The rest of Spike and Buffy’s first night together. Takes place between chapters 17 and 18. Smut with a helping of plot. (If you haven’t read Sideways, this will still mostly make sense. Just know vampire Spike and human Buffy.)

Alternate reality. Buffy starts as a normal college girl. But her life is slowly turned upside down beginning with the day she’s unexpectedly in danger. Hired by chance to protect her is Spike, a vampire with a reputation for doing business with anyone for enough money. She’s less than thrilled, but finds herself drawn to him even as she realizes he’s more than he seems. But humans aren’t the only ones after her, and when she’s called as the Slayer, her whole world changes. Things with Spike, who she’s discovered some realities about, are no longer as simple as they seemed. But being sent to the Hellmouth and realizing the high death rate of her calling, Buffy hires Spike as backup with the only thing she has left—Slayer blood. Winner of 20 awards!

After the events of The Heart of Her, Buffy is conflicted. Unsure of who she is or what she needs, Spike sets out to help her find the answers. This fic can be read as a stand-alone, but it helps to have read the previous story.

It's the night of Joyce's funeral and Buffy finds help in the most unlikely place possible.

Vampires are supposed to dust, not leave an unnaturally still, empty shell behind after stepping in front of their mortal enemy to save their lives during an attack. A confusing funeral later and Buffy has to come to terms with having lost a lover she would never have called a lover or told her friends about, and the one person who made living bearable after being ripped out of heaven. Life crushes her even harder and she struggles to exist at all. Her only moments of escape are dreams that make it impossible to believe that Spike is truly gone.

Life, freedom, feelings. There was no place for them here. This was hell, and she its most valued possession. Buffy's life takes an unexpected turn after being kidnapped, and as the line between sanity and madness starts to blur, the opportunity of freedom will present itself. Will she find enough will to live to take it, or will she take the easy way out and give in to the pain consuming her soul? And what does one ruthless vampire thirsty for her life have to to do with all this?

Set one year post-Chosen and immediately following Not Fade Away. Spike, fighting for his unlife in the alley, suddenly finds himself engulfed in flames for the second time. He appears at Buffy’s place in Rome, where she and Angel are kissing, and assumes he must have died and been sent to hell. Just what are the Powers playing at?
