the conversation after Riley staked him before leaving....that awkward sameness of loving a girl that was closed down in one way or another to them.
Nice segment here. Even to the Bot's inane comments and Riley easing Spike's discomfort to a degree. Love that Riley noticed that Spike had been crying at Buffy's grave and is attributing real feelings to the vampire.

I absolutely love this chapter becuae it gives insight to why Riley was acting the way he is. I really liked that you had Riley be the one to give Spike the wake up call just for the fact that it seems somewhat right to have a person that did ont have to deal with the pain all summer to do it, and it would be something Riley would have done.
Yay! That was my cunning plan. :-) I wanted to show both sides - Dawn's POV and Riley's own. He's not so bad after all - as someone said, he always had good intentions.
Well you succeeded! This time Riley actually SAW the man, the grieving man (and interesting how he accepts Spikes emotions as real as opposed to Giles and company!) and seems to have empathy. This is a much nicer Riley than the one I saw on screen. Well done!

Yay for me! :-) I think it's easier to accept the emotions when they're so raw. Giles and co didn't believe Spike's love was real but I'm sure even they couldn't doubt his grief. I'm glad you like Riley!

God what a jackass! Dawn is right...they should all realize Riley might have helped to prevent Buffy dying and not treat him like the returned hero.
Hope Spike has to save all their asses and they have to realize what he has done.

Well, I think she did like Riley before - but then he left and she decided to hate him. She's pretty quick to switch loyalties, as we well know with her treatment of Spike in S7.
As for treating Riley like their hero... well, they need someone to follow, don't they? The Scoobies always seem a bit lost without a leader. But, yes, he shouldn't be hailed because, after all, he left when he could have stayed and helped.

ugh, okay, riley's pissing me off, too. he seemed somewhat decent in the last chapter, but now he's got a lot of nerve to think that he can control everything and everyone. basically, he left, he has no say in what dawn or anyone else does. now i'm worried that when buffy comes back, she'll treat him just like everyone else and ignore spike. i really hope that's not the case, i want him to leave. he doesn't belong there anymore. i'm still worried about the buffy/other, if it's not riley, i'm not sure who else it could be, but i'm really hoping that buffy won't treat him like she did on the show.
Before you go hating Riley forever, please remember that this chapter was from the point of view of a rather upset 14-year-old with a grudge :-) I hope the next chapter will make Riley seem a bit better because I'm afraid he won't be leaving - or this story would be over far too soon!
As regards the Buffy/Other - it does refer to Buffy and Riley, but that doesn't mean they will actually be together. I guess I just wanted a warning to be safe :-) Thanks for reading!

...clearly I was not referring to they as a couple, if not as part of a family. Their interaction and, of course, the deep of their feelings confirms it. Buffy died for Dawn and Spike would do the same for her. The loss of their closeness in the sixth season seemed to me that it was very unfortunate and I hope that it does not happen here as well.

xander had the right of it. Riley wasn't there so he can't possibly understand how such a tragedy changed everything and brought them all together. As for not being a part of it any more? Well... he never really was, was he?
Well, he was more of a part of the group than Spike... But yeah, now things are different. And not just because Buffy's gone - but because he's been gone too. It's going to be hard for him to be right back in again.

It's official: I now like Riley. Well, in this fic anyway. I still hate the guy on the show, lol. One thing that I really loved was that he feels guilty for leaving and wonders if he could've prevented Buffy's death. It's like what Spike's going through, but not as intense and that's kinda where you can see their differences.
I'm a bit anxious to see if the Scoobies tell him about Dawn's Keyness and the origins of the Buffybot and what his reactions will be. That'll be fun to read if you do it.

Whew - angst city. Love it
A great idea for a story. I always wondered how Riley would have reacted if he really understood what Buffy was dealing with while he was gone, and if he'd known she'd died. Your portrayal of his character is realistic and true to who he is (which I know can be hard on a Spuffy site) but makes the perfect comparison to Spike's thoughts and feelings. Spike's situation is also very realistic and not romanticized, but still touching and deep and I feel so much empathy for the vamp, though I hope he gets a glimpse of Dawn giving Riley some lip and then clearly preferring him!

Wow, is the first thing that comes to mind. While the last chapter broke my heart, but this one shattered it.
He choked out her name and grabbed at his chest, wondering if a heart that didn’t beat could still stop working.
That was when I started sobbing. The repetition of "She was gone" got me teary-eyed, but that line was what broke the dam. This was just lovely and so well written. I know the next chapter will be just as wonderful!

Aww, I feel like giving him a hug. Have to say, much rather read from Spike's perspective and I don't believe he's right about everyone being happy that Riley is back. Well, I doubt Dawn would be. Spike forgets that he is the one that just left without saying goodbye to anyone, there would be some hostility.
He definitely needs one! This was something that just had to come from Spike's POV, I felt. Riley just wouldn't be able to show that much pain and, well, anguish.

No one like Spike for a lil breakhearting moment. It´s so painful to see him like this...and only hundred days passed. Poor guy...poor vampire.

That was amazing. I love that Spike's the one to tell Riley. Seeing Spike in mourning over Buffy always breaks my heart and you wrote him beautifully. But even better is that I'm starting to sympathize with Riley in this story. I can't wait to see his reaction in the next chapter!

Oh no - poor Buffybot. Spike doesn't love her anymore. Very sad and wonderful chapter. Riley's no problem as a character. As long as he doesn't get Buffy at the end. :)

I am looking forward to the next chapter. I really like this idea, and the way you are approaching it. Not usually a Riley fan, but seeing things through his eyes is going to be very interesting. Also interested to see this summer explored. Spike's position in the group was mentioned ,but then no one ever really talked about it agan after the first few eps of S6. Hope you update soon, as I am dying to see were you go with this !

OMG! I love this! Having Riley return while Buffy's dead and then resurrected has always been one of my many S6 What If scenarios that I've never had the talent to write. And as much as I hate Riley and constantly wish he never existed, the way you've written him is really tolerable! For once I don't wanna punch him in the face! And that's saying a lot, trust me :) This looks like it's gonna be really good and I can't wait for more!!!
I hope my talent is enough to satisfy your 'what if 'curiosity! Glad to hear you don't completely hate Riley. He deserves some pity at least... More soon.

Ah, you seem to have hit on my fic kink with this one - third person POV. I love reading stories where a relationship is observed by someone on the sidelines. Can't wait to read more.

Of course he assumes Spike put a spell on her, doesn't even realize that's not Buffy. Then again, he didn't exactly know that wasn't her during the body switch, either. And this is the woman he claims to love? Have to say, Riley has a lot of nerve just coming back like that and expecting her to forgive him, he doesn't even think about the fact that she could have moved on. I'm interested to see where you go with this, but I'm gonna hold you to the no Biley.
I will allow you to beat me with a stick if there is any whiff of Biley. Riley may still be in love with her, but that doesn't mean Buffy's going to be running back to him! :-)

I'm very glad the presence of Riley hasn't put you off! Woo hoo, one reader! :-) I thought it would be fun to throw him in and have him see a different Spike, a robot Buffy, a reincarnated Buffy etc. A different POV than usual at least. Hope you enjoy.
