A continuation of my story, "Nightmare." Can Buffy and Spike, who've now been mated for fifty years, save their daughters from Angelus' clutches? ~Author's note: Italics refers to internal monologue or to when Buffy and Spike speak to each other telepathically.

Timeline: Sometime post episode three, season seven - taking nothing else into account.

Having no idea how it happened, Spike finds himself back in 1977, reeling from a newly acquired soul and more guilt than most could handle. After dodging Drusilla, his main focus is getting back to his own time and back to Buffy in Sunnydale so that he can atone for all he's done. That is, until he sees the newly born slayer in 1981 and goes off in a new direction. Can he stop the events that brought misery to Buffy's life, or will he be forced to watch destiny destroy the woman he loves all over again? Buffy returns to California for the first time in years, and encounters more of her past than she ever expected.

Spike. Ensouled. Stuck in a basement. Alone. Scared. Mad. Tortured by guilt. “I don't have anywhere else to go.” Buffy already knows, that can't be true.

A cataclysmic event sends shock-waves through the fabric of reality, creating ripples that may well destroy the world a century before Buffy Summers is born. Perhaps it is not unreasonable, then, for the Watchers Council to summon this unorthodox Slayer who has already faced and triumphed over three apocalyses back in time to quell a threat both new and ancient. Unfortunately, their spell also entangles Spike in the midst of his tropical reconciliation with Drusilla and pulls him along for the trip. Worse yet, one of the few beings in existence with both knowledge of Buffy's every weakness and the motivation to use it hitches a ride. And she, at least, knows that all magic has a price...

A/N: I don't usually give warnings, and the story won't contain obviously disturbing content like rape or extreme and graphic torture, but boy do I mean the rating on this one. (Yes, I know, vague. I'm putting on my flame-retardant suit right now. :) ) Oh, and I should perhaps add that this story contains spoilers for the post-series comics, up to and including Season 9.

I loathe the episode As you Were in Season Six. So this is my rewrite of the ending, trying to make sure Riley Finn’s behaviour is seen in a different light.

Following the events of "As You Were," Buffy has revelations about her relationship with Spike. Having some of his own, Spike decides to leave town and make a change. Can Buffy get to him in time and confess her feelings or will the forces against her make her too late?
